Whatever happened to the Spanish branch of the Picards?
There are people with my last name everywhere. Eight in the phone book alone, last time I checked. But I'm the last of our particular branch capable of spreading the name and bloodline. And that's what I say when I say that there will me no more M__________'s. Picard is essentially saying the same thing: his branch of the Picard family will be extinct when he passes.

At an extended family reunion, over 500 people turned up, and there was this old lady asking the men if they wanted to change their name to "Spencer" because there wasn't enough of them left.

I have a theory about the Picards.
If there's no money, and no personal property, why do the Picards "own" a winery, and why is Rene identical to Young Picard from TNG Rascals (It's the same actor.) ?
I think they are clones, and these clones are the winery as much as the lumber that makes the house, which is a heritage museum more so than a winery.
Like those robots from Chucky Cheese or the Hall of Presidents from Disney World.
The real Picards died out Generations ago.

Voyager seems to have had a serious fight over who Janeway was supposed to be with Jeri Taylor in particular having ideas that clashed with the others.
And notably from "Scorpion," until Janeway decides to ally, the Borg are as close to pure evil as it comes, then Janeway says to form an alliance, Paris is initially puzzled (not really objecting just puzzled) then after the meeting everyone except Chakotay is thinking it can work and has no objections.
Good and evil are a choice.
Free will means you chose one.
The Borg don't have free will.
They stick to their agenda and do what they must to achieve it, no matter the consequences.
No choice.
No free will.
Can't be evil.

Totally.
Janeway had choices, and she made some bad ones. I think that this link provides a pretty good look at them. It's not Janeway-hate, it provides a balanced perspective on several of the events it discusses. Even defends her outright on one of them.

To be fair, Kate Mulgrew specifically requested that Janeway have feminine personality traits, because back in the early 1990s, there was a brand of sexism where women in positions of authority were pressured to act more "masculine" to be in order taken seriously. Obviously, by the 24th Century, society should be past that. And while I'm a more "masculine" gal myself, for the first female lead of a "Star Trek" series, I think it was very important that Janeway be "feminine." (They had B'Elanna to balance that out, for females like me that relate more to "tomboys.")
But of course, the character of Katheryn Janeway was being written by a bunch of men, and...Jeri Taylor. Jeri Taylor, IMO, does not have the best track record at representing our sex. Taylor tended to use all of the most cringy tropes associated with female writers, and that included the "Mary Sue." It is largely in Taylor's episodes that Janeway is put on this ridiculous pedestal, the Janeway/Chakotay romance pounded down viewer's throats, and Chakotay acts like a male from "Twilight," with his creepy obsession over Janeway and amping up the Magical Indian stereotypes. (Both "Resolutions," and TNG's "Sub Rosa"--AKA Dr. Crusher Bangs a Victorian Space Ghost--are Jeri Taylor's doing.)
Note that after Jeri Taylor departed at the end of Season 3, the characters' personalities get more consistent, the J/C undertones are less aggressively forced down the audience's throats, and Janeway's short-comings get more genuine call-outs from her crew.
And catsuits aside, the females representation vastly improved. Seven of Nine's character of course ended up joining the ranks of Data and Spock, as one of the best characters in the franchise. Tom and B'Elanna's romance was far more interesting and less creepy than Neelix/Kes or Jeri Taylor's version of J/C. And we had so many great female relationships, not only with Janeway mentoring Seven, but Seven's friendship with Naomi, and B'Elanna's interactions with Seven and Janeway. I'm now curious if they got more (and better) female writers after Taylor left.
