Is it explained in the episode how three nuclear weapons could destroy the moon. I mean, like, humans have nuked the Earth many times over and the Earth is still here.

Three nuclear bombs, no. One hundred nuclear bombs all going off at the same time and place? It'd put a nice-sized dent in the moon, to say the very least. Or maybe propel it out of orbit and out into the reaches of deep uncharted space (and woe to any lunar base stationed there)...

So was the whole "Tell her she's special" thing just a Britishism or what. Seems to me that people telling Courtney that she's a special snowflake is part of the reason she's such an annoying brat.

So knowing the Moon was an egg makes the whole "it suddenly appeared and scared the Silurians into hibernation" thing seem much more reasonable. Having it placed there intentionally makes more sense than it was just a rogue planetoid captured by the Earth.

This has to be the most divisive season of nuWho, at least on this forum. Seven episodes in and every episode has its fair share of lovers and haters.

Was I the only one who heard the Doctor clearly say there were "about a hundred nuclear bombs" on that shuttle?

Seemed rather the opposite to me. And while I don't think Courtney was too bovvered (to reference a certain other bratty schoolgirl/future Companion) by what other ordinary people thought of her (except rather pointedly of 'Miss'), Clara had a point that getting dissed by the likes of the Doctor (esp. this Doctor) could have some adverse effects on one's self-esteem.

Personally I think Courtney made that complaint to her just to manipulate her way into another TARDIS trip, and only really took the Doctor's "not special" insult seriously for the first time when he repeated it in front of her and Clara.

Another excellent standalone episode with a really great hook for a premise. The FX of being on the Moon looked amazingly real and the spiders were really cool too. My only complaint is Clara flipping out on the Doctor at the end like that. I don't see the big deal about him making humanity decide what to do instead of him.

Well, it is just a hollow egg...

And I imagine nukes are even more powerful 25 years from now.

The most critical factor is to find a hole 800 feet deep.

Only Danny is allowed to flip out on the Doctor. And what an epic flip it will be.

Not really, it's just old people (and old at heart) who think people are more or less self-centered based on how special they are said to be. There have been self-centered assholes through all of history and no single explanation for why.

I agree that it was humanity's decision and she should've always known he was coming back, but then the episode's drama would've been nil.

And Clara's flip-out was also because of the Doctor patronizing her. Talking about taking the training wheels off and all that. That's no way to talk to someone who risked her own life to save his....a million times over. Did he forget that in his regeneration?

"I was respecting you," he said. No, not really.

I get the sense that Clara is flipping out not for having to make the decision but that she doesn't trust the Doctor that she had to make that decision, that he wasn't just toying with her knowing the answer all along.

It was ridiculous for the Doctor, Clara, and Courtney to be judgmental about the Earth wanting to "destroy" the creature. It literally was a one life against billions decision. The Doctor at least stepped back but Clara basically fired a gun at the Earth not knowing if it contained a blank bullet or not.

Sideways reference to the Blinovitch limitation effect!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinovitch_Limitation_Effect

Also yes, the physics were terrible - unless the creature were siphoning energy from another dimension or something, the 1.3 billion tonnes had to come from SOMEWHERE.

Dramatically though, the show was more than fine. I was recalling the last time a companion left the TARDIS in a real huff, and that was Tegan - arguably the ONLY one to leave like that until now, unless you count Ian & Barbara. I really want to see the consequences on the Doctor for being himself in another new way. Well done.

There's that too, yeah. It was probably due to a lot of things building over the season, and came to a head in this episode. He's no longer someone she knows. Before, like in the Christmas Special, he did things like lie and leave her behind, but with the 12th Doctor there are trust issues creeping in. "I don't know who the Doctor is anymore," etc.

And the stress of this situation, plus his snarky/patronizing attitude, pushed her over the edge.

To change the topic, somebody needs to do a mashup where the Doctor tells everyone to watch their language followed by Malcolm Tucker saying "Kiss my sweaty balls you fat fuck."

Is "bloody" that big of a deal in terms of language in Britain? Because I've seen a couple comments on it so far, plus the doctor himself.

I think the fact that the Doctor (or this one) is alien. It's clear by all the episodes of this season that all the criticisms that Moffat has read or heard about has/have been addressed. I think the redemption of Clara as a character is a triumph in every fashion. I'm watching this because I'm a Whovian through and through.

The problem is that perhaps Clara recognized the signs that she had when 11 came to her doorstep in Courtney. Clara became a teacher. The abject crassness that the Doctor has is good if you want to push the fact that he is alien. Fine - but when you tell a story - you have to decide which is the focal point - to make the Doctor as a hero, because the show is called 'Doctor Who', or the companion. As of late, Clara has become a very good character to sympathize with. I wish to know more about her maturity.

But this is Doctor Who we are talking about - permeable in all different views.
