A New Enterprise From The Magicam Team

Um, is this OP spam?

I do not know, but it does not cost 3mil to build a studio scale version of any version of the Enterprise.

And needing to raise $3 million? Wasn't the original TMP model sold at auction a few years back for around $250,000? Let's just quadruple the offer for that, buy it back, and party like hell with the other $2 million.

That would be a sight: a room full of wasted Trekkers.

Agreed. Seems very much like those involved are trying to turn this into an opportunity to garner some attention for themselves and make a buck in the process. It doesn't seem like their true interest is in recreating the TMP model "for the fans." Feels pretty slimy to me, in fact.

Regardless, though, I would personally have zero interest in contributing money to duplicating a filming miniature from a film, even a film I love and a ship I think was beautiful. Let's raise $3 million for a good charity or something.

Good luck selling the book! ;)

I think you've got it. Just read the back cover of the book on the link. The book seems to be Olsen's biography going back to his childhood. Doesn't even mention the model.

It came out in 2012. Has anyone read this book?

Seriously though, more power to him. If he's able to raise the funds to make this happen, way to go! I'm not gonna lie, I'd love to see it at every stage of construction because I'm a geek like that. But I know I'll never see it in person so I really have no incentive to donate and the giveaways aren't particularly appealing.

I think if I were him and I was really passionate about it, I'd spend a little extra money up front on the website to make it look more professional, put together some blueprints and have photos on the website, show some BTS photos from the time of TMP if available, do some interviews with the other two guys he mentions from TMP and make those videos available, have some REALLY big prize drawings for donors, put a blog on the website to provide progress updates with photos, share some BTS stories on the website, get quotes from some of the Trek Con directors (or whoever would potentially have the model on display) about their support for this and how excited they would be to have the ship displayed, things like that. Really sell us on the project and your passion for it. And for the love of Pete, a little less head room on the videos please! :P

Has this guy considered getting in touch with the Hollywood Scifi Museum project or the already existing Seattle Scifi Museum? If this model can live in a pre-existing venue rather than building its own from the ground-up, the crowdfunding goal can drop to something a lot more reasonable than 3 million. Food for thought.

I read it. Not a great book but it was ok if you want to know about his life (Joni Mitchell was hitting on him at a party and he blew her off, etc.).

Get a 3D printer, some CAD programs and a couple of guys to put all the various parts together and your expenses drop considerably. You can get a decent 3D printer from $1000 to $3000 or $5000 depending size and how big you want each part to end up as.

For $3 Million, I'd expect the damn model to float in the air and achieve at least Warp 1.

No money from me.

$3M does seem too much, but I think the Star Trek world would be better with that happening than without.

Best luck.

It might be slightly justifiable if the model was going to be used in.... something... like maybe another movie, etc. but that won't be happening.

But $3 million for a model that, what.... would be displayed somewhere or something people could look at?

They could put $3 million into a startup for a new TV series or movie, or something more worthwhile than a static model of a model that was already made for a movie that isn't being used anymore.

Yeah, I just don't understand the motivation here. Other than to make a quick buck and get 15 minutes of fame, of course.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore the original TMP Enterprise model. I think it's, by far, the most beautiful of the Enterprises and a true work of art. But I don't get the point of raising millions of dollars to recreate it.

First, the original still exists. Yes, a private collector bought it, but it still exists, and I'm willing to bet that for the right price -- probably a lot less than $3 million -- the owner could be persuaded to either sell it or put it on display. Then fans could see the real thing, and not a recreation.

Second, as has already been pointed out, this is going to be used for what? Display at Star Trek conventions? As good as the workmanship might end up being, it's ultimately just a recreation, like a million other recreations, so what's the point? Why would I want to pay money to help build it, and then pay money to go see it, all for a model that was never actually used in Trek?

Makes no sense to me.

Also it's going to get wear and tear from shipping to various conventions. Are they going to need to raise $X after each trip to constantly repair and keep the ship in decent shape?

A Star Trek museum sure would be awesome. Or a Star Trek wing of a Science Fiction museum. That might make the recreation worthwhile, hefty price tag aside (although it's kind of impossible to set that aside).

Hey...maybe he's going to surprise us? Perhaps most of the $3 million will go into a special fund and the interest used every year to provide the "Starfleet Academy Scholarship" to lucky Trekkie kids? Help the next generation of Trekkies to reach for the stars through higher education?

...No? Ah well.

Paul Olsen who was part of the MAGICAM team that built the ENTERPRISE for ST:TMP is spearheading a project to build a second model for all fans to enjoy. Does this excite you? He can be found at [LINK REMOVED] :)

Adm Nogura,I'm giving you a friendly, but soliciting isn't cool here. Thanks.

I wish I had the money to send them

I wonder if they could sell low density Styrofoam replicas--if they still have the molds...

Wow......Just wow.

First like someone said the original sold for around a quarter mil and I'm willing to bet from a purely material standpoint it isn't even worth that much they probably got 50,000-75,000 extra just by it being the model that was used in the films. In fact I'm betting if you went to ILM today and said build me a model like TMP, with all the advances in design, manufacturing, lighting, electronics since 1979 it wouldn't even cost $250,000 for a brand spanking new one, let alone 3 mil.

Second, like someone also pointed out, QMX is offering a three foot replica that, from what I've seen, looks like with a few alterations, if it was filmed by a good sfx crew who knew how to light and film a model correctly could pass for a ship that would look as good on TV as the Enterprise-D did on TNG, and they're selling it for only 6 grand.

Third you do realize that high end sports cars that actually have engines, brakes, transmissions, all the latest electronic features and can do almost 200 mph cost way less than 3 milion to build

Well I'll tell you guys what. Send me 3 million, I'll find the guy who owns the original offer him up to 1.5 million and then we'll go to vegas and spend the remaining money on gambling and strippers.

3 million..........:guffaw: Good Lord
