A Night in Sickbay's Hugo Award nomination

"ANiS" has three and only three redeeming qualities.

1)The chemistry between Bakula and Billingsley.

2)It's not "Precious Cargo."

3)It's not "TATV."

you forgot the biggest one. THE reason Captain X and the rest of his compatriots on this board hate it so ;)

yes, uh, huh, the kiss.

and I'm not gonna expand on that lest I be warned :p

no, I mean the super hot kiss.

;)

you know, the one you and I and a ton of other folk have talked about for years and years on this very forum.

that one.

^You mean the wet dream? Or the Freudian slips? Or maybe the way Archer was an asshat to everyone who tried to help him, and that he cared more about his dog than the welfare of his ship and crew? (all reasons I hate it, by the way)

Right up his own ass... ;)

AND yours, it would seem

There's not enough room up my ass for the both of us.

so it would seem.

give it up, kid. I've lived too long to not enjoy this particular convo with you to the max.

:guffaw:

I liked it when it aired and still like it. It's miles better than Precious Cargo, Bounty, and Vanishing Point just to name three episodes from the same season. It helps show Archer's humanity and is an interesting character study at that.

ialfan and commie, ITA.

also, I've enough of a sense of humor to take this episode the way it was meant to be taken.

The one between Sim and T'Pol in Similitude? Or the one between Trip and T'Pol in Harbinger? Or how about that shower scene in Damage? The cute peck on the cheek in Home? That kiss in Bound? Oh, no, you mean the awkward one Archer dreamed about thanks to a creepy doctor putting the idea in his head that he had "sexual tension" with his first officer.

so it would seem.

give it up, kid. I've lived too long to not enjoy this particular convo with you to the max.

:guffaw:
You so want up my ass, don't you? Come on, admit it. :p

You mean the one that only happened in the mind of a sad, lonely, middle aged guy? Because, you know, that's exactly how ANIS portrayed him... And that's why it sucked. :techman:
:guffaw: *high five* :techman:

now kids... don't start with whorebringer... now THAT's an ep ENT could have done without!

and X, you wish... but I draw the line at toddlers! ;)

There was a topic in this thread a ways back, somewhere.

I think we've had entirely enough references to orifices. Let's get back on topic. That is, if anyone has something more substantive to offer than "It sucks!" "No it doesn't! It's good!" "No it isn't!"...

And indranee, the Multipost and Edit buttons are your friend. No more 3-peat posts, please.

You know, Mach 5, you may have hit on precisely why I liked it. Yes, the middle-aged guy is lonely, but ... so was Kirk (who expounded regularly that he was saddled with a gray lady [Enterprise]), Picard, Janeway, etc. See a pattern? And yet, none of the Star Trek series explored in any real way how that felt. Kirk had a moment of in The Naked Time, but just a moment. Picard dates a fellow crewmember, but without any of the "boy, this is a lonely, thankless job" discussion. Janeway had a boyfriend, and we don't really have an episode (that I've seen) dedicated to how it sucks to be away from him.

Unlike Kirk, Archer isn't a ladies man and yet the guy obviously has emotions/desires. Emotions that he's bottled up. (Funny, how he accuses Vulcans of that and yet is guilty himself -- which is why I like Archer; he's complex.) Good stuff to consider in character development.

What I like -- exploring a man's foibles and flaws. I think that in of itself is sophisticated. And I also like they did so in a mostly funny way.

Except in Archer's case it comes off as really pathetic and creepy, since T'Pol obviously doesn't reciprocate any of the made up "sexual tension" Phlox mentions. Personally I think Phlox just made it up to get Archer's mind off of his dog. :D

Captain X. For sure Phlox wouldn't shut up about it. He kept on and on about Sexual teension until Archer had his wet dreams.

One scene in ANIS that irked me was in the Treadmill scene where T-Pol was running on a treadmill and archer came in. T-Pol speeded up her treadmill and Archer did the same. this went on for three or four times. t-Pol gets off her Treadmill and Archer asks her where she is going and she replies "I Can't keep up with you." Problem with that it was Archer who was trying to keep up with T-Pol not the other way around. Actually, T-Pol coming from Vulcan would be stronger than Archer, have more stanima and would run Archers butt off on a Treadmill. but cannnot have super Archer being beaten in anything can we.

My guess is that some people liked it.

Imagine that.

Poor taste? Different taste. If popularity hewed to some reasonable definition of "good taste" most fantasy and science fiction would have no fan following at all.

you say tomaaahto, I say...

the thing is: some people love TOS, some people HATE it. art is subjective, people. you can't really grade it. though we try.

I could not get past him taking the dog down to the planet. Not that planet. Not when asking those people for help and knowing they are easily insulted. That destroyed any hit of feasibility for the rest of the episode. ANIS was much worse than Precious Cargo because of that. But then, I never had the hatred for Precious Cargo that many here seem to have.

But, I gues I should have expected it to be notice by the Hugo Awards. I used to buy those Hugo Award compilations. Then one day I realized that I do not like most of the stories in those books.

Don't know. The professionals liked it, hence the nomination. Perhaps our taste is more refined. :p

Penguin, that was exactly the joke. She was faster and Archer kept trying to keep pace physically and couldn't, hence why he was out of breath and she wasn't. She stopped because the argument was becoming futile and he was annoying her; Archer couldn't see past his pride and insisted he was in the right. Her comment to him was, "You think you know best, it's pointless for me to 'keep up.'" When she says, "I obviously can't keep up with you" look at Archer's reaction; he's about to lay into her again. Luckily Hoshi interrupts and gets Capt. Cranky Pants.

Her comment is Vulcan for "whatever."

I loved this scene -- probably one of my favorites in the show and possibly the series. She does indeed have the upper hand on him. The audience knows it and so do the characters. Archer's just stubborn. I also like it because they do indeed make the Vulcan faster with more stamina and in the right. I liked the role that T'Pol played (being the side of logic) in the first two seasons. I missed this in seasons 3 and 4.
