A jab at Berman era Trek in the new movie?

I saw this in a "who's who in Trek" commercial on Nickelodeon. The scene looked like it was on the bridge. Some officer asked Kirk and Scott how they managed to teleport onto the bridge. Scotty was about to explain it to him, but Kirk immediately stopped him, which made me laugh because I knew that if this was Berman/Braga Trek, he would have gone into some technobabbly explanation involving realigning the Hiesenberg compenators with the flux capacitor or some such crap. That scene alone gives me more confidence in the movie and shows that JJ's crew, if that was intentional, has ALL the fans' best interest in mind. Anyway, My son and I are there Friday!

Actually, you're making something up to please yourself. There's a specific story reason that Kirk won't let Scotty explain what happened; and it is all explained (with minimal techonobabble) in an earlier scene.

Orci in particular is a TNG-era Trek fan. If he has any level of discomfort whatever with the way modern Trek handled tech dialogue he's declined to mention it. Internet fans fuss a lot more about these things than anyone involved does.

Oh, hey, you're slamming Rick Berman. Guess that means you're one of the cool guys around here. I can just picture you now, in your jeans, black leather jacket and slicked back hair which says to the world that you're something else.

Slamming Berman is outdated and fandom needs to let it go. He's not around to ruin your precious Star Trek anymore. Never again are you going to worry about hearing about the phase variant of the coil emmiters being at 47% or whatnot. It's all in the past, but a distant memory. You're only inflicting the "pain" on yourself by bringing it up so often.

Now, I go to get back to dissing Abrams and his idiotic USS Kelvin with its single nacelle and registry with a leading zero which so totally rapes my childhood.

You don't suppose that zero is itself an homage to Internet fandom?

Anyway, it's the whole of modern Trek (1987-2005) that's typified by the overuse of "technobabble." It's just that a lot of fans aren't actually clear on what part of that era and to what degree Berman and/or Braga were managing the whole thing (Braga's major managerial influence would in fact only be from mid-to-late "Voyager" onward), so they use "Berman/Braga" as synonymous with "modern Trek." Unless, of course, they want to say something good about DS9, in which case they assume that the Killer Bees were somewhere drugged and hogtied when the decision in question was made.

You know, I would like some sort of official explanation from Abrams and or cohorts regarding the zero. I forgot to submit it to the Ask Abrams thing on Memory Alpha however.

I can do without the technobabble. I like it, but it's not needed.
If the film succeeds without technobabble, we may see a real continuing series on the horizon. A lot of people (not super nerds like me) don't have the patience to sit through that sort of bullshit.

As much as I loathe even acknowledging the existence of "Enterprise", it seems that the "Akiraprise" registry of NX-01, rather than NX-1, pretty much established a canon precedent for registry numbers beginning with a zero.

Yes, truly, the success or failure of the film will hinge entirely on the existence of the aforementioned '0'.

Breath deeply, relax, and remind yourself... ultimately, it's just a movie. The economy's still faltering, we're still on the cusp of a potential viral pandemic, Pakistan may still fall to the Taliban along with their nuclear stockpile... so try and put the Kelvin's prefix in perspective. ;)

At this point, the only discussion about the Kelvin's prefix code is tongue-in-cheek, much like proclaimations of "my childhood just got raped" and comparing things from the new movie to an Apple Store (I.E.: "The Bridge looks like an Apple Store." "The phasers look like an Apple Store." "Spock's stupid hair cut looks like an Apple Store!")

Right now, most everyone on this board is pretty chill. Which we can all thank the Sombreroes for.

Ummm...I am not sure what planet you and the other person who are dissing the OP are on...but he is right on target. So go back to dissing JJ for raping your childhood, or however you call it; but to deny the perception that technobabble was a Berman/Braga issue is pretty much pissing in the wind since most of modern TREK actors seem to agree that it was bogging down the story telling, and attribute it to them. Oh, I know that Robert Beltran isn't really liked around here. But he has talked about it, as did Nana Visitor when I saw her the few times I did at post-Ds9 conventions...and, more importantly, GOD him self, SHATNER, has on more than one occaision said it was what seperated his show from the modern shows..."Scotty didn't need to explain how the engines did this or that..they just did it"

Rob

God, wish I hadn't read those MSNBC reviews. They suck big time. The writer is a Complete (not partial) Wanker.

Ah! Bless the Sombreros! The artifacts of peace!

I figure it has to have to do with the Spatial Dimension Support Radii Magnifiers or the Brim Dispersal Compensators. Perhaps the Crown-Cranial Interface Surface with its microporous fibers stimulate the serenity nodes of the humanoid brain? Only with in depth study and experimentation will we be able to know for sure.

I like the technobabble! It makes things sound all...science-fictiony!!:)
