And the barn in The Day Of The Doctor was in a desert, I can't imagine what they'd be farming out in the desert.
Centuries have passed between the barn scene in "Listen" and its reappearance in "The Day of the Doctor" though. Anything could have happened to that landscape.

Why not? They have barns full of hay in the US, don't they? Just because you have a certain standard of technology doesn't mean that it's ubiquitous. We have houses with all kinds of modern gadgets next to barns full of hay. Why shouldn't the Timelords?

And since the couple looking after the Doctor were dressed in an old-fashioned way, maybe this was some sort of eccentric theme house, anyway. This is a planet with a Death Zone and hermits living in the mountains (and behind the Doctor's house) so everything's possible, really.
We also saw folks living out of the Citadel who chose to eschew the high tech civilization there in 'The Invasion of Time'. Why shouldn't some folks like the back to basics life once in a while?

Rodan had food pills in that story and the TARDIS had a food machine first seen in The Daleks, somehow I doubt that thte Doctor's rich parents were simple farmers. And the banr in The Day Of The Doctor was in a desert, I can't imagine what they'd be farming out in the desert.
There were over 2000 years between the two stories. Evidently even Gallifrey undergoes climate change and/or really bad land management that could turn fertile land to desert.

A barn is going to last for centuries while the land around it turned into a desert and the barn still has fresh straw in it?

Maybe the barn isn't really a barn. Maybe its chameleon circuit just makes it look like a barn.

Ignoring those folks outside that Leela met, eh? What could they farm depends on the season.

They're Gallifreyans. They're probably farming time. Maybe they grow TARDISes for a living.
Folks have all kinds of hobbies to be sure. Tardis growing, Gallifreyan Sea Monkeys, who knows? Also, deserts can bloom extensively in the right season. We can be seeing it in unproductive times of year.

Could be, and the farm could be a vacation place rather than a working farm.

Stop giving details about episodes that haven't aired yet.

He didn't give anything away except for the title and the basic premise of the episode that's been shown in the trailer. Some people really need to re-evaluate what constitutes a "spoiler".

I decided to wait until after the episode to see if you would turn out to be right. However, this is complete nonsense. His post wasn't anything you could have gotten just from the episode description. "Nonsensical twist" reveals there is a twist, at a minimum. Exploration of the Doctor's psyche certainly is giving details not in the description. Neither is a major spoiler, but it is a spoiler nonetheless. It's the kind of thing that, in a thread dedicated to that episode might be expected. But without warning in an entirely different thread? I think people expect threads to discuss the episode in question, not the following episode.

In short, I stand by my previous comment.

I haven't forgotten them but htye left Time Lord society, the Doctor's parents however were wealthy. And we know that the Time Lords had machines for making food. Farming and hunting for them is beneath tem. Unless of course you leave their society and have no other choice.

We have machines for making food too, and yet we still farm and we still hunt.

Maybe the straw regenerated. :p

Rodan was clueless about how to survive outside the Citadel. And the tribe she and Leela encountered looked like hunter/gatherers, not farmers.

How do we know it isn't fake straw anyway? If the complaint is why the straw was still there centuries later, that would help explain it. Although we don't know whether or not the land around it turned to desert in that time since we don't know what it looked like this time.

How do we know it's been centuries? And when you see the Doctor opening the door in 3D in a theater the straw does kind of stand out, plus I'm sure the theater showings were in HD. Gallifrey Falls, Ho More also looked pretty awesome in the theater. But to be honest, I didn't think about the location of the barn or the straw til just before I posted that, if Moffat hadn't returned to the barn the barn I'm sure I wouldn't given it a second thought, but I was taken out of the story.

We know it's centuries because of the Doctor's age.

Unless the War Doctor went back in time to visit the barn. ;)

I thoguht about that too, but we know that the Time War was going on over head. It is alittle hard to believe that a wooden barn could survive for centuries.

Still there's a larger issue, Clara used the TARDIS to travel to Gallifrey and refused to tell the Doctor where they were, somehow I think this'll come into play later on.
