A show that *does* still hold up? Kolchak: The Night Stalker

Well, it was a Universal show, so there's a natural synergy with the classic monsters. But yeah, I guess you could do '50s monster-movie stuff too. Heck, Universal Monsters made it into the '50s with the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Good point.

It would have been awesome if at the end of The Monster Squad, Kolchak had pulled up in his Mustang and asked the kids, "What'd I miss?"

Kolchak was supposed to be a throwback in the 70s. At one point, Vincenzo describes him as something like a "refugee from a road company production of The Front Page." That's why the character can only really work in that era. At that time he was an anachronism-- in the 21st century, he would be cosplay.

Matt Drudge? I don't know anything about him, but a little Googling does show kind of a 40s-gumshoe look. :rommie:

The complete Kolchak The Night Stalker 1974-75 20 episodes series to be released on blu ray in October 2021, like the two pilot movies have already been.

Trivia: The melody that composer Gil Melle used for the Kolchak main title theme was originally a piece of incidental music he wrote for Gene Roddenberry's The Questor Tapes pilot movie earlier in 1974. It accompanies two scenes set in the robotics lab where Questor is built and later taken back to for repairs.

Yea, to pull it off now you'd have to make him a wizard or something, maybe working out of Chicago...
