$76.5 million

I'm waiting for the weekend to actually be over before I hear the final numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if it shot up to 80M.

Estimate normally $2 million either way so I doubt that but my god how nice would it be ;)

This also means a new (reboot) TV series.
Many of the actors from the movie won't do a TV series. It's going to have to be a Voyager-esque spinoff.

Bryan Fuller was reported as saying he would like to do a show set on a different ship in the J.J univerese but same clas of ship. Basically a TOS version 2.0 ;). I would hope JJ might team up with Fuller but till till after any sequel if not the trilogy planned by Paramount.

No new TV show for at least 6 or 7 years. Let the franchise build up again (like in the early 80's) and then maybe do something.

Sequel in 2011 and then I would pefer a 3 year gap to any 3rd film to make a trilogy. Assuming the box office numbers don't get so high that Paramount don't want to stay away from TV forever and stick to Box office, I would like to see a TV show in the fall of 2015 so its 10 years since Enterprise and the last time Trek was on TV.

I don't Paramount is going to wait nearly that long. With this kind of money coming in they will likely rush the new series out the door.

But I don't want to derail this thread any longer. I'm going to start a new one on this subject.

Yes, this just needed to reboot...restart the franchise...and make reasonable coin while doing so.

Now, we need an even better sequel, and the Oscar-nominated actor playing the next villain has to die before it opens.

This estimate is Thursday through Sunday, including $4 million on Thursday. The opening weekend proper (FSS) is $72.5 million, and that does include today.

It's normal for Sunday estimates to be in very early, and they're normally very accurate.
But keep in mind that today is Mother's Day.

Which helps or hurts it?

Hard to tell. The movie is 60/40 men to women, so guys might still go to the movie.

As of now, Star Trek has the 4th highest grossing opening weekend for any prequel after Ep3, Ep2, and Wolverine AND it's ranked number one for opening weekends of TV adaptation.
