Where to start?
First of all, it's MSNBC, so considering that network has about 10 viewers total, I'm not surprised.
Second of all, he doesn't say "James Siberius Kirk", he says "My name is JamesssStiberiusKirk" and slurrs it all together...does anyone really think that they would miss something like Kirk's middle name?? Give these guys some credit...they may have changed some things that rubs a number of Trek fans the wrong way, but there's no conspiracy to enrage the fanboys by purposely getting Kirk's middle name wrong...paranoid...
Third, this article defends Shatner when he isn't under attack...it states that Shatner is often accused of not being able to act..well of course he can act...everybody can act, it's just to what degree...Shatner is definitely more talented than he is given credit for...his particular Shatnerian delivery is a trademark...he actually stated in an interview for BIO channel that he developed this way of speaking during his days on stage...he's just a hammy actor, nothing wrong with that, he's got chops. and his Kirk is unforgettable, but plleeeeeaaasee....
Fourth, nobody is trying to replace William Shatner or diminish his portrayal of Captain Kirk...but the point is, it was just that..a portrayal...as much as Shatner has become associated with the character, he does not own it...Jack Nicholson was the Joker as far as I was concerned, from the day I saw Batman at age five until I saw the Dark Knight..now, I can appreciate both Ledger and Nicholson's performances, and draw my own conclusions as to which was superior, but the point is that there is room for both
Chris Pine will do just fine as Captain James T. Kirk, and he will do Shatner proud ...hopefully, Star Trek will breathe new life into the franchise, and we will see Trek stories with many generations of actors portraying these iconic characters for years to come..
