A shorter run for Dexter

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Do you think Dexter would benefit from having a shorter run than having its premise stretched to five seasons?

Creatively, I don't think the series has suffered at all. I wouldn't want the show to have ended after just a season or two. Bring on season 5!

The number of threads about how and if "we" would change Dexter specifically, and other shows in general, is just getting silly now Joe.

And no.

Since Dexter is the best show currently on TV I would say no. Every season has been top notch in my opinion and the ending of season 4 has left me needing more more more.

However I do think the 5th season should probably be the last though I guess they could go for 6 though that should be the limit.

They can do five or six seasons just fine.

Just because a poster wants to specialize, so what? ;) I specialize in TV industry news threads. Sometimes there's just one topic that you're motivated to post threads about.

Two episodes short of the end of the fourth season, I don't think a shorter run would have been much of a help. I think the writers have made some mistakes, especially in season three, but I've enjoyed Dexter's arc thus far and a shorter run would only serve to make it less satisfying.

Nah, not really. Some parts of S3 were kind of weak (though I liked the 'dexter has a friend' idea, the way their relationship unfolded felt too convenient and when things hit the fan, jimmy smits wasn't threatening enough a villain)

I will say though if you had a shorter run, something like S2's Bay Harbor Butcher storyline would make a riveting 'final season' but with a less pat 'everything is oookk' ending.

I still love em, let the haters hate, keep em coming Joe! And no, it's on it's last stretch with a 5th and 6th season anyways

If the future seasons are like season 3, I say kill it. I still haven't been able to work my way past the middle of the third season :borg: i might just give up on it and jump right into season 4

I think the next season has the potential to be the most rewarding. We get to see what happens to Dexter once he basically loses almost everything he holds dear, has a ton of emotional baggage to deal with (not only his own but all of the comforting his sister, friends, and comrades will be throwing his way), and dealing with the guilt that it's all his fault for not doing what he should have done in the first place.

I don't think so, I think they've done a great job at keeping the plots fresh. And frankly, I'd like to see more of the show, not less!

Nope, this season needs to be about people knowing about Dexter and then one final season to close up the show.

Agreed with everyone else. The character is such a new concept for television that there's still a ton of depth that can be mined. I can think of few other characters who have grown so much in 4 seasons, and still have so far to go as well. I'd feel cheated if we had only gotten 2-4 seasons. That said I wouldn't push it beyond 6.
