Well, it was a Universal show, so there's a natural synergy with the classic monsters. But yeah, I guess you could do '50s monster-movie stuff too. Heck, Universal Monsters made it into the '50s with the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Yea, to pull it off now you'd have to make him a wizard or something, maybe working out of Chicago...Kolchak was supposed to be a throwback in the 70s. At one point, Vincenzo describes him as something like a "refugee from a road company production of The Front Page." That's why the character can only really work in that era. At that time he was an anachronism-- in the 21st century, he would be cosplay.
