"A Matter of Honor": Admiral Mendon?

Good afternoon.

Do you believe that badass Benzite eventually rose through the ranks and attained Admiralty?

Pretty sure the Benzite homeworld was invaded by the Borg just before the battle of Wolf 359 and their main computer system was assimilated, which given the nature of their computer network reliance, essentially renedered the species immediately extinct even though the planet was soon abandoned by the Borg in their attempt to reach the Sol system.

I'm not sure where you're getting that from, but Benzar, the Bnzite homeworld was invaded by the Dominion, but later freed by the Romulans. Odo was suspicious that the Romulans would relinquish control of Benzar. However, the star charts in Nemesis do indicate it was returned to the Federation, though no confirmation of this was ever given.

It remains a very frustrating fact that we don't really know what happened to the planets that were conquered by the Dominion both during the war and their occupation, and after they were liberated again.
As much as I understand that there is no good room to explore that in detail in the current Trek Shows (it would probably need one that is focused on the aftermath of the Dominion War, and I'm not sure that would be a good idea, considering how the Dominion War has been explored to exhaustion on DS9) I would like to know more. For things like that, and Bajor *finally* joining the Federation, I wished there had been one more season of DS9, dealing with the aftermath of the war.

Seriously speaking, however, I wonder just how much Benzite starship procedure (i.e., fully investigating a problem and then devising a solution before informing a superior officer) is compatible with typical Starfleet operations. To what extent would an aspirant Benzite need to modify that behavior if they wish to advance?

That's a really good point. Judging by Lower Decks Bajor was still not in the Federation as of 2381, 6 years after "What We Leave Behind." I think Lower Decks would be where we would find out about post-Dominion War for some planets, though arguably it's not the best place for it.

I'm also interested in how a fully Benzite ship operates. If everyone just goes off on devising a solution before informing a superior officer, does no one work together? Do multiple Benzites work independently and perhaps at cross purposes?

This reminds me a bit of a pro-tip I got from my manager once upon a time...he suggested that before I escalate a problem to him I should try to have at least one proposed solution as well. It's good advice in that it teaches you to be proactive and think a problem through and all, but it sounds as though the Benzites might take it to an extreme.

Funny, but I'm reading "Rogue Saucer" and Mendon just showed up with the titular prototype saucer section to deliver to Picard. I think he got to LT.
As to the question, considering there's probably something in the water at Starfleet HQ that keeps producing badmirals, I kinda hope not. Maybe he got to Commander and then retired to open up a bowling alley.

Here we are at an interesting question in general; while the aliens on Star Trek tend to be very human by default, we also have some that wor somewhat differently (the Vulcans might be another good example)
How much do any of those modify their behaviours to join, and advance in, Starfleet?

Yeah, LD is a more lighthearted, comedy focused show. I don't think it's the right place to focus on the aftermath of the Dominion War.
Of course what we can infer from LD is that Starfleet, and the Federation as a whole, have pretty much reverted to their pre-war state and mindset and it seems to have been the destruction of Mars and the various crisises surrounding the destruction of the Romulan Empire that created the situation we saw in PIC

Did you have the Bynars in mind?

Yes, sorry got my Bees mixed up. Benzites, Bynars, Bolians all those blue people, well sorta blend together. Was telling tales out of school anyways.

The Bynars are pink/purple :-P

But yeah, I always thought it was weird how many important/semi-important species introduced in TNG started with B: Bynzites, Bolians, Betazoids, Borg, Bajorans
