$76.5 million

The "$7 million" figure was including the $3 million from midnight shows, which actually belong to Friday numbers.

Breakdown:

Thursday 7-12: $4m
Friday 12am Onwards: $26.8m
Saturday: $27.4m
Sunday: $18.4m (projected)

Total: $76.5 million
Star Trek passed Fast & Furious as the 2nd biggest opening of 2009. It was also the 2nd biggest movie opening since The Dark Knight debuted on July 18, 2008 where the Cinemascore was an A. Exit polls show that the audience was 60%/40% male-female, with 65%/35% over/under age 25.

Comparisons to the 3-day opening numbers of Batman Begins and Superman Returns is apples to oranges since both of those films opened on a Wednesday, but this is a great opening for Star Trek.

To put this in context: only three films had 3-day openings of more than $70 million in the summer of 2008. In the summer of 2007 it was six films. Great opening!

This is a great opening. It might go down a bit, but maybe a million at most.

The reason Variety writes their articles that way is because they're an industry publication and use their own parlances.

Looking good. A sequel is pretty much guaranteed now. I really think the sequel will rake in the big bucks. Sometimes you need a buffer film to remove the foul stench of previous movies (think Batman Begins).

I'm waiting for the weekend to actually be over before I hear the final numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if it shot up to 80M.

This also means a new (reboot) TV series.

Dear God please don't let that happen.

Why not?

Not now, lets star trek be a movie franchise first, maybe 3 excellent fun movies, wait a few years and then make a tv show.

PEOPLE DONT ASK FOR WATERING STAR TREK NOW, the lesson is
dont water down star trek making movies and having 3 tv shows airing!!!

I know that most of you are tng era fans, but after tng (the show) trek was watered down into submission and became crap.

Supply and demand people, that is how things work.
