Spoilers AHSOKA series [Spoiler Discussion]

Reverend said:
I've found the simplest way to reconcile most of what the ST did poorly is to just presume that thing on Exogol was a deranged clone infused with the dark magiks and a memory implant from the Sith Throne itself. Just another one of many ways the Sith claw in futility at oblivion. The individual that was Palpatine was annihilated at Endor along with his physical form over Endor.
"The galaxy rejoiced when he died at the Battle of Endor, but Sidious had cheated death and patiently plotted a return to power." - OS
This solution has the duel benefits of not having to actually change anything, and it makes sense of all the contradictions, inconsistencies, convoluted plots and half-baked plans by simply attributing them to a fractured, diseased mind.
The saga is rife with poor decisions by characters, such as the rebels not changing ships in ANH, and we don't normally stoop to this level in order to accept them.

I'm glad the Ezra reveal wasn't drawn out into another episode. Great to finally see him realized in live action.

Baylen's comment about the enemy of my enemy is my friend, I think, will come full circle when Thrawn's troops are sent in to take care of business and wipe them all out.

The question is if Baylan's cycle is the return of Palpatine, or if he's sensing Snoke. Snoke's was said to be ancient (before he was just cloned puppets for Sheev), so maybe there was an original, and Thrawn/Baylan bring him back, only for Palpatine to subvert Snoke into puppet of the First Order?

Another fantastic episode, well paced and a welcome shift in tone and perspective. Something about it all felt like a cross between 'Willow' and 'The Dark Crystal'. I also like how well thought out this world is. Star Wars doesn't often go too deep into local cultures besides Tatooine.
Random thoughts: -
  • I presume I'm not the only one that actually wanted to hear "The History of the Galaxy Part One"? Not cool Dave. Gimme lore!
No, I cringed when I heard this, wondering if it was going to turn the whole episode into some weird lore flashback, or find another way to make the pacing even more glacial than it has been.

I like how the hyperspace effect looks different at this speed. Really conveys the insane amount of distance they're travelling.

I thought this was interesting as well. At first I wondered whether the effect had to do with the fact that it was biologically driven rather than technological, but then we saw the same thing from Morgan's ringship. The much faster velocity makes sense for the more streamlined effect- that and the lack of mass shadows between galaxies.

So I'm interpreting this to mean that Baylan was at the temple when it fell. I'm glad they didn't inflict yet another Order 66 flashback on us (yet), but I'm still naturally curious as to how he survived.

I'm mildly curious, but it's beginning to look more and more like Anakin really flubbed the massacre, so many of them got away.

At first I though his underlying helmet design was modified from an established variant (sans the gold mask & kintsugi touches, obviously), but it appears to be entirely custom. Looks like they fused a standard trooper helm with elements reminiscent of a shore/range/tank trooper's.

I hated this helmet. My first thought: "This can't be right. I saw Modred run through by Excalibur at the end of Excalibur."

"Bokken Jedi"? Curious term that feels like a pejorative; comparing Jedi not temple trained to wooden swords. I guess that term also applies to Ventress, Luke, and Rey too.

I thought he said 'Broken Jedi' or something like that. I need to go back and listen again.

The more time we spend with Baylan and Shin, the less it feels like they use the dark side. Dangerously close to it for sure, but they're not driven by pure passion and there's genuine camaraderie and respect there. Something true dark siders would not be capable of.

Agree. Baylan is an interesting character- he doesn't come off as evil at all, merely the hero of his own story. His apprentice is clearly having second thoughts about a lot of what she's seeing. It won't surprise me if both wind up on the side of the good guys before this is all over.

As much as tRoS is my least favourite Star Wars movie of all time: no. Even if it were remotely possible (it's not), I'd rather just work with what we have than try and wind back the clock.

Even then, you don't get to have that version of Mara Jade unless you fundamentally alter Luke's character and the notion of what a Jedi even is. So: still no.

I'm all for a canon reset with regards to the ST- it was just a hot mess and there's no away around that. I understand it isn't going to happen, but I sure miss the Legends EU as the 'real' story.

Thankfully Dave Filloni actually has an imagination, so we're mercifully spared a reprise of the Vong.

I hated the whole Vong series with a passion, even though I forced myself to read all of them. What came after was fairly lame as well, for the most part, IMHO. The best of the Legends EU was pre-Vong.

I was hoping for something a little more exciting from the new galaxy in terms of planets- not just another barren, moss-covered rock that looks like it was procedurally generated by a video game. Of course, I wouldn't expect the home of Dathomiri witches to be a garden spot, either. Whaddyagonnado? The little turtle guys I found to be just annoying, especially with the Hobbit clothes under their shells.

For all the buildup to finding Ezra, that entire scene was just flat, dull, and emotionless. Was this the reunion Rebels fans have been looking forward to for the past couple of years? Talk about anti-climactic! There's also the question of how Ezra got away from Thrawn in the first place, although he sure managed it enough times during the Rebels series.

Those coffin shape containers being wheeled aboard the ISD serve a purpose, methinks. Methinks the purpose is for our heroes to hide in a few of them so they can hitch a ride with Thrawn back to the galaxy far, far away where Star Wars lives. If the whales are making a one-way trip to die, we know Ahsoka's ship can't make it back on its own without some serious plot-contrivance. Hiding in those containers would be about the most "Rebels" solution ever, right?

Looking forward to seeing the wrap-up of the next two episodes, but at this point it is patently obvious that this series has no story of its own to tell- it's the bridge for more Filoni-verse stuff in the works. Or maybe not if additional seasons are in the works, but we've heard nothing on that yet AFAIK. I'm okay with that on a certain level, but a show should be a complete story unto itself as well. For example, nobody would call ESB 'filler.' even though it wasn't telling the whole story. This series just doesn't have that self-contained feel for me, and it's been entirely too slow and fan-wanky for my taste. Given it's lack of viewership (according to the internets), I hope it doesn't get the axe.

I'm really on the fence with this show. Love/Hate the whole way.

ANH gives a clue to that: "Helped the Empire hunt down..." doesn't imply one time slaughter but ongoing efforts with the Jedi "all but extinct."

It's not like it stopped existing...I don't get this.

Damn. That's the most duel minded presentation of ideas in post I've seen in a while. "I don't like this show. I hope it sticks around!"

*cues Data*. "Yes, I hate this."
"More?"
"Please."

Just in case anyone was wondering, the hieroglyphs on the tower appear to be another new alphabet, distinct from both the Dathmiri script we've been seeing until now, and the two similar-ish such that have recently shown up in Bad Batch & Jedi Fallen order.

The one over the gate however, is very familiar indeed.
Where did you find the name Noti? I played close attention to Ezra's dialogue to learn their name and heard nothing.
Subtitles for the hearing impaired often contains details like this. Also where I got "Night Troopers" from. ;)
Side note: they also indicated that the bandits were speaking "Noti langauge"
I'm guessing the 'night troopers' are undead using the 'magik' of the Nightsisters. Wouldn't shock me if there's actually very few 'living' people among Thrawn's contingent.
Yeah, that did occur to me, and like I said; notice the total absence of non-troopers among Thrawn's crew.
Between the kintsugi and the red bandages, the Great Mothers have clearly been repairing the troopers just as much as they've been repairing the ship. Whether that just means repairs like Maul's new legs, enhancements like what was done to Savage, or straight up zombies remains to be see.
Though if they are, then Marrock may have served more of a purpose after all; as set-up for this concept.

Either way, it still begs the question: who the hell have they been fighting to get so torn up over time?
For those of you who watched Rebels, is the damage to Thrawn's SD the same as what might have happened to it in Rebels?
In general scale, yeah. In specific detail . . . well see for yourself.

As you can see the damage seems inconsistent between shots, and there's a notable absence of tentacles grabbing the bridge section as one might expect. This is why I said a few weeks back that it's a little ambiguous as to whether is was just the Chimaera that got taken away, or all three of the destroyers that were parked over Lothal City.
Either way I don't think we saw any of them take a hit in the engines, so much of this could have happened later.

It hasn't stopped existing, but it's been relegated to the canon trash bin, and all new material will be tied to the ST, not 'the good stuff', so to speak. Leaving the door open for endless desconstructions, retcons, and so on. Thrawn's appearance himself in Rebels is a classic example, as well as Wedge's revised backstory as an Imperial defector.

I mean...the Rebels fans I know liked it.

This is what I mean by 'On the fence.' I don't want to the show to be cancelled, I want it to pick up the pacing, tighten up the plotline, and do better than it has so far. I shouldn't be falling asleep in my chair when watching a SW show- it's happened a couple times with Ahsoka.

The whales cannot all go there to die.
We know the Dathomirians hitched a ride way back to the Other galaxy at some point.
And it makes sense that the migration cycle of the whales has the entire group moving back and forth periodically.
With the old ones dying at this place and birthing grounds very likely at the planet we started this journey at, hence so many smaller younger whales among them.
What they do in between is anyone’s guess.

was anyone else thinking “they’ve gone plaid!” When they hurled to the new galaxy at ludicrous speed with all new effects?

It's been several years, and judging by the look of the ship and the troops, Thrawn's force hasn't had an easy time of it in this new galaxy. They positively look rode hard and put up wet.

Why are Force sensitive characters like Skoll, Hati and the Sisters of Dathomiri willing to follow the command of Thrawn, who is not Force sensitive?

My favorite episode so far! This was excellent! I'm glad everything I was afraid of happening didn't happen and that I was completely wrong about where this episode would go. Seeing Anakin was great, but this feels like the episode I've been waiting for all season!

- After the recap spent a lot of time with Hera and talking about the Senate, I was scared that the episode would be about them. Then after the cold open, I was prepared to get mad that none of the episode would have to do with Ahsoka. I wasn't expecting the whole episode to be about Sabine, Thrawn, and Ezra. Nothing to be mad about at all!
- Baylan describing Ezra as 'trained in the wild' was very cool.
- Blue Elon took a sec to get use too, but afterwards felt very, very Thrawn
- I'm thinking Thrawn had the Night Sisters kill pretty much all his crew once they settled on a long term plan and then turned them into cloud zombies, purely for logistical reasons.
- The crab people were SO CUTE. Especially their adorable little outfits
- When Thrawn says he will give Sabine a mount, I was thinking like a small personal craft. VERY amused to find he meant like an actual animal mount
- The dog characteristics of the mount were perfect. Acted just like my roommate's husky down to the weird way he drinks water. I have said numerous times to him to, 'stop embarrassing yourself,' when on walks.
- Ezra's mannerisms felt very Ezra. I hope he shaves off that beard. I was either lost in his very blue eyes or they are too distracting, haven't decided
- Looking forward to seeing how he reacts to Sabine pulling a total Ezra to get herself there

“Bokken Jedi,” per the closed captions.

Interesting. I guess the word is probably unfamiliar enough to most people that they won't know it as its literal Japanese translation as a wooden practice sword. "Wild Jedi", "Rim Jedi", or something like that may have made more sense in this case.

A very good question. In Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy, he had to sort of trick / browbeat a crazy clone Jedi to his cause (to be used for battle meditation), and he had to use Ysalamiri to literally shield himself from the Force being used against him. This plot point in Ahsoka is a real mystery so far- what common cause does he have with Dathomiri witches and rogue Force users?

Of course, we've already seen that Thrawn and Baylan are on very different quests, and Thrawn has already stated that Baylan's fate is irrelevant to him.

I don't understand.

I still have books to read and value some of them over the newer stuff. It's not in the trash if I can still read it.

Sorry if this sounds pedantic but this is a part of fandom that I never get. Things continue on and I value them so therefore they continue to exist. Even if newer material never acknowledges it that doesn't stop my enjoyment of it. Hell, my favorite Star Trek novel is a follow up to "All our Yesterdays" and it's never acknowledged. I still read it once a year.
Not this one.
I mean, OK. The question was more broad so I didn't think you were including yourself in this statement. Again, confusing.

You shouldn't?

I mean, I did with Clone Wars several times, especially the movie.

I guess I don't have the high standards like you when it comes to what Star Wars must do. If this show was cancelled then I would be OK with what we got.

I know, I'm confusing. :alienblush:
