Actor spotting

The last time DeForest Kelley was a speaker at the Denver Star Trek convention I asked him if he and Paul Fix had ever discussed the fact that De effectively took Paul's job. He said no, it never came up.

I didn't actually see him, but Jonathan Frakes was doing the narrative of a History Channel program on Megaquake 10.0. Pretty interesting stuff. And yes, there were actual scientists talking about it.

I just noticed Ray Wise (who I'll always think of as the Picard-worshiper sap in "Who Watches the Watchers?") as part of the vicious criminal gang in "Robocop" (probably only the second time I've seen the movie and first time in at least ten years). Weird to see him go from playing a meek, frantic wuss of a character on TNG to a sneering bastard thug. He even used a crane to drop some heavy steel on Robocop, very nearly killing him, before Robocop's partner blew him up! The villains are such incredibly crude and sadistic assholes in that movie...part of its charm.

There was the 80's Twilight Zone which had lots of Trek alumni:

Dead Run:

- John DeLancie as an executive in charge of who goes to heaven or hell

- Brent Spiner as a draft dodger

A Message From Charity:

- James Cromwell as a farmer in colonial times

- Robert Duncan McNeill as a teen in the 80's

But Can She Type?:

- Jonathan Frakes as a guy at a party who hits on Pam Dawber's character; he backs off when he finds out she's a secretary (this is a universe where secretaries are world famous celebs)

The Star:

- Fritz Weaver (Conservator Kovat from DS9) as a scientist on a space mission

Tim Russ also did two 80's TZ eps. "Kentucky Rye" as a cop, and "Voices in the Earth" where he was a member of an expedition to reclaim a long since abandoned Earth.

Actor Andrew Robinson who is "Garak" from DS9 in the movie "Cobra" with Sylvester Stallone. It made a bad movie more interesting to me because one of my favorite DS9 characters was in it. :techman:

So I have a few

My mom and I were watching her old tapes of All My Children from who knows how long ago, I actually want to know how she got them, and Robert Duncan McNeill was on back in the 80's he played Charlie Brent.

I was watching the Secret of NIHM and realized the the main rat kid was Wil Wheaton.

Rene Auborjonois plays Chef Louis in both Little Mermaid's.

Whoopi Goldberg plays the octopus in Toy Story 3

Adding to RDM, he's a producer for Chuck now. I just found that out last night.

Kate Mulgrew played Red Claw in the Batman animated cartoon back in the 90's.

And my dumbest actor spotting came within Trek:

I know Jeffrey Combs will be in ENT(I'm on the first season), I however did no know that he was in an episode of Voyager. I went from watching Waltz to watching Tsunkatse for some reason and there he was. *facepalm* I want to know how I missed that.

All of that was in the past week.

I always felt that one thing the Trek producers did very well was to turn capable but lesser-known actors into stars and good supporting players.

As a result, I'm always finding familiar faces in earlier roles in 1959s-1960s reruns. and noting the promise that they show.

Andy was also in "Profile in Silver" from the 80's TZ. He played JFK.

This isn't exactly a character spotting but its something that broke my brain the other day.

I was looking at Mutant X and I had to do a double take of the character Adam Kane. It looked so much like Malcolm Reed that I had to do a double take, then a triple take before wiking it.

Doesn't Dominic Keating look like a clone of John Shea ?

These are all great, guys, just great. Oh, and to bring up one that I just thought of, Kate Mulgrew was in an episode of "Cheers." Maybe more than one. It's the first role I can remember seeing her in (I mean, I know she had lots of others, but this is the first one I noticed her in.) She played a politician who had the hots for Sam, and she was really good in it, too.

He reminds me even more of Paul McGann, Lieutenant Bush in Hornblower.

Marina Sirtis played an Alzheimer's patient in last week's Grey's Anatomy. Only two scenes from what I recall, but she got a few good speeches and got to sport a Persian accent.

^ She was very good too. Marina has really matured as an actress over the years. (I wish she would work more. I love seeing her.)

And JustKate, Mulgrew was in three episodes of Cheers playing a love interest for Ted Danson's Sam Melone character. I think it was the fourth or fifth season. She also guested once on Murphy Brown.

I was catching up on the rest of the Twilight Zone episodes that make up the entire 1950s/1960s show....and I saw Paul Comi (Lt. Stiles) from 'Balance of Terror'....on the episode titled, 'The Parallel' and I saw Arlene Martel (or Arlene Sax) again on the episode 'What You Need.'

I say 'again' because I've seen 'What You Need' a couple of times.

Just saw Natalia Nogulich (Admiral Nechayev) in the 1991 movie "Homicide". A little strange to see her playing such a nice, friendly dame after she was such a cold authority figure on TNG.

I'm watching "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." for the first time and I was happy to see Denise Crosby appear in the third episode (and Robert Picardo was in the second one).

Although I never much cared for her characters on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (with the exception of in "Yesterday's Enterprise", where she had a terrific script to work with and gave her best performance), I'm always pleased to see her show up in other things (i.e. "48 Hrs.", "Dexter").

She played the sheriff of a town made up entirely of woman. It was good to see her once again playing a tough and proactive character, and this time, one much more restrained than Tasha.

Unfortunately, at a crucial moment she fails to perform a certain action quickly enough due to nervousness. I felt like yelling, "Dammit Tasha! You screwed up again!" :p

I play this little game at times when there's nothing worth watching on TV - i flip through the channels and count how many actors I can spot who have been on Trek. Sometimes its easy (Bakula, Plummer, F. Murray Abraham, etc) but mostly its extras or guest stars. So far my personal record was 7 actors in one full channel pass.

Not seen it for a few years, but there's an episode of TJ Hooker which has Shatner, Bob O'Reilly, Marc Alaimo and James Darren in it. Don't think Richard Herd featured.
