Agents of SHIELD: Season 6

I actually really like the amnesiac Skrull idea and it fits in nicely with how the series finds ways to tie-in with the movies indirectly.

AoS returns after ENDGAME, right? Maybe whoever brings back everyone (if they do) accidentally includes Coulson in that snap.

That's been proposed, but unless they're flat out lying about Gregg's role in season 6, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Yeah, unless Clark Gregg's lying, which I doubt, it sounds like whoever he is, it's not the Coulson we've been following over the past five seasons. I think you could still find a bit of wiggle room to make it a new version of Coulson with a different name, but it does sound like our Coulson is definitely dead and they won't be undoing it.

So far as we know Phil was an only child, recruited for SHIELD right out of high school by Fury, went to the Communications Academy and became a field agent. No real mysteries hinted at so far as I can recall.

Lola is a SHIELD antique (probably owned by Peggy, Howard or Fury originally) that happens to be the same model as a car he and his father rebuilt together when he was a kid. Or was it the same car? I forget.

I suppose they could pull something out of thin air like his "high school teacher" father was a SHIELD agent from way back and happens to look suspiciously like old school pre-Sam Jackson Nick Fury from the comics...but it seems a bit late to pull that one out of the hat.

TVLine.com reveals when season 6 takes place:

Season 6, premiering sometime this summer, picks up about a year after the team dropped a terminal Coulson off in Tahiti

That seems like a pretty reasonable time jump, it's about what I was expecting.

Yeah like Marion Cotilard wasn't going to play Talia al Ghul and Benedict Cumberbatch, Khan Noonien Singh ;).

Of course there's always the possibility he's lying, but so far we haven't seen him or anyone else involved with AoS or any of the Marvel productions lie, so I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Gregg specifically said he didn't want to come back if it was just a case of "oh don't worry, he's all better now!" Which kinda precludes most possibilities that stem from this actually just being Coulson.

While they can certainly be coy and use misdirection at times, Marvel have never flat-out lied to protect a twist and I can't see that changing anytime soon.

And I just can't really see Clark Gregg flat out lying to his fans, from what I've seen of him he just doesn't seem like the type to do that.

Whereas I can't see the writers doing something as creatively lazy as just giving Coulson another resurrection. A lot of the show has been about Coulson dealing with the consequences of his first resurrection, and they finally brought his story to a close in a meaningful way. I can get them not wanting to lose the actor, but bringing the character back from the dead a second time would be a cheat.

It sounds more like Gregg will be playing a very different character; even if it is something like an alternate-reality version of Phil Coulson, he'll still have a very different personality, and it sounds like Gregg relishes the opportunity to play something different after so many years. That kind of change is a challenge that actors and writers tend to enjoy, so I don't see any reason to doubt them when they say that's what they're doing.

I remember Clark Gregg flat-out stating in early 2013 that he was going to have nothing to do with the upcoming SHIELD television show on ABC, but he would be tuned in like the rest of us. ;)
