I'm from America and I hear disoriented all the time...
Heard it many times too.

Adding unnecessary syllables to words is their speciality.I'm fairly sure it's a British thing.

Shouldn't you be off removing the letter U from every word you can?![]()
This one is my grammar nazi thing. Here's something that really bothered me when I watched that I don't believe I didn't mention before.
Did the Doctor say, "disorientated?" Twice?
That's not a real word, is it? It's disoriented, right? Or is this a British thing?
Knowing which way you're facing is one thing.
Not knowing where/what who you are is another.
Orientation.
Disoriented.

Looks like this isn't the only place there's been a UK/USA disagreement on the word!
Anyway it's our language so disorientated is right!
A race who will use the word "winningest" has no place to criticise another's language.

I was quoting the OED which is the only credible reference in any argument about English (it has all American words too).
Probably the same kind of race where the top three runners get medalled.
'Disoriented' is the one that sounds wrong to me. Then again, I'm Welsh.

Then you're an incorrect grammar nazi.
Both are acceptable usage, so you can't be presciptive.
orient/orientate: arrange eastwards, by extension to get one's bearings
disorient/disorientate: move away from eastwards, by extension to lose one's bearings.

Well, I finally saw the episode yesterday and I really enjoyed it because it was wonderfully old school Who. Rory got a lot to do and stood up against not just The Doctor, but Amy, too. I haven't read the thread yet, but I hope people aren't getting the impression that Rory has feelings for Jennifer (thus creating an absurd and unnecessary triangle) because I certainly don't get that impression. Rather, I see Rory standing up for what he thinks is right and the gender of who he's helping is inconsequential.
