Spoilers A Spoilery Image of Protostar Crew? (Possibly from S01E09 A Moral Star, Part 1)

The CBS/Paramount promotion machine did their beginning of the week press release and gave us the official episode description…

ViacomCBS Press Release said:
Episode 109 – A Moral Star, Part 1 (Available to stream Thursday, January 27th)

The crew forgo their dreams of Starfleet to return to Tars Lamora in a no-win scenario.

Written by: S1 Writers Room (Kevin & Dan Hageman, Julie Benson, Shawna Benson, Lisa Schultz Boyd, Nikhil S. Jayaram, Diandra Pendleton-Thompson, Chad Quandt, Aaron J. Waltke)

Directed by: Ben Hibon

Which is the same summary that @Harpsichord pointed out was at TV Fanatic a couple days ago earlier in the thread

They also have a short description up now:

On Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 9, the crew forgo their dreams of Starfleet to return to Tars Lamora in a no-win scenario.

With the official summary text released early from the same source, it would seem to further indicate the uniformed crew image is legitimate. ‪‪I almost wonder if it’s a thumbnail or screengrab from the advance press screener for the episode.

I'm not convinced this is a cadet uniform... it looks like the same uniform Chakotey was wearing. Perhaps a mission-specific uniform?

‪‪I had thought the same thing on first glance, that it was the same as Chakotay’s, and they’re similar, and share many of the same design elements, they don’t look identical to me. The shoulders/arms don’t seem to be the same design.

That being said, ‪‪I would agree with you that they’re most likely mission/Protostar and/or cadet specific, which ‪‪I mentioned earlier on the thread.

Those uniforms are definitely not the same as Chakotay's

Chakotay wore a uniform with a dark area around the shoulders (coming to a point directly below the neck) and a lighter gray on the rest of the uniform.

They’ve already established on other shows that many different uniforms and combadges can and do co-exist based on rank, division, ship or station. As far as I’m concerned, give me the good old days of TNG where the Federation corridor was like a fashion week catwalk!

As cool as the First Contact uniforms were, I thought it was a shame that they pared everything down to such uniformity during the Dominion War. Thankfully, it looks like the peacetime of the early 2380s is showing us a lot more diversity of uniforms and fashion again, as seen on Lower Decks.

The dark panels on Chakotey's shoulders are larger, but that's the only difference I can discern.

Granted, he's a glitchy hologram so it may look very different when we see him in full.

If you look more closely, the arms and upper torso of Chakotay’s uniform are clearly visible from the shots in both Kobayashi and First Con-tact, and they aren’t the same, and while the top portion around the neckline has similar lines, their placement isn’t the same on his frame.

They’re similar, but markedly different.

Cadet version vs actual Fleet version?

I still think that the Protostar is from farther in the future than folks are surmising.

Quite probable.

‪‪Possibly! We also know there are different uniforms active in the same era, most recently seeing multiple styles of uniforms in use on Lower Decks. ‪‪I don’t think Chakotay looks any older than he should a few years after Endgame. Sure, he has a white streak of hair, but ‪‪he doesn’t much older than he did on Voyager to me.

‪‪I think based on everything we’ve been presented with so far that it was launched sometime after Voyager came back in 2378, and sometime before the Picard era in 2399.

‪‪I don’t think the Protostar is from the far future, but ‪‪I could absolutely see Chakotay’s mission not having yet begun by Prodigy’s present of 2383

Unless I’m mistaken, I think Chakotay started to get some salt and pepper in his hair even during the last couple of seasons of VOY.

EDIT: I was right!

Right! He was already salt and pepper, and his Prodigy Holo-recording doesn’t look much older than that at all. ‪‪I think if the Protostar hasn’t already been launched with Chakotay by Prodigy’s 2383 it would happen sometime relatively shortly after.

Definitely. Even if it launched in 2381 or 82 I would buy Chakotay would have a little more white in that spot after 4 years.

Fair enough.

I already surmised Chakotay didn't appear much older vs the last season of VOY... so, I suspect whatever happened to the Protostar (temporal anomaly, etc.) it happened already... by 2381 or 2382... maybe 2383 (but probably before the kids found it... though it would be interesting if the kids returned to the UFP with the Protostar only to learn the ship is about to be launched... but I suspect this probably won't happen as the kids will manage to unlock Janeway's memory and figure out when the ship was launched - otherwise they would risk changing the timeline).

The way holo Janeway structured it was:" the Protostar's mission was to enter the D.Q. and.... ", so, it would have happened shortly after the ship entered the D.Q. (and probably when it was launched on that mission)... so, 2382 or early 2383 (before the kids found the ship) fits.

Why is it that when we get holo recordings, it always looks like cheapo Star Wars style Holo Recordings?

With limited mono-tone color pallets and scan lines?

Why can't we get High Def Holo Recordings with Color, and no Scanlines?

To be fair, this was a ship that’s clearly been through a lot and was found derelict and abandoned in a mine for at least a couple decades. I’d buy the files are corrupted.

Corrupted, sure; Macro Blocking, missing sections of the Holo field.

But it should still be in color, and not have scan lines.
