A Stargate universe REBOOT - how would you do it?

Something occurred to me during the latest SGA episode: They don't take nearly the same amount of equipment and precautions with them that they used to.

Remember the FRED? All sorts of useful junk (like bazookas) on there. Why not have one of those tag along every episode?

And claymores! Is there any good reason not to set up claymores with a killzone around the entry to the Gate on every mission? Maybe try to keep them pointed away from the DHD, but otherwise....c'mon. Button press and it don't matter how many Wraith are clustered there, they'll all be mincemeat.

Yes, it was very silly they ditched the equipment but I also understand why, dramatically. As the series went on, gate travel became only an incidental part of most episodes, a part they wanted to get over and done with and onto the story. Adding things like the FRED, claymore perimeters, etc to improve the realism of gate travel detracted from the drama if it was seen each and every week.

Drop hyperspace and jump drives, and make stargates the only viable means of traveling at faster-than-light speeds.
