A jab at Berman era Trek in the new movie?

...Right now, most everyone on this board is pretty chill. Which we can all thank the Sombreroes for.

I refuse to accept the sombreros until someone explains to me how they work.
The simple act of donning the Wide-Brimmed Mexican Headwear Item partially blocks energetic photons from the local stellar furnace, allowing the wearer to operate in moderately high temperature environments with greater ease.

The wide brim also helps to minimize glare - especially when utilized in conjunction with ocular shading eyeglasses. The Cool And Froody factor rises exponentially at this point, causing enhanced hormone and pheromone production in anyone within viewing distance. Scientifically Accurate proof

You put it on your head. And it amplifies your cool factor.
Dammit. Mine took longer to type....

I feel the need to mention once again that I have nothing but deep respect and gratitude for mr Berman for giving me the shows I grew up on, the shows I still love. Roddenberry was the creator but i really do not think he would have approved DS9 which to me is one of the greatest TV shows ever. Now on the other hand- having never watched any of Abrams previous shows I have absolutely no idea what to expect but I am keeping an open mind and hopefully I will be pleasantly suporised as I was with Batman Begins and Dark Knight.

Pfft. Berman-bashing.

Isn't Roddenberry-bashing supposed to be the latest thing? I mean, Abrams-bashing is starting to fizzle a bit, so-

They dont have technobabble in bsg a lot of british/us/french military jargon but it's cool when people say stuff like that.

somebody catch the glaring mistake in the reporting please ;)

I stopped reading when I got to this bit:

“My name is James Siberius Kirk.” Those are the first words uttered in the revamped “Star Trek” trailer by a pre-teen version of the captain-to-be. Of course, fans know there’s a “T” in James T. Kirk and it stands for “Tiberius.” It’s a small mistake in the greater scheme of things, perhaps the result of a misread line or even a pronounced lisp.

The kid clearly says Tiberius.

This is NOT reporting. It is some occasional contributor to msnbc.com.
God, wish I hadn't read those MSNBC reviews. They suck big time. The writer is a Complete (not partial) Wanker.
I agree.

Are you sure Ree Hines is not a CRA-based character? This article was probably written from a basement in the home of the author's parents. :alienblush: The writer needs to take off their Shatner-colored glasses long enough to enjoy the movie.

yeah, well. it was pathetic. whatever it was... reporting... wanking... whatever.
A quick Google search for "Ree Hines" + "MSNBC" turns up all sorts of gossipy showbiz trash -- she(?)'ll apparently write about almost anything, which is probably how one becomes a "frequent contributor" to MSNBC.

This was another stunning example of... something, from the recent article:

What could Pine possibly bring to the character to live up to the legend? Not to pre-pan Pine’s performance, but barring Halloween, it’s hard to imagine anyone else living up to Kirk’s uniform. If it’s not on Shatner, it’s just a costume. The suit doesn’t make the man. Fans know that. Pine knows that.

“Shatner will forever be James T. Kirk,” the new stand-in recently admitted. “There's something set in stone about that. That actually takes pressure off me. I'm going my own way. My name is not William Shatner.”

Shatner is Kirk. Pine’s not Shatner. Simple syllogistic logic says Pine can’t be Kirk. There’s only one Captain Kirk.
You can almost hear the smug "HA! Gotcha!"

Actually, you're making something up to please yourself. There's a specific story reason that Kirk won't let Scotty explain what happened; and it is all explained (with minimal techonobabble) in an earlier scene.

Well, while I apologize for taking it out of context, you realize that, unlike most Trekkies, I'm spoiler free when it comes to this movie. So I had no way to know about it. I just thought it was amusing. And context or not, this movie appears to be a breath of fresh air considering what we've had to endure in recent years.

Where to start?

First of all, it's MSNBC, so considering that network has about 10 viewers total, I'm not surprised.

Second of all, he doesn't say "James Siberius Kirk", he says "My name is JamesssStiberiusKirk" and slurrs it all together...does anyone really think that they would miss something like Kirk's middle name?? Give these guys some credit...they may have changed some things that rubs a number of Trek fans the wrong way, but there's no conspiracy to enrage the fanboys by purposely getting Kirk's middle name wrong...paranoid...

Third, this article defends Shatner when he isn't under attack...it states that Shatner is often accused of not being able to act..well of course he can act...everybody can act, it's just to what degree...Shatner is definitely more talented than he is given credit for...his particular Shatnerian delivery is a trademark...he actually stated in an interview for BIO channel that he developed this way of speaking during his days on stage...he's just a hammy actor, nothing wrong with that, he's got chops. and his Kirk is unforgettable, but plleeeeeaaasee....

Fourth, nobody is trying to replace William Shatner or diminish his portrayal of Captain Kirk...but the point is, it was just that..a portrayal...as much as Shatner has become associated with the character, he does not own it...Jack Nicholson was the Joker as far as I was concerned, from the day I saw Batman at age five until I saw the Dark Knight..now, I can appreciate both Ledger and Nicholson's performances, and draw my own conclusions as to which was superior, but the point is that there is room for both

Chris Pine will do just fine as Captain James T. Kirk, and he will do Shatner proud ...hopefully, Star Trek will breathe new life into the franchise, and we will see Trek stories with many generations of actors portraying these iconic characters for years to come..

But it sounds like the kid is speaking with a lisp - enough that a group of us have been doing the impression of that since the trailer came out,

"My name is Jamesth Thiberiusth Kirk!"

Uggh, the kid's pronunciation is terrible.

The last time I was arrested after diving out of a car while driving off it of a cliff, I was sure to pronounce my name properly for the officer.

This sort of thing is just plain sloppy. Shatner would never have made that mistake.

Actually the way the young Kirk takes his foot off the clutch and drives it off a cliff is supposed to be symbolic of how B&B drove the franchise off a cliff with all that techno babble and women in tight clothes and stuff.

Pine calling the security guard "cupcake" is another jab. He is alluding to the fact that during the Berman era all we ever saw was the top of the cupcake with the frosting, but underneath that paper there was nothing there but cake.

Casting Zoe Soldana as new Uhura is also a jab at the fact that Uhura was never mentioned in Modern Trek at all.

Simply calling the new film Star Trek is also a jab at Berman and his use of colons in his series and films.

I used my colon to come up with these in fact.
