Academy Awards discussion thread

Plenty do. I grew up watching classic films- and I knew who Bette Davis, Orson Welles, Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh and others were long before I knew who the big stars of my generation were.

Same here.

Nice to see Dark Knight take another award. Though I wouldn't have minded Ben Burtt taking another one home for Wall-E.

Hmm, I never knew they were so big with the younger generation, so are they all watching them on Turner Classic or renting (downloading?) them?:)
That and DVD's/VHS I had when growing up. I also watched to study the technical aspects of films. I grew up watching Abbott n Costello.

Why even make such a fuss over action VFX movies, show a great montage of actin films and nominate Button when you know the Academy will choose Button because it's the safe choice? It's not even in the same category as those action movies, which should get it's own category.

Wow, they're sort of compressing the awards. One presenter for four awards!

Boy, Slumdog is just sweeping the awards! :techman:Though I think the editing was more impressive on The Dark Knight and Benjamin Button.

VFX has nothing to do with action. The other 2 VFX nominated films just happened to be action films.

I don't even think the VFX for TCCoBB was that special, honestly. I'm sure it was hard work, but you watch CG long enough and your eye can pick out moments where it goes CG. Not always, but I did notice it in BB.

Then how did you not notice it in Ironman. It was blatantly obvious.

Or did you?

And my mom was an audio-visual librarian when I was a little girl...she made sure to take me to festivals both at her library and local theaters as soon as I was old enough. My earliest film memories are part Disney/part Citizen Kane!

Oh. Yeah. Because I was so sure there was a real Iron Man suit.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was all CG.

I saw Abbott and Costello films although I saw more of Laurel and Hardy. Great stuff!

As in it LOOKED CG and not photo real.
And ya Brad Pitt actually had an 80 year old face.

I do believe this show is going to go way past midnight.

Jerry Lewis getting the Humanitarian Award. HEEEY LAAAYYY-DIES!

My vote would have been Iron man too :)

Iron Man did a great job on the visual effects. The whole time I watched the movie I knew it was completely fake and yet my eyes wanted to believe it.

BB, I knew they used CG, but it didn't seem real at all, even though I knew it took quite an effort to make.

I'm actually stunned to see Eddie Murphy after he left the Oscars in a huff like a giant crybaby when he didn't win the Academy Award a few years back.

Your opinion. Respected.

I would personally put Dark Knight above Iron Man though. Esp since they were working with 8k plates. Some serious detail they had to pull off.
