Spoilers A big hint about the finale/season 3 has dropped...

Sounds like the writers are too lazy to try and write a show that fits in the 23rd century so have switched it to the 28th century for a easy ride.

I don't get it. People are unhappy with the DSC Klingons, so they give them hair to make them look more like TNG klingons. People are unhappy with the prequel status of DSC, wanting a return to the post-Nemesis era of Trek, so DSC moves to the 28th century and people are unhappy?
I don't think many people had a problem with Discovery being a prequel per se, merely with them being quite bad at it. Introducing setting changing super tech and galaxy shattering events in a prequel are not great ideas. However, in this season they're done many cool (mostly standaloneish) episodes which are either completely unproblematic in the prequel context, or use the prequel status ingeniously. And I'd prefer if they'd keep doing that. It is perfectly doable.

For myself, I see this as the showrunners conceding that they don't have the ability of making the show work in the 23rd century setting. Will we have the crew attempt to find a way home as the central theme of the series and being constantly foiled in their attempts? I have never seen it work well. Examples: Space: 1999, Voyager, Stargate: Universe.

Actually the first season of Space 1999 was excellent then the show was handed over to Freiberger. Stargate Universe was similarly excellent but at that time Scifi was more interested in being the Wrestling Channel. But yeah, Voyager was not good, but that wasn't because of the central theme. Farscape also had that as a central theme, as for much of the series John Chricton was trying to get home. Both BSGs also had that as a central theme as well.

What I suspect is that Fuller had a series of anthology seasons in mind. A Klingon War, Christopher PIke, far Future Trek etc. However, TPTB instead decided to string them along with the same crew. Deciding the show doesn't somehow work because they might be doing time jump is IMHO, wishful thinking by people who already dislike the who and are searching for validation.

My own comments last year, on August 29th, 2018, before I knew anything about Season 2 or what "Calypso" was about...

Cutting and Pasting:

While we're on the subject of how DSC behaves as a prequel, I'm still of the mind that it won't stay a prequel. The spore drive already jumped nine months into the future. I equate that to Back to the Future's sending Einstein one minute into the future. The test before the real thing.

I think Discovery is "lost" and ends up at the turn of the 25th Century. That gets rid of the Spore Drive in the 23rd Century because between the disappearance and the crap that went on the first season, they'll write it off as a failure. And it'll be something the Klingons can't duplicate for whatever technobabble reason.

So, with DSC ending up around 2399/2400, you can have crossovers with Picard. If they want to go back to the 23rd Century, then that's what Pike is for. If they go that route.

Only my speculation about how I think things will ultimately play out.

I was wrong about them going to the timeframe of the Picard Series but, otherwise, it looks like I might be on the right track.

I had forgotten Farscape and the two BSGs.

The issue, as I see it, is that the solution to the problem, how to get out of the situation you find yourself in, requires a great deal of creativity and imagination from the showrunners and their teams. Unfortunately, in many cases, they fall short, resorting to what has come before and failing at expanding and exploring the setting with elements that are unique to it and demonstrating fully how the characters cope with and adapt to an alien environment.

I am extremly skeptical about the Discovery showrunners and their teams. They have, for me, not presented a convincing case that they are even capable of this.

Yet it still leaves the Spore Drive as a huge technology in the 23rd century if the Discovery is simply lost in time. As well as the Red Angel suit.

Feels like they are going to have to hit some kind of complete reset button on the first two seasons. It would probably require a reset going much farther back than the first two seasons. Because the research for both would likely be years in the making.

In some respects I wish Discovery was "left alone". DSC season one Klingons are my favorite take outside of TOS, and I liked some of the broad strokes and tones of DSC season 1. Pike and some of the plots are a great take on Discovery but I don't like the show tripping over itself to "maintain canon". It can be a nice nod sometimes, but others, it's painfully obvious they're applying a patch to keep diehard fans happy ("Oh, Good to see the Klingons growing their hair back.")

Frankly I don't mind at all seeing more stories told contemporary to TOS. This era of trek history is woefully unexplored, and I'd rather see more of that than anything from the TNG era.
Completely agree. No matter what, DSC cannot win.

Starfleet already scrapped the idea of using the Drive at the end of Season 1, until they can find a way to use it without violating the law. Maybe they never find out how, or the project is just shelved and forgotten. Just like all the other countless tech over the last 50 years of stories.

And they wouldn't use it in emergency? To save Voyager, for example? And no one else in the entire multiverse ever develops this technology? Sorry, this is not a sufficient explanation at all. Same with the Red Suit, with which there are even less issues.

Don't know.

I guess we'll find out :techman:
