Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 Discussion Threads. (Spoilers Likely)

Good point. Gonsalves' group, with his referring to Skye as a "thing," definitely would seem to be in favor of the registration.

First, his name is Robert Gonzales. Same spelling as Speedy Gonzales, or former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Gonsalves (or Gonçalves) is the Portuguese version of the name.

Second, as we've seen, his "group" is democratic and doesn't always agree on everything. We've seen Gonzales outvoted twice so far: First in the flashback, when Bobbi and the others convinced him to defy Fury's orders to destroy the carrier, and then in the present, when the other council members disagreed with his antagonistic approach to May and voted that he should offer her a seat on the council instead. So Gonzales himself is a hardliner, but his opinions don't dictate the council's choices.

My best guess is that it'll most likely be an 'Inhumans' centric show with a very X-Men like set-up, possibly as a lead into the movie.

I can't see them just doing a straight "Some Other Agents of SHIELD" spin-off. I suppose they could do a SWORD show with more of a cosmic/alien focus, but I fell like even that would have a bit too much overlap.

And judging by Aftershocks so is HYDRA oddly enough (yeah they had a council of evil that seemed to be dicussing who should replace Whitehall), so you'll forgive me if I don't base Captain America's SHIELD preferences just on that esspecially since Insight was supported by the World Security Council and he still thought it was a horrible idea.

Plus none of other SHIELD's leaders seemed elected by their agents so really its more of an oligarchy than a democracy.

But he still seems to be making the lion share of the decisions, in fact last week Coulson called Gonzales out on how despite how democratic other SHIELD is he only meeting with Gonzales and not anyone else on their ruling council.

Not to mention the hypocrticy it is to be going on about having a lack of secrets while secretly infiltrating another group of SHIELD agents.

Plus I'm not seeing anything that says their attitude toward superhumansuperhuman is different from Gonzales's which is going to be a problem.

I'd rather just have more Agent Carter. :vulcan:

I'm thinking it needs to be something different from the existing show, so that it isn't just "Agents of SHIELD: Miami" or something. Maybe they'll spin off the more overtly superheroic characters like Deathlok and Skye/Quake (and Mockingbird?) into a show that's more superpowers-oriented while AoS goes back to the more human-level spy-game stuff -- sort of like The Flash vs. Arrow.

Yes, there is nothing in this article that says the new show will be about SHIELD, only that it will spin off from story elements still to happen this season.

Who said those were mutually exclusive possibilities?

I'm also thinking that whatever they do as the spinoff is likely to be more based in the comics than AoS was. AoS was the "entry-level" show for general audiences -- it was the first taste of the MCU on television, so it started out as something comfortable and familiar, a procedural about normal, human government agents fighting crime and national-security threats. Basically, something the ordinary folks among the viewers -- and the advertisers -- would find cozy and unthreatening. But over time, especially this season, they've been ramping up the superheroic/sci-fi content and bringing in more elements from the comics. We started out with a cast of entirely original characters, or so we thought (since Coulson was created for the movies). But this season, we get several established comics characters like Mockingbird (or at least their namesakes like Hunter and Mack) added to the cast, and one of the "original" characters, Skye, turns out to be a comics character after all. And meanwhile we're getting more comics-based shows turning up on Netflix. The audience is primed and ready now, so there's no need for another entry-level, comics-lite show.

The CW did much the same thing with its DC shows. First, we got a grounded, naturalistic show (Arrow) about an antihero with no superpowers. Then, in the second season, the antihero became more of a conventional crimefighter-hero, and they started to fold in some sci-fi/superhuman elements (the Mirakuru formula) and introduced Barry Allen -- who gave Oliver a mask at last. Now they've got a Flash series with a ton of comic-booky action and powers and storylines, and Arrow is adding more powered characters, and they're preparing a spinoff with a whole team of superheroes (and a couple of super-antiheroes).

D'oh, the first time I wrote his name in a post, I did due dillegence, but this last time, I slipped. At least I didn't call him "Adama," as I really, really want to do! Plus, I don't really write out Speedy Gonzales much, and I'd prefer to forget Alberto Gonzales. ;)

Fury and the World Security Council disagreed, as well. I don't think their relationship to SHIELD was ever exposed. Hell, they left him in charge even after the Battle of New York. They were against the Avengers Initiative from the start. And, judging from Pierce's move at the Triskelion, they were Hydra-free.

I like the possiblity of a SWORD show, one that focuses on intergalactic threats, leaving SHIELD to focus on Earth-bound ones. Asgardian, Kree, etc. stuff could be relegated to SWORD, and they could cross-over with SHIELD on Inhuman stuff.

Hm... wonder if this does mean there won't be a midseason Agent Carter at the end of this year. On the other hand, as the EW article says, it does make an AoS third season sound like a sure thing.

Anyhow, cool ep this week. Over at the AV Club, people noted that in the midseason finale, Calvin Zabo specifically said he looked forward to reuniting with his family "in the Afterlife" - which we now know not to be strictly metaphorical. So it's likely he hoped to recover his wife's organs from Whitehall all along...

What about a Hydra show? We get to know and love the new characters as they're basically trying to destroy everything good in the world.

I would imagine the spinoff might fill a similar void that Agent Carter did and any AoS direct spinoff could cancel Agent Carter. I still say that Agent Carter would be perfect for a Netflix show IMO ;)

Moving Daisy/Sky out of AoS allows for a new character there as well. Maybe Agent 13 depending on how Emily VanCamp's Revenge fares with renewal.

As for new member candidates on my proposed Secret Avengers:
Have Lady Sif introduce us to Valkyrie. She could be the full liaison AoS needs with the Kree incursions
If the Ant-Man movie is a hit...Eric O'Grady as another Ant-Man...maybe?
Moon Knight: just let me dream about it for now, reality be damned.

Well, the one that Captain America endorses should be called "Mighty SHIELD."

And the other one would be kind of on the defensive after that, so maybe they'd be "Deflector SHIELD."

Well, all of those who would oppose his SHIELD must yield.

So they can be Yielding SHIELD.

I like Sci's terms: Gonzalez!SHIELD and Coulson!SHIELD

It's a good thing they didn't start out naming him Phil Simpson back in Iron Man, the Son of Simp doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Excellent episode. Loving the fact that Gonzales!SHIELD has some valid points in spite of their bigotry problem -- Coulson himself is somewhat sympathetic to them. I'm hoping that when this storyline is resolved, we'll see Coulson re-uniting these two factions.

I'm really surprised that Skye's mother is still alive. If she survived Reinhardt's murder of her... that does raise the question of just why it is that Cal felt such a level of unperturbed hatred and madness. Not to say that what he went through isn't an extremely traumatic event. But it also seems as though having the woman he loved back might, for most people, mitigate the level of trauma and resultant rage... I'm sure there are more revelations to come on this front.

FitzSimmons! They're back! Jemma was playing Bobbi and Gonzales the whole time. Also, she made Fitz his favorite sandwhich and wrote "Love, Jemma" on the note. My shipping is happy.

J. August Richards is back! And so is Dichen Lachman! The Marvel Comics Home For Former Joss Whedon Actors Show continues! ;)

Also, I hope Mack survives this storyline's resolution and redeems himself. This show really needs more black folk who aren't either one-note characters who die nobly to save other people, or loyal to the antagonists. Mike Peters helps in that regard (in spite of his somewhat antagonistic role in the pilot), but he's not there full-time. And Henry Simmons is a wonderful actor--it would be a shame to lose him.

Hoping we see more Hydra yet. They remain the show's most interesting villains.

ETA Re: Agent Carter. Cool as it was for Hayley Atwell to have her own show, I'd prefer to see her starring in movies. Preferably alongside Chris Evans. They have mad chemistry together.
