9 Years Ago Today...

the Dagman

I just remembered what today is the anniversary of. Nine years ago today was the day I was struck by lightning! And I believe the only reason I am alive today is because of my lucky belt buckle and a metal belt-mounted retractable key chain I was wearing.

Back on September 24, 2001, less than two weeks after the destruction of the World Trade Center, there was an incredible lightning storm here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The sky was shooting lightning like it was a Tesla coil. It had been going on for a few hours by the time I got off work that night. And when I got home, the power was out and the entire apartment complex was dark.

So I got into my apartment and was sitting there in the dark wondering what I was going to do until the power came back on. As I sat there I smelled something that made me realize I had forgotten to dump the trash the night before. So I decided to take the trash out to the dumpster without thinking about it much more. I didn't think about needing to keep safe as I really didn't mind and liked lightning storms up to that point in my life.

So I closed up the bag of garbage and ran out into the storm to the dumpster across the driveway in front of my apartment. And as I turned around to go back inside, the bolt with my name on it hit me. Looking back, I see that whole area was like one big lightning attraction. Cars on either side of the chain fence surrounding the dumpster. Across from a carport made entirely of metal. All like a big lightning rod.

As I got hit, time slowed down for me. Seconds seemed like minutes. It looked like there was a flash on the car next to me a split second before I was hit. And I believe the bolt had first hit that car and then arced off to me. I believe the bolt then went to either the belt buckle or the exposed key chain and then out the other, localizing the hit to the right side of my abdominal area. Because I suddenly had an abdominal cramp so bad it felt like all the muscles there were suddenly tied into knots. The pain was so bad, I doubled over and fell to my knees. But the pain was so bad, at least I knew I was still alive.

As I was writhing in agony there on my hands and knees and the realization of what just happened set in, my survival instinct started to kick in. I knew then I was in what was basically a death-trap. I had to get to shelter before I got hit again, as I might not be lucky enough to survive a second hit. So I overcame the pain and got to my feet and staggered back to my apartment. And once inside I started to massage the cramps out of my right side.

Then it started to really hit me what had just happened. And I became charged with exuberance that I had survived what would normally kill a person. I had to tell someone. But my phone was dead, the phone lines having also been hit. But I had my work supplied cell phone and it still worked. I called my folks, no answer. My sister, no answer. I knew none of my friends were home already. So I called back to work where my boss still was and told him. And he didn't believe me, as he had just seen me not twenty minutes earlier and couldn't comprehend it happening so quickly thereafter.

About fifteen minutes later, my power came back on. And I realized I wasn't the only victim of the lightning that night. As it appeared that my apartment had taken a direct hit. I had surge protection on my electronics, but the shot that had taken out my phones also went down my DSL line, through the modem, and into the built-in ethernet port of my computer. And worse, my old G3 Mac tower also had a built-in AV daughtercard that was connected via the RCA plugs to my television set which the bolt also arced through and fried. I had lost my computer, television, phones, answering machine and microwave all from that storm. A couple of thousand dollars worth of damage.

It was a very good thing that I had renters' insurance, as they replaced everything aside from my $250 deductable. You never know when you might need it. And I still wear that same belt buckle, the same one I have worn since I was twelve years old. And yes, it does look a bit charred.

That's fantastic. Did you go to the hospital afterward, to make sure everything was okay? Have you had any health issues since then, or noticed any behavioral changes?

It is great that you came out of that one alright. Your story is definitely an interesting read. There is something oddly encouraging about surviving something potentially terrible which helps put things in perspective.

I never got hit by lightning, but I did get zapped by the main wires that fed into the house from the power line above when I was in my early teens or so. I was on a ladder fiddling around right up next to them, and got a light zap. Ironically, I was up there in the first place because my mother had ordered me to go up there and hang stuff from the eves for her. After the zap, I distinctly remember refusing to go back up and finish the job. From that day on, I always gave electric wires plenty of distance.

Or better yet, have you developed any strange unexplainable super powers???

I have noticed an increase in my olfactory sensitivity. I notice scents that no one else does. And I can identify them too. Like when I was riding in a car recently and noticed the distinct smell of antifreeze coming from ahead of us. As we approached a red light I had traced it to the car next to us at the light. I called over to the driver to say I thought he had a coolant leak and he said he knew, that his water pump had just started to slightly leak. I was about a half a block away from him when I first smelled it. Be it antifreeze, transmission fluid, oil (clean and/or burnt), tobacco, alcohol, burning wood... I can track it all if it is close enough and I have smelled it before.

I have prevented many fires. I even saved that apartment complex from burning down when I caught some kids setting fire to some dry trees and a mound of dried leaves just outside of it. I smelled the burning leaves inside my apartment with my windows closed and went to investigate. I chased them off before they could finish, then called 911 for the fire department and then apartment security to tell them along with a description of the kids and where they were headed. They caught them less than 15 minutes later. And the FD around the block got there quick and doused the leaves before the fire could spread further. My neighbor even called me a hero. Had I not done what I did, all of our homes would have been lost.

But I don't believe it was caused by the lightning, as I had the ability before the bolt and have always considered myself a mutant. My body is proportioned much like that of Hank McCoy before he went all blue and furry and I was taller and stronger than anyone in my family before me. Except for a similarly mutated uncle and cousin I haven't seen since my pre-teens. And even recently when I was at the doctor for an ear problem, he noticed how I had many abnormalities and did not respond to treatments the way he had anticipated. I said to him "So, you're telling me I am a mutant." And he replied "mmmm... yeah." So maybe one of my mutant abilities is electrical energy resistance.

And my youngest nephew is an even bigger mutant than me. He got a growth spurt at the onset of puberty. He went from being 5'5" at age 14.5 to being 6'8" before he hit 16! The long pants he wore in one year became shorts for him the next, almost without any alterations! He hasn't told me if he has any increased senses like me. But he gets a kick out of what I call him, "My Favorite Mutant". Because he knows that I know I am one too.

So maybe one of my mutant abilities is electrical energy resistance.

I have to say, this thread proved to be WAY more entertaining than yet another of the "it's my anniversary of joining TBBS - woohoo" threads that I expected it to be! :techman:

There was a guy on that show that Stan Lee does for History Channel that has the power to resist powerful electrical charges (or maybe it's to not resist them :rommie:), so that super-power is within the realm of possibility.

You're lucky, though. There have been people who have been struck by lightning, or otherwise zapped by electricity, who have undergone negative (pardon the expression) personality changes.

Amazing. You are a fortunate and blessed person!

Congratulations - we're all glad you made it! I never realized how many people are struck by lightning every year. I was very surprised to learn many people survive it. Great that you are one of them!

I'm glad to about the renter's insurance thing and how that worked out. Most people think it's expensive but it costs a lot less than replacing all your stuff out of pocket.

Actually, it had more to do with luck I think. As I was usually on my feet all day at work, I typically wore rubber-soled walking shoes. That and the two metallic objects on my belt managed to keep the zap localized to the right side of my abdomen, avoiding my vital organs. Aside from not getting hit at all by staying inside, I was about as well protected as an average person could be. Still, I wouldn't want to do it again.

Holy CATS!

Thankfully you were not permanently harmed.

I have been bit by our electric fence a few times, that'll light you up!
