Apparently Kovich was in the crowd as well:

I quite like the idea that the E-J was a generational ship that lasted for centuries on missions of inter-galactic exploration, sort of fulfilling the original idea for the Enterprise-D.
This was Doug's thinking for the J. There would be multiple generations of crew and very long, distant missions. The transparent "refit" version as Doug calls it, was intended to illustrate his concept that space-time is compacted towards the edges of the saucer to provide much a larger livable volume inside than outside, with time dilation at the edges slowing the passage of time, extending the longevity of those that chose to live there.

That is insanely cool. I love that kind of high-concept thinking.

I can't help but wonder if the J has its own Vasquez rock. :D

I've not really given that ship much thought over the years, but it's become very interesting in such a short space of time. It's high concepts like this that could really push the boundaries of what Star Trek is actually capable of. If only the money was there.

I completely agree, that Bones would've been a great addition - but, why does McCoy need to be dead? You yourself brought the Shatner-novels up and in those stories, Bones is still alive and kicking. When he asks Bashir, why that'd be and Subatoi says "Dunno", Bones says "Me neither". But Shatner knew - he said that Bones was "too stubborn to die".
The difference is that in the Shatnerverse novels, Kirk was resurrected right after Generations, so McCoy could still be alive. If this short is set in the mid 25th century, instead, I think that's a bit too much for poor Bones to still be around, no matter how stubborn he was.

*giggles* Okay, that's true. ^^

If that were true it would really hint at a 31th century setting.

The last novel take place after nemesis, in the early 2380s.

Not necessarily. He is a time traveler, after all.
Yeah, it's kinda weird in that he's old here, then the younger Daniels is the one who takes the Xindi-primate fellas initiation medal (who is standing in front of Old Daniels/Kovich) to Archer in "Azati Prime".

But as anyone who's watched Doctor Who knows, things don't have to happen in chronological order.

I hadn’t been aware of these films until the other day. Quite an interesting stream of consciousness for Kirk. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Why was Gary Mitchell there? Why was J.M. Colt there? At first I thought Kirk was simply remembering significant events and people in his life and imagining others and there was some sort of transition to the afterlife, though I would have expected to see the bridge crew there. Now I wonder if Mitchell somehow turned into a Q and transported Kirk from the Nexis to some place in the distant future. The alien time soldier somehow knew this was going to occur at this precise time and place and people, including Saavik and Sorak, the son of Spock, gathered to witness this event and send Kirk off. Maybe Kirk has something to do in the Kelvin universe other than to be at Spock’s death bed. Maybe he’s the recipient of Spock’s katra and will return with it to his own universe to share with Saavik and Sorak?

Nice. Confirms some things, leaves some others vague or open to interpretation.

Interesting that Colt viewing the lcars of Kirk’s body from PIC is in the Kelvin timeline.

So KT Colt isn't actually at PU Daystrom Station; she's just looking at the data from it.

You need a corpse or something.
The objection to Mrs. Spock and offspring is that they might be too far in the future. If that's the case there were most likely corpses. (Why are THEY not being reunited with Spock before he dies? Who knows? Maybe they have to go see HER parents? ... Er, the Vulcan one.)

Or time travel. Or Q. Or some inter-dimensional hoodey do that is unique to this story.
