Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

So Bucky survived WWII?

Isn't that the point of the Winter Soldier plot, that we thought that he didn't survive, until we found out that he did?

Officially, he did not survive. The wall is reflecting his death in wwii

ETA: As for an It's All Connected explanation for why Sif is coming to Earth, my idea is that the Pagan hate group is Hydra, which is AIM, which is Centipede. Given their use of the Berserker staff, that makes it Asgardian business.

They're a little too well-dispersed across the entire post-SSR history for that. The fact that there are three logos and three departments (the latter a fact introduced and emphasized in this episode), and that one of the logos resembles the Science division logo at the top of the wall, would suggest that it's the three departments.

I still suspect not "three departments" - because SHIELD Academy likely has far more than three faculty divisions for various reasons involving long explanations of continuity - but three eras of operating history.

Getting superpowers from an authorized bit of SHIELD sci-tech lab work gets you filed in the "registered gifted" index, not a name-listing on the local Wall of Valor.

Lab accident equals superpowers. I think that's a rule. You only wind up on the wall if they think it killed you. ( Then you come back and kill people you hold responsible.)

end result is their name goes up on the wall :)

Since we have about two weeks to kill, I thought I'd bring up something else. When deciding which characters the show can use and which they can't, Marvel did an interesting thing. Rather than say "these are the characters we plan to use elsewhere, don't use them," they gave a list of specific characters who could be used. At the same time, if there are other characters the show wants to use, they're free to ask and get permission. Graviton is an example of the latter and I suspect Blizzard was as well.

It seems unlikely that Marvel's list consists entirely of C-list villains, so the question is who they would give permission to use. Certainly SHEILD agents like Hand are likely choices, but I'm curious what villains you would think could belong on a list like this.

I'm beginning to think that "The Index" is sort of a meta-joke aimed at the list of characters available to AoS.

Skye: "You have a list?"

Coulson: "It's a very short list."

:p

The Circus of Crime
The Serpent Society
1950s Atlas Era Monsters of the Month (from JiM, Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, etc.)
Baron Blood
The Leader (pick up the thread left in Incredible Hulk)
Lady Bullseye
Man-Thing (this could lead to the inclusion of A.R.M.O.R. or W.A.N.D. on the show)
Dire Wraiths (the old Rom aliens)
The Fixer (one-time member of the Thunderbolts)
The Night Shift (WCA baddies)
Nuke

It's hard to imagine characters not already claimed or put on hold due to possible future use from the sprawl of Marvel properties in development or near to development. The Defenders project at Netflix alone probably claims nearly all of the street-level bad guys that were left over after Sony claims the Spider-Man villains.

On kind of a side note: did anyone else notice the mention of a Professor Vaughn teaching at SHIELD academy? My first thought was Wendell Vaughn, a.k.a. Quasar, who I seem to remember was associated with SHIELD (or at least Project Pegasus) before gaining his energy bands.

With Guardians of the Galaxy on the horizon, maybe the show will introduce some cosmic elements -- like Quasar or S.W.O.R.D. -- into the mix.

Ugh, that list is terrible. I'd rather create my own villains and get criticized for it if that's what I had to work with. My hope is Marvel gave them AIM to work with. I've slowly warmed up to MODOK, for example. The only question in my mind is of Captain America 3 would want those characters.

If they went with AIM, they could have Strucker as a recurring villain in season 2 leading up to his defeat by The Avengers.

On the other hand, the fact that Graviton was not on the list kind of kills my theory.

Fitz also mentioned Professor Vaughn in "0-8-4".

As for your list, The Leader is not out of the question, but I'd rather see him in a Hulk sequel. The Serpent Society would be cool to see, not on AoS.

Save Baron Blood for Agent Carter.

The rest are either too cosmic, too connected to a in-development character or definite C-list.

Thought the midseason premiere/Coulson recovery ep (#11) was the fourth lame ep in a row, but "Seeds" (#12) was a big improvement, the first good ep since "The Hub" (#7), and the best since the series' high mark to date, "Eye Spy" (#4). Hoping for more quality work as good, better than, and no worse than these.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a second solo Hulk film any time soon. At least not until after Avengers 2.

Personally I think both The Leader and Abomination could make appearances of some kind in AoS. Of course Blonsky would have to be in his human form since I can't see a TV show being able to pull him off otherwise. Plus of course there's no way the team could contain him if he transforms.

One cool thing about the Hulk would be that they could introduce Clay Quartermain as another SHIELD agent. What do you think, can they get Mark Ruffalo like they got Jamie Alexander?
