Topless Robot: where you go for massive amounts of WTF fanfic. There's some there that's downright traumatizing. And there's some that makes you wonder what the author was on.

I know a couple of women who never read books that have picked up the 1st of these and seem to be really into it.
So it's definitely penetrating (ha) into the population of people who don't normally read, and I thin that has a lot to do with it's success.
I tried reading it out of curiosity and was kind of bored by it.

I'm not gonna (or want to) argue against BDSM, what consenting people get up I couldn't care less about. But all I'm saying is I have read the book, and it's fairly explicitly stated that Christian Grey gets his rocks off by inflicting pain on women.

Twilight and Stephenie Meyer could have the last laugh though if only because this series was actually a Twilight fanfic published FREE on fanfiction.net a few years ago. Christian and Ana were Edward and Bella.

It was an extremely popular fanfic named "Master of the Universe" by the same writer (or MOTU in twific parlance). Her moniker as a fanfic writer was "Snowqueens Icedragon".
There was even a YT vid made (the most watched one, at least) by JustBiel that's been since re-uploaded from what I can tell. It was hugely popular with millions of hits at one point:

And this is the second vid she put up. They were both hugely popular. It doesn't surprise me that 50 Shades is this popular.
