Admiral Janeway, your personal thoughts?

Devilpogostick

Yeah, that cameo in Star Trek Nemesis that had a mixed reaction to viewers (though frankly, it's the least concerning thing about Nemesis) of which Janeway, now an admiral not long after Voyager, gave Picard orders to advance the plot. To be honest, what were your thoughts regarding her rank?

Me, I did raise a brow but ultimately it did seem honestly fitting. Managing a return trip home from a vastly unexplored region of space, as well as the various encounters with new aliens, for years alone is no mean feat. And she came in heroic fashion once the crew got back the Alpha Quadrant. But...I bet looking at the logs and probably taking in whatever they could get...She might never command a starship again.

But frankly, Janeway was fine with the deskjob. Seven years of trying not to have her crew killed in a consistent basis while trying to keep her ideals intact probably took its toll and she didn't care about how it's kind of a gilded cage of sorts. Picard had his chance but pretty much refuse the promotion if it does come around, not to mention he's probably in a rut with Starfleet given his recent defiance of their orders lately that finally sank any chances to convince him otherwise.

My opinion really.

I'd have to agree. Though what we saw in VOY never really gave the sense of a ship alone on a perilous journey (well I never found it to give that sort of impression a lot of the time), that was essentially what Voyager was, so any Captain who could get their crew through seven years of that would be deserving of a promotion--even with some of the questionable decisions made over that time.

The one thing that's always bothered me was that she jumped from Captain to Vice Admiral. Did Nemesis not have the budget to make a set of one-star admiral pips for Janeway? Even a Rear Admiral I could've lived with, but not such a huge jump in her rank.

A minute 20?

F###########k.

I can't believe that this is the most important minute of my life.

What Kathy should have said.

1. Reemans are aggressive telepaths. Install shielding, and broadcast distortion on the telepathic bandwidths starting 5 minutes ago. For all you know, this transmission could be a Reeman mind trick, like that time a glowing beach ball made you think that you were forty years in the past, and you tried to destroy Enterprise because it looked dangerously Ferengi.

2. Send in multiple teams. Locate representative of the Former senate. See how happy they are about becoming counter revolutionaries. Get some intelligence on the ground before the march into the senate to get murdered. We have a duty to respect the Romulan Government who stood with us against the Dominion (Whoever they are) and give them a chance to win their world back if this Shinzon person turns out to be a real asshole from a family of assholes.

3. No one in the Admiralty tipped off Shinzon about how you would be the closest ship, when he decided to kill Alan Dale, and they didn't wait for you, or rush/slow their plans according to your proximity, because this is all obviously a convoluted plan to harvest your blood, so I'm not going to spend the next 4 days trying to ferret out a mole in my own ranks, because I'm really good at that. Oh and it's highly unlikely that Shinzon murdered your brother and nephew for their Picard DNA, and for gods sake don't show Shinzon how to traverse to infinite mirror universes so that your clone can live forever by taking thousands of Picards from thousands of alternate realities to keep his humours balanced. No, sorry, I did not know that he was you clone, you would think that I would know that, right? A war hero who is now the absolute ruler of the Star Empire, why if they have money, it will be on coins any day now.

4. Ambassador Spock will not meet you there, and he isn't already there, and don't look into how Reunification is going while you on Romulus either, because it's not like that #### wasn't a great two parter in your series. Reunification really is a word. Promise.

5. Maybe stock up on Torpedoes so you don't run out, after four minutes of fighting. Oh, and rather then giving the Star Empire access to all that new military hardware we invented, if you do start losing a battle, please remember to blow up your ship, before you let them take half your crew as sex slaves and the other half as food.

6. Sorry about killing your girlfriend, or was she your wife?

7. I have a super cool impression of your voice, do you want to hear it?

8. You know how you lost two slippery little Ferengi shits in the delta Quadrant? Well I found them, and they outsmarted me too! Wow! We are the completely the same kind of dummy!

9. Q tried to #### me. Did Q try to #### you? I was flattered, but you'd think that someone who could look like anything would not chose to have such obvious pudgy love handles. Oh? Q didn't try to #### you? Don't worry, I still think that you are special.

10. Wait two weeks. Lets let the Klingons take a stab at this first, and we can take the spoils when they've finished burning each others empires to the ground.

I liked Star Trek Nemesis more than most, but I've always grated at the franchise's (or fanboys') needs to cross characters over in winky little cameos. It was nice when McCoy showed up in Encounter at Farpoint. Spock in Unification was special in some ways, but felt more like a commercial for TUC than anything truly organic.

Everything else I've been very "meh" about.

And since Janeway is not one of my favorite characters...no, I could have done without this.

Oh, and 11. If your ship happens to get boarded by these Reman assholes, just turn the interior lighting up in your ship. You won't need to waste lives on a pointless shootout, as they'll all be on the floor, screaming like pussies with their hands over their faces.

This was my struggle too. Her move in rank was the more implausible. Cameo was fine, but Picard has been a captain for how long? Apparently he took Kirk's advice to heart.

Born in 2305.

Assumed command of the Stargazer in 2333 at the age of 28. The Star Gazer was lost in 2355, Picard dicked around for almost 10 years before encountering Farpoint in 2364 at the age of 59.

In 2379, at the age of 74, some spunky kid gave him lip about marching orders to Romulus.

The main impact it had over in the UK, as far as I remember, is Nemesis came out while Voyager was a couple of seasons away from the end on TV. So there I am, sat in the cinema and Janeway pops up and drops the bomb that Voyager got home fine.

Didn't it 'get home' a few different times in the series, or was that just the finale?

I liked the idea that Janeway became an admiral--I figured that the Voyager was probably decommissioned and put in a museum after her return. Janeway being an admiral isn't that terribly implausible--Kirk might have regretted being an admiral and Picard may not ever want to be one, but Janeway might have relished working from a desk and being able to go home to her house every night (especially after being stuck in the Delta Quadrant for seven years). I also think some captains may not want to be captains forever--for all we know, Janeway's career goal may have always been to ultimately be an admiral.

It's probably just a case of billet. Janeway's new job may have warranted a vice-admiral. And if all admirals are appointed, then they don't all necessarily have to begin as rear admirals, IMO.

Mulgrew's scene was nothing more than a glorified cameo. There was absolutely nothing she said in that scene that some generic admiral couldn't have said (i.e. she did not once mention anything to do with the Voyager TV series.)

As for her rank? Meh, who cares. Like I said, it was just a cameo. If anything, I felt mild irritation that she was giving Picard orders.

BTW, wasn't the original intention for that scene to be with Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine? Which would have made, like, zero sense. Of course, since most of the entire movie made little sense, who would have noticed one more inanity?

Pretty sure the plan was that Seven of Nine be a guest at the Riker/Troi wedding.

If Kirk gets to be an Admiral after a 5-year mission, why not Janeway after being stranded for 7 years in the Delta Quadrant?

I for one liked her little cameo role in Nemesis.

Good point. It comes down to this for me - given the choice would I rather have that little cameo in that makes no real difference to the film or a complete stranger? I'd rather have Janeway. It's what films like this do, a bit of fan service isn't it?

I actually have no problem with that cameo. It's the clumsy name-dropping between the various TV series, that does annoy me slightly. Nog going on about "Picard's desk" for example.

The promotion never bothered me. And it was fine with the cameo in and of it self. But I can only image the look on Kate's face when she read the script and that dialog--which can only be described as awkward at best.
