"Agent Carter" season one discussion and spoilers

Except for the twist with Dot, we thought last night's epi was sub-par. Frankly, the show is getting boring. Yeah, Stark is a jerk, we get that. Yeah, the 40s were crappy for women, we get that. Some real character development for ANYBODY would be nice.

He could have been testing her?

Maybe Chad is working on a theory that Peggy is this mysterious woman they're after?

If Peggy whacks him, she's deadly enough to be the spy.

If Peggy doesn't whack him, she's patient enough to be the spy.

...

Dago, there is a working theory that Dot is Yelena Belova, the blond Black Widow who shows up from time to time in marvel comics. Younger than Natasha and still loyal to Mother Russia who's adventures mostly seem to be slightly psychosexual in nature.

Nice that the temporary boss recognizes Peggy's plight. But, hey, DO something about it!

It wasn't nice at all. He didn't acknowledge Peggy's plight to sympathize with her, but to put her in her place, to tell her that she was deluded to imagine she deserved the same respect as a man.

Hm. Could be. I read it like he acknowledged it, but since that was status quo, he couldn't do anything about it. But your read works too, since he is a bit of a jerk.

^The guy routinely tortures prisoners. I'd say "a bit of a jerk" is putting it mildly, even if such behavior was pretty normal for law enforcement at the time.

The brick walls explain how Peggy and Howard can raise their voices at each other, but Peggy's not busted for having a man in her room.

Yeah, I was going to say that. Maybe an accidental good idea, but it explains what could otherwise be a plot hole.

I thought there were nice character moments with the handicapped Agent trying to connect with the homeless person. The forlorn look he had when the guy just wanted to get drunk was a pretty strong moment, imo.

I'm also intrigued what blond agent's drunk comments were about. I think there's some potential going forward.

Was this the first time t hat Thompson called Peggy Marge? I don't recall him doing that before. It shows how little he cares for her because he calls her by a name she doesn't go by. He's a total jerk.

The story of the first female FBI special agent

Every so often, the FBI will do a "Celebrating Women's History" post where they talk about the three first female special agents. Two of them were hired in the early 1920s and promptly "resigned" when a new FBI Director took office. But in 1924, at the repeated urging of Congressman Graham of Pennsylvania, 45-year-old Lenore Hoover was promoted from "special employee" (aka investigative assistant) to "special agent".

This is the FBI's standard blurb about her:

In November 1924, Lenore Houston, an employee in Philadelphia, became the first and only female special agent hired by Director Hoover. While serving in the Philadelphia office, Miss Houston received excellent performance ratings and was earning $3,100 a year by April 1927. She resigned in 1928, shortly after being transferred to the Washington Field Office.

The next female agents were hired only after the death of J. Edgar Hoover, in the 1972.

There were plenty of great character moments in this episode, from Jarvis's discomfort and upbraiding of Stark, to Peggy being inspired to be a better woman by Cap, and Stark being inspired to be a better man by Peggy. And Dooley tricking the German prisoner with a breath mint. And, of course, the interrogation of the drunk.

The blond cop's drunken comments to Peggy were interesting. He said that no man would ever consider her an equal, and that it was wrong, but that's the way it is. He also accidentally called her Peggy. I think we have a little foreshadowing there.

And I loved how the matron told Peggy that girls shouldn't read Freud. :rommie:

I enjoyed the episode. It wasn't too much of any one thing. Not overly heavy on action sequences nor just drawn out talking heads. I'd say it was a solid mix but at the same time felt like a bridging episode. It is the midway point so perhaps that's why Howard is back, kinda closing out the arc of where are his weapons and he & Peggy confronting his secrecy issues with her, when he shouldn't. All the while revealing the deeper drama afoot with the boarding residents as we now try to clear Howards name and prove who stole the weapons leading to the conclusion 4 episodes from now.

Okay. So who is it that Don Heck and Dick Ayers get "special thanks" credit for here? Betting that it's what's backing "Dottie"...and it turns out that I'm at least partways wrong.

Mueller's from Sgt. Fury # 14.
So that takes care of Ayers.

Mr. Heck? Probably my original guess.

I must have been completely asleep at the wheel because this is the first episode I noticed them calling her Marge. I thought it was just meant as an insult to her. I didn't realize this was a cover name for her.

I also figured something was up with Dottie when we first saw her because of the actress playing her. Bridget Regan co-starred on Legend of the Seeker.

You were right the first time. It's not a cover name. They all know she's Peggy Carter, Captain America's old flame. "Marge" is just a derisive nickname they've given her.

"Peggy" and "Marge" are both derived from the name "Margaret," which is presumably Peggy's actual given name.

Howard Stark was created by Archie Goodwin and Don Heck.

It's not a cover name. Peggy is a nickname for Margaret. Agent Thompson just can't be bothered to remember her preferred nickname -- most of the time. He did call her Peggy once, when he was telling her that she'd never be treated as an equal. Which implies that he does know what she prefers to be called but generally doesn't care.

She's also recently come off a run as a femme fatale on White Collar.

None of you are watching Jane the Virgin???

Shame, for shame, shame.

Bridget has had a several half naked lesbian sex scenes in there over the last year.

Not that that is a fair reason to watch a TV show.

Well, if it was titled "Bridget the Half-Naked Lesbian" instead of "Jane the Virgin" . . . :)
