A ‘Star Wars’ Movie Directed by a Woman Is ‘Absolutely’ Happening, Vows Kathleen Kennedy

I don't really see a need to reboot, if they want to start fresh they can just do either a bigger jump forward or jump back.
Well we know the next Star Wars movie is going to be directed by Taika Waititi so the wait for a female director it seems is on hold. Granted they are doing the right thing here. Wanting to have a female director makes sense and is fair but also you don't turn down a chance to work with A-listers like Waititi. I bet it's just time before they go after Patti Jenkins yet again. She already once almost worked for Disney seeing as how she was suppose to have done Thor 2. Also keep a eye out for Cate Shortland if that Black Widow movie is as awesome as it looks.

Deborah Chow has already directed two episodes of The Mandalorian, and will be the only director for the Obi-Wan series, so the next logical step after that would be to give her a movie.
We've already gotten Taika Waititi going from The Mandalorian to a movie, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot more of that as the different Star Wars and Marvel series go on.

I think Chow will also get one as well but she might have to wait until Filoni gets his. I also think we will see Faverau also direct. It could go Waititi Faverau, Filoni and Chow. While waiting you can then have Filoni and Chow direct some smaller movies for experience until their turn up.

They could treat the shows as the Minor League. Getting new directors used to the tone and aesthetic of Star Wars, while still giving them enough freedom to try new things. It also helps expand the fanbase's idea of what Star Wars is and we can get some variation in the shows and films.

I like that idea as long as they aren't sticklers to it. I still think you want to open the door up to bring in the big name director from time to time who is going to do something unique. Maybe Tarantino now that he isn't going to do Star Trek could maybe be inspired to do a Star Wars. I would love to see Speilberg try and make one. I mean I can't think of a more perfect person to do SW than Speilberg.

No love for Bryce Dallas Howard?

The only reason I singled out Chow is because she has more experience as a director.

I think that pretty much what they're doing. In the case of Dave Filloni it's been clear for a while that they've been grooming him for the big leagues and 'The Mandalorian' was a way to pair him up with a veteran Director to both help him learn live action direction and as a safety net in case he can't hack it.
Keep an eye out for Sam Witwer being given a crack at behind the camera at some point too; either in the writer's room or in the director's chair.

Aside from cultivating new directing talent, it also seems like a good way to attract some big name guest directors who might not want to commit to a movie (and if they did, they'd probably want more creative control than LF is willing to give), but a few episodes of a high profile streaming show on a state of the art sound stage? Well that might sound like a fun and relatively quick project! I honestly wouldn't be shocked if this is what finally persuades Spielberg to direct a Star War...

As for Chow; honestly I rather suspect the the trajectory the mouse has in mind for her would be to give her a Marvel movie before a Star Wars one opens up.

Maybe but I don't think she has made a big impact on people just yet. Plus you got a line forming and if they work out you might want them to come back and direct a 2nd or more movie as well. Also if they do another trilogy no way do they do it as unprepared as they did the final Skywalker one. Not again.

I think it's a given at this point that more or less *every* project has had it's schedule pushed back a year.

I'm fine with it. Plenty of stuff to watch I have never watched before. Also gives them more time to work on the scripts.

A friend of a friend knows someone who's sister's boyfriend's brother works with someone married to someone who's brother's girlfriend works at Disney.
I went to Disneyland once. I guess that means I know things too!
