Agents of Shield - Season 4

Well, after the absolutely incredible penultimate episode, I'm afraid the finale was a bit of a letdown. Too much was crammed in too quickly; a two-part finale like S2 had would have been ideal. And in the end, Ophelia was taken down too quickly to really be effective; I wish her and Coulson's fight had ended somewhere more dramatic, like the side of a volcano or something, rather than returning to HQ to end up in a random hallway. (Maybe a budget thing?) I would also have liked a dash of visual weirdness for Radcliffe's final scene - like the sunset or even the sun itself degrading into pixelation and exposed code.

SHIELD being publicly reconstituted as an authorized agency was a surprise earlier this season, leading me to wonder if that meant agents would start appearing the movies again, but it looks as though that's being walked back.

Welp, great season, even if the landing wasn't perfect. And I haven't done any AV Club user comments in a while, so...

As someone who respects our military and has friends who are vets, I never cared for the way the military are treated as cartoon characters in a lot of TV shows.
I'm a veteran, and I agree - but I also love Talbot. He may be bull-headed and pompous, but he's also brave, loyal to his friends, concerned for his troops, and determined to do the right thing whenever possible. He's a Big Damn Hero to me. :bolian:

So will this show become "Agents of SWORD"? What's going on?
May, Daisy, Jemma and Elena are trying to get that great big hill of hope... for a des-ti-na-tion. ;)

While live same night viewing is always preferred by the networks, the boost received by AoS' DVR numbers help explain why the show won a renewal, and why the move to Friday night is not the death sentence some may have fretted over.
Biggest rise in the rankings: “Agents of SHIELD.” The show averaged just a 0.7 the night it aired, tied for 29th place on the network. It rose 12 spots to 17th in both Live +3 (1.4) and Live +7 (1.6).

Good to see networks are paying more attention to DVR numbers and accepting the reality that not everyone wants to watch right away (or simply can't).

It is my understanding that the reason DVR numbers are less persuasive is two fold: first, the Nielson ratings are used primarily to set as rates, and DVR watchers are most likely to skip commercials. Second, if they do watch commercials, some of them are times for specific events like movie openings, sales, or restaurant promotions so time shifting makes the ad less effective because you may watch after the event is over.

I think you meant to write "ad rates."
I think you know we can figure that out.

Now, regarding the after-broadcast watches -- do those numbers include things where it's hard to skip commercials, such as Xfinity's On Demand, or the network's own service?

In THOSE cases, advertisers might still be interested... or maybe up their game with product placement (with ads just reinforcing their message)?

^^ I've always assumed that the answer is yes, otherwise there's not much purpose in disabling FF. I don't have much of a problem with ads-- aside from there being so many compared to when I was a kid (and the horrible things that are on screen during the story)-- because somebody has to pay the bills. At least some shows let you FF during the story, which is helpful if you only got to watch the first half and have to go back after 24 hours.

"Agents of Shield: Slingshot" has been nominated for an Emmy for "Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series".

I was impressed with Slingshot for what it was. They certainly didn't skimp on the effects and the entire cast of the show appeared. As far as I was concerned during my recent rewatch on Netflix, it was an official part of the fourth season.

Season four is now on Netflix.
Which is how I got to watch it, having fallen too far behind to catch up when it was originally shown.

A decent, but uneven season. A few high points - Fitz' storyline in the alternate universe. It's a credit to the actors that play both halves of FitzSimmons that the show creators can drag their characters through hell season after season, and they survive the journey with dignity and amazing dramatic performances.
Ghost Rider - again, an actor handles some awkwardness and messy plot development with grace and style.

Low points - whatever the heck that Russian guy was supposed to be. Once of the worse villains ever created for the show.
The Director/The Patriot. Just an odd, and unneeded extra bit of nonsensical drama.

I'm very curious if having Coulson teams in space means we can expect some minor crossover with Inhumans OR Thor: Ragnarok?
Also, with Avengers Infinity War coming up and reports of SLJ's Fury being on hand will we bring SHIELD back more officially in lieu of S4s storylines and will the movies at least mention it? I'm feeling a bit let down to at least not getting some lip service to this the last few films Phases.

Yeah, now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is back in the public eye, it is a little annoying that we haven't gotten some kind of reference to them in one of the movies, or even Netflix shows. I understand the logistics from technical standpoint, but from a story and universe building perspective it would be nice to get at least some kind of acknowledgement.

I think that in The Inhumans they now have an out. So now that the royalty acts because of Lash, Hive, and the Watchdogs, SHIELD will not be around. As been the case with every connection after The Winter Soldier come winter when AOS returns then they will try to make connections to the Inhumans miniseries

Well I'm a self-described MCU fanatic and proud of it, so I will watch it and am indeed looking forward to it. However, at this point, it looks like it may be the first MCU item that I don't buy on home release.:(

However as I said in the other thread, I think what we've seen from Inhumans so far is probably only from the very beginning of the story, probably only from the first episode. The shots of Medusa's hair in particular seem like a reveal to me. I'm sure there will be much more impressive usages of her hair as the story progresses.

Remember, they wanted to get something out for Comic-Con. They might not have had a large selection of available finished effect shots.
