Re: Exelcsior Class

Yeah, I don't think so either. So what excuse could they arrive at for not reusing the brewery, I wonder.

Do they even have to have an on-screen excuse. Could they just change the set? In the other Star Trek movies there were unexplained changes - the added consoles on the Ent-D bridge, the uniform changes from TMP to TWOK, the various ENT bridge detail changes in the original cast movies...

Or the story can just take place several years after this one and let the audiences presume the upgrade was done in the interim.

Or, Scotty could simply have been let loose on the ship and voila - these are his upgrades.

Re: Instead of Khan in a sequel.. how bout...

While I think it is important that they do something new, if they can put a unique spin on an old story, then I could go for that. The only thing is that they have to make it so that it is new. I don't want to see the TOS story with new people.

With that said, the big screen isn't the best medium for a Trek comedy, like what was proposed for Trouble with Tribbles. Big screen Trek needs to stay an action story sprinkled with humor.

Re: Exelcsior Class

I think they're going to hold off a little bit on having it in the next film, but maybe have it in the background under construction or something.
But I would LOVE to see Ryan Church and John Eaves do some concept art for a new Excelsior.

I don't think Eaves would change the Excelsior much, as it is his favorite Trek ship. IIRC, he was even reluctant to add the new side panels we saw on the Enterprise-B.

I'm sure Church wouldn't hesitate to carve up the ship, and remake it, though.

Y'know, I've been thinking about what I'd like to see in the next movie (I just love the sound of that phrase "next movie"), and I was reminded about one of the things I liked in the original Trek. How can you "boldly go" into the same aliens and menaces we've seen for 40 years? I say bring in a new threat and insert some of the lines from the first series to keep us grounded in Trek.

One of the problems with the current Trek is that we/re always running into Khan or the Doomsday Machine or some other, familiar thing. One of the things I liked about Trek XI was that we had a relatively new threat sprinkled with lines like "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?"

We may be familiar with the elements from the original Trek, but let's not use the old foes as gimmicks. That would drag Star Trek back to its ho-hum status.

Although I'm sure he'd want to be paid to do the design.

Re: Exelcsior Class

The Enterprise is brand new. Unless the next movie is taking place a number of years after this one, then I don't see how they could plausibly introduce a superior design.
I've kind of been wondering how they can even scrap and improve on the brewery look, with the Enterprise being brand new. Was there enough damage done by the Narada to justify a refit?

Maybe Engineering was due to be finished on Tuesday? Seriously. The ship was pressed into service early, manned by cadets no less, to help the Vulcans. The Engineering section we saw may, indeed, have been "naked."

Shouldn't this go to Future Trek?

It won't happen. The Enterprise is brand new. Unless the next movie is taking place a number of years after this one, then I don't see how they could plausibly introduce a superior design.

Why not? They re-did the Enterprise bridge no less than four times in all six movies (TMP to TWOK, TVH to TFF, TFF to TUC) and even Re-did the Bird of Prey's bridge in TVH, all with no explanation of any kind.

Basically, they can change the set any way they feel like, no explanation needed.

This is functioning as sort of a Future of Trek annex within the Trek XI forum, and was created originally out of several similar threads about ideas for sequels, shortly after the movie came out. There's another thread of the same sort specifically about sequel ideas involving Khan and one specifically about the future of the surviving Vulcan race. All have had newer threads added to them periodically.

There was an announcement posted recently to the effect that Trek XII/Future Trek series threads really do belong in FoT, but calls on whether they actually get moved there or added to one of the above threads are being made on a case-by-case basis.

Re: Exelcsior Class

They can always use some throw out line, if necessary, about them discovering some sort of problem with the system; while reinstalling the warp cores that were in need of replacement. Perhaps they used some input from Mr. Scott (and perhaps some details about prime universe engineering tech relayed from Old Spock) in making changes to the system.

I do hope engineering looks a bit different and I agree about the numerous changes in the other movies.

My bad. I'll just wait on the transporter pad over here for my turn on the away mission.
