75 year journeyy

Just thinking. Would Voyager have worked better had the journey taken the full 70 years, with each series taking place several years after the previous one?

Over those years we could see significant crew changes, as characters like Naomi and Icheb grow up and take up roles on the ship. And other characters grow old or pass away.

I imagine Captain Old Man Tuvok entering the retired Janeways quarters at the end of the journey to deliver the news that theyve entered orbit of Earth to find shes died of old age...

Oh - and i'm fully aware the producers would never have let it happen in the real world.

And what would you do to the actors? Keep changing them every season?

But of course, this is uncharted territory as far as I know. A Star Trek series with this concept might be interesting. Perhaps they could change the entire cast every season.

I don't think I would like that. I get invested in the characters and love seeing their development over time. I wouldn't like new character every season

I wouldn't go as far as to skip through character lifetimes, but I wish they'd have skipped a few years here and there rather than adhere to the one season = one year formula. But of course that'd require continuity when the studio wanted a show where episodes could be played in pretty much any order...

Well, for forst couple of seasons youd not have to replace anyone. A little make up to make them look a little older maybe but in the 7 years we had noone looked to age much so it wouldnt be too incredible to not age them much til about season 3.

And one thing that made voyager feel less "real" was the lack of major character deaths in their situation. Killing a few off here and there would add to the realism.

Others can be kept on (tuvok and the emh wont change much regardless) and just move into other roles making way for lower ranking officers to take charge.

It'd be like the walking dead in space, in that the cast changes drastically over its run.

As coldhearted as it may sound, I agree. On one hand I was happy to have found a series without anyone "important" dying when I started Voyager, but on the other hand it's also something I miss. It could've also been (a flashback of) a family member's or friend's death of a protagonist to make it less tragic. Death scenes are always so damn emotional and I love it if they're well played. As sad as they might be.

And if we're too sad about a death, we just revive the character via fanfiction/headcanon, which is amost as good. (That's what I do with Harry Potter after all.)

I'm not sure whether I would like this, partly because it's so un-Star Trek-ish, but also because I love character development. Some additional lower ranking characters who would just appear once in a while would've been nice, however.

Voyager is great as it is. That's all I can say.

I agree with this very much although of course I'd gladly change some details. But basically it is good as it is.

Yeah the writers could start with remembering previous character development so they are consistent within reason (allowing some change for inevitable growth) and stop making it entirely episodic.

I don't think I'd like it. 70 years it's inevitable you'd get a new crew. especially if Endgame timeline (minus time travel) had any say. "3 years from now seven is going to die." (or was it longer? Whatever) oh like hell they'd dump their main money maker. so it loses emotional impact, see.

If they'd done that, it would have made better sense to have kept all the Borg children, including the baby. They'd have had to had more coupling up to create new crew members. And perhaps they could have used the Borg nanoprobes to slow the aging process as well.
