AICN Posts a new version of the trailer!

Nice. But I don't think that cut would've worked with general audiences in the theater.

Why not? It's almost the same as the first cut, and the inclusion of Nimoy made it even more interesting to the general audience.

For one Bana's 'The wait is over' feels completely out of place - it doesn't fit at all - and second, the general audience doesn't care about Leonard Nimoy.

Only if you saw the first cut first. And do you really think the average moviegoer cares about little stuff like this, like "oh, this line feels out of place so I'm not going to see this movie"?

and second, the general audience doesn't care about Leonard Nimoy.

You are out of your mind! Maybe you should go outside and see some general audience every now and then?

Someone else asked me this upthread. In short, because Nimoy's presence could send the wrong message to Joe Moviegoer. So, is this a new Star Trek? Or just Star Trek XI? Don't get me wrong, Nimoy's presence for fans is great. It was cool to see that short clip. A great valentine. But until there's even more publicity coming out about this movie, his inclusion in the trailer my smack of "oh, it's just the same old thing in a new package." I don't think that's what they want to convey.
I think they want to sell the movie as pumping new life, new blood, and new action into the franchise. How do you do that and end the trailer with a sentimental line so earnestly delivered from a septigenarian who represents the past? ;)
Also, is Leonard Nimoy really that much of a box office draw to general audiences that his presence would make things more interesting? If the trailer didn't hook Joe by that point, Nimoy wasn't going to do it.

Yes, I think he is. I know lots of non fans who thought that this remake was a lame idea, and only when I told them that Nimoy was going to reprise his role as Spock they became slightly interested in this movie.

Star Trek is not as old fashioned to the general audience as most of you think it is!

It's a judgement call. I would definitely say that Trek went stale, even to fans like me. Also, your point about "old fashioned" is well taken. But being "not as old fashioned" is not necessarily a good thing. This movie is marketing itself as anything but old fashioned, even a little bit.
And while Nimoy's presence probably does legitimate the project in the eyes of some fans, I really doubt that he has the same effect on people generally. As I said above, if the trailer didn't peak the interest of the average movie goer without Nimoy, I'd find it very unlikely it would have with him. Of course, it made us fans drool.

Notice that every tidbit so far has left people hungering for more:

The first trailer showed no regular cast.

The first official crew shot had Kirk minus his uniform gold shirt, and was missing Spock. There was a still of young Spock, but not a posed full cast shot.

The first still of the Enterprise made people ask, "But how does it look when it's moving?"

The full trailer lacked Old Spock. And yet the fans wanted more...

JJ and the marketing people know exactly what they're doing.
