A toy you wanted...

When you were a kid then it's likely that like may of us there was some toy or other you wanted at one time but, alas, never got. Mind you maybe you finally did get it as an adult out of some sense of nostalgia...or you never really grew up. :)

Anyway I was watching an episode of classic Flintstones the other day when I was reninded of this.

When I was a kid of about 6-8 (it was a long time ago) I really wanted a replica toy of Fred Flinstone's car, the one seen in the opening credits. My mother searched high and low for it but never found one. Such is life. Several decades later I came across one, but the desire had long since passed so I didn't pick one up even for the sake of nostalgia.

Anyone else?

NEVER lose your "child", man, and run from people that tell you it does not matter. Get that Flintstonemobile right now and display it with fondness and pleasure.

My Toy wish was the Chariot from the Jupiter II...I was 7. My Mom looked high and low, no dice. I cried.

Fast-forward to 2007, my 50th Birthday. My Mom's gift? An Original Chariot from the Jupiter II.

I cried

i always wanted the Ghostbusters firehouse. i was a huge GB fan as a kid. it was the first show i was crazy about. i had tons of action figures, vehicles and a lot of the role play toys like the proton pack and ghost trap...but i never got the firehouse.

i've seen it at conventions, toy shops and ebay. i've thought about buying it as an adult...but it would just sit on a shelf like Castle Greyskull and Snake Mountain and just gather dust. i do have the containment unit from the firehouse though. i found it at a flea market years ago. i put loose change in it.

I wanted a racing car set VERY MUCH and I did not get one because I was a girl.

The kid up the street had one and I got to touch it ONCE. After that I could not touch it because I was a girl (actual reason given by shitty kid). That was when I was about 6. Over the years I would come across racing car sets from time to time, sometimes set up by the dad in a garage and huge, but there were always all boys playing with it while the girls would be playing elsewhere and I never asked to try it because I had learned my lesson.

This still kinda bothers me, the denied pleasures of making little cars zoom around a track. Though I am not one bit interested in such things these days.

^^ It was the same when I was a kid. I was always berated for doing "girl" things and had little luck getting girls interested in "guy" things.

Anyway, back in the 60s, when the space program was big, there was a line of toys called Major Matt Mason. It consisted of several astronaut action figures and about a million accessories. I had a couple of the astronauts and a handful of the accessories, but we could never afford more than that. I had a little catalog of all the toys that were available and I used to read that catalog like it was a novel, wishing I could have all that stuff. It would probably cost a fortune to get it all now.

^^I had Major Matt Mason, the Space Station and the Walker. They were a lot of fun. The toy I never got was space related too, the G.I. Joe Space Capsule. I had a lot of Joes, the Jeep and the Footlocker, but I never managed to get that capsule...

I was seriously into M.A.S.K as a kid and had pretty much all of the related toys I wanted but I did also wanted a Millennium Falcon and never got that. They still look so good

Quite right

Now stop moaning and go make me a sandwich, woman!

Of course there were also some toys I wanted and actually got.

In 1966 I was 7 and was really into Batman. At that age I had no idea what camp was. That Christmas I found under the Christmas tree a Corgi Batmobile that launched plastic pellets and had a flip out chain cutter. To my 7 year old hands that toy was huge and I loved it. My cousin was so jealous he offered me anythng I could want from his toy collection in exchange. I declined with hardly any hesitation.

I still wonder what happened to that toy. I still like that Batmobile design even though it makes zero sense.

In 1970 I was 11 years old and Batman on television was behind me (having discovered good Batman in the comics). But Batman and other superheroes now paled beside Star Trek. I desperately wanted a toy Enterprise of any kind. I made cardboard cut-and-fold models of the E as a desperate measure. But that Christmas I got my first AMT model of the Enterprise. And although I hadn't asked for it along with the E I also received the AMT Klingon Battle Cruiser.

That Christmas I was on the freakin' Moon.

I always wanted a TOS communicator, phaser and tricorder since I was a kid. A few weeks ago, I splurged and got the Diamond Select set.

Dammit, that's a good story.

My parents never really understood my love of Star Trek when I was younger. I think it perplexed them to no end that my "Star Trek hobby" endured throughout adulthood and never died. The day I knew they were finally good with it was when I was about 45. Dad and Mom went down to Ocala Florida to visit his brother and one of the day trips they took was to Cape Canaveral. When they came back they brought me a gift of a print of space where you could see earth backdropped by a bazillion stars. On the bottom of the print was the simple phrase "To Boldly Go". I remember it like it was yesterday - and I cried too.

I always wanted an electric train set; a friend's dad had the huge set-up in his rec-room: the tunnel, the little trees, the crossing lights. I was in awe. What did I get? The little plastic train set and figure-eight tracks that snapped together. Still, I played with that little plastic train for ages--pushing it around with my finger.

I also collected Matchbox cars; I LOVED those things. But none of my friends would play with them. I eventually passed them on to my nephew.

But, like others have said, I was a girl and girls weren't supposed to like cars and trains. For gifts, I always got Barbie dolls, so I wised up and asked for Barbie's Corvette or Barbie's RV, instead. THOSE got some serious playtime!

I never did get an electric train set. I still admire them in shop windows or Christmas displays but never did get one for myself.

A Star Wars lightsaber. Wanted one SO badly as I was growing up. Damn it!

A pair of Spock/Vulcan ears. Never could find any :(.

I guess I was some mix of fortunate in my folks' means and modest in my wants, because I don't recall badly wanting any particular toy I didn't get after a reasonable wait... apart from a dog, of course. Still waiting on that one. :p

Not really a toy, but I REALLY wanted a Kirk command shirt. I never got one and when I saw the less-than-inspired versions available out there over the years I didn't feel so bad.

Now they have those gorgeous Anovos replicas...and presently I have to watch my dollar. But if and when things get on the upswing again I STILL want one.

There were some board games I really wanted but never got, such as Mall Madness. Thankfully my best friend had parents who spent frivolously, so I got to play it at her house.

What I really wanted but never got was an instrument. I wanted to play clarinet or flute. I borrowed my neighbor's clarinet for music class in school, but the next year she needed it back and my parents wouldn't get me my own, so I had to drop out of music class. I still regret not being able to play any instruments.

One other thing. I wanted a trampoline SOO much. So my parents got one. After I had moved out and gone to college. For my little sisters to play with. I was irritated.

I was the kid who always got what I wanted, and I wasn't greedy. MMM was my thing and I had everything BUT Captain Laser, because he wasn't in scale. Scale was also the reason I was able to get all of the colorform aliens, and my mom got me the Dawn dolls, because the astronauts had to have wives. She got me a 6 tier display tower from a local grocery store that my space station sat on top of which became my base, the biggest playset ever.

She grew up in the 20's and 30's, and I learned much later that she would sneak in while I was at school and relive her childhood.

CCC.
