A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Spoiler-Filled Discussion

Thanks!

I am not sure if I will be purchasing or not. I may wait until other fans have copies in hand and see what they say.

The maps on my Kindle version of Dance were very faint and frustrating.

Two more sets of map snippets, from io9 and Tor.com; the io9 ones include the first hint of Asshai's specific location. I really like the tiny castle drawings on the Westeros map; I may want to buy this set sooner rather than later.

Westeros.org discussion of their third snippet has suggested that the "Kingdoms of the Ifeqevron" may translate from Dothraki as the land of "those who walk" (like White Walkers?) or "the others" (Others?).

New Teaser Poster is out.

GQ Names Blackwater best episode on TV for the year 2011-2012:

Really good interview.

A couple of highlights:

David Benioff (co-creator): We had one really intense conference call with the HBO brass. It was awkward: They said, "So, what are you guys talking about, an extra $500,000?" We said, "Noooo...." "You guys need a million dollars?" "Ummmm...."

Weiss: I think we asked for $2.5 million. We got $2 million-something. That's a lot of money in TV. It was a big ask for them, and they understood it was really important. Our point was that the entire season was pointing toward this confrontation. To do what's normally done on television—the Shakespearean model of talking about battles off-screen—would completely kill the season.

Marshall: In the original script, Stannis Barantheon didn't get any further than the bottom of the ladders [at the wall of King's Landing] and then he sort of disappeared from the script. I thought, "We have to have him do more than that. If he's the polar opposite of King Joffrey, then he should be the first one up the ladder. Let's have a fight with him on the wall.' We choreographed a whole sequence which was never scripted, of Stannis having a sword fight on the wall, chopping a guy's head off, and then basically watching his army's defeat from a bird's-eye position before being dragged off by his own men.

Benioff: There's another battle bigger than this one coming up, but not until the end of season four. So we're preparing our speeches for how we're gonna ask for more money.

So, wildlings at the wall at the end of season four.

I did not recognize the banner being flown by the group on horses near the end. It looked kind of like a red stump on a yellow field. Guesses?

Yeah, looks like they lost the pink. Looks more like a flaming man though with the red and beige/yellow.

Thanks for the input! I did not think of House Bolton. I guess the pink is so ingrained in my mind that it did not even occur to me.

I hear there is a new ASOIAF App for iPhones that has some interesting bio bits. Has anyone checked that out?

Yeah they've really toned back the Bolton pink in the show for some reason. You can actually see a faint embossing of the "flayed man" on Bolton's leather jerkin in some scenes in previous seasons, which IIIRC should have also been in the bright pink with the blood droplets.

You can see a good image of the show's version of the House Bolton sigil here.

Thanks for the image!

I noticed that they have Gendry sporting the beginnings of a beard. I wonder if that is to show that he is getting older; Arya and company have had it rough; or they are trying to make him look like Robert 2.0?
