"Agent Carter" season one discussion and spoilers

What an excellent episode this was. Thank goodness there was no cliffhanger, just that ominous scene with Ivchenko and Zola foreshadowing HYDRA. Although pouring Cap's blood into the river may be a cliffhanger. If there's a second season, it may be Agent Carter II: Attack of the Super Fish.

It was pretty wrenching for all the main characters. Stark took responsibility for what he did, because he cares about what Peggy thinks-- even though she didn't hold him responsible. And then Ivchenko magnified his guilt and used it to control him. Jarvis very nearly had to shoot Stark down, and then took the initiative to steal Cap's blood and give it to Peggy. And Peggy not only had her showdown with Dotty, but also had to talk Stark down by talking out her own feelings about Cap-- hopefully the next season, if there is one, will feature a Peggy more at peace. I liked her smile at the end when Sousa asked her out. It's too bad we couldn't have seen more of that. Thompson learned to respect and appreciate Peggy, but he was a jerk right up to the end. Disappointing, but realistic.

While I could nitpick a few things here and there, I really think this was a magnificent series. I can't wait to get it on DVD.

Picked up a few interesting tidbits in the writers commentary pod-cast with Fazekas and Butters. (Apparently they do a commentary with the writers every week. Who knew?)

Fenhoff's ring has no powers. It's the equivelant of the swinging pocket watch.

Midnight Oil/Item 17 was the MCU's version of the mad-bomb.

Dum-Dum appeared in early versions of the script. It was originally him in the plane chasing down Stark. Neal McDonough was unavailable and they changed it Jarvis, which they felt worked better.

The suggestion for the Zola cameo came from Feige and Espisito, as a way to show the origins of the Winter Soldier project.

Apparently, they do this for Agents of SHIELD as well. I'll have to check it out.

^I haven't heard any negative critical reception toward Agent Carter. I tend to frequent genre-oriented sites rather than mainstream, but I've seen nothing but raves for the show.

Yep the reviews overall have generally been favorable from major critics & sites.

Heh...I was thinking the same thing...assuming there were fish in that river in the 40s. If there are today, I'm sure they must already be mutants....

I'm OK with Thompson winding up in charge at the end...it would have been a bit sudden for Peggy to get promoted to chief from serving coffee a couple episodes earlier. If there is a Season 2, maybe we'll see Peggy's skills being put to better use under her new boss. He may be a jerk, but he's seen not only what she can do, but what her opposite number from Leviathan is capable of.

Oh, yes, it worked immensely better. With Dugan in the plane, there would've been nowhere near the same emotional investment. Sure, he's been associated with Stark before, but doesn't have the same close connection and loyalty that Jarvis has. Also, he's a soldier, so making the decision to shoot Stark down would've been easier for him to live with. For once, I'm really, really glad that a movie actor was unavailable for a guest spot.

Howard sure does have a nice collection of war surplus fighters - fully equipped with their guns and ammo - all fueled up, armed and ready to go.

I'm rather curious now what Jarvis's wartime role was that he was rated as a pilot, but with no experience shooting people down. Obviously he's not RAF since he was an Adj for a General (the RAF doesn't have Generals) so that rules out fighter and bomber pilot experiance. Transport pilot for the Army Air Corps or the Paras perhaps?

Bomber pilots generally didn't shot down people either - that's what they had air gunners for.

I think Faustus' plan was based on a Captain America story from the 70s where Fautus stole weapons from Stark International and tried to use them on the populace of NYC.

That's the nice thing about the MCU, so many of these plots and characters are from the comics but the viewing audience is no longer alienated and thinking "Ugh, comic book stories!" when they watch.

Wait, was he referred to as Faustus onscreen and I missed it? Or are we making assumptions?

I'll have to look for that, but it doesn't mean he was the writer.

Now if he was autographing the book of Dr. Faustus....

He was referred to as Johann Fennhoff, which is the real name of the comics Dr. Faustus. Source. It was an assumption up to that point, but it's not an assumption after that. He was reading the book (or, more accurately, play) that the comics character takes the name Dr. Faustus from.

I wonder if Dottie's jealously of Carter is programmed into her. This has been a great season though and Hayley Atwell really shone though and greatly epanded on what we know Carter.

One thing that never happened that I expected was for them to explicitly link the Red Room to ScarJo Black Widow. For them to call Dottie "Black Widow".

OK, so those of you who spotted these references failed in your geekly duty to publicly squeee in delight over them.
