50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twilight

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

it's worth remembering that this set of books, originally started out as Twilight fanfiction...

Now i'm all for fanfic authors branching out and becoming true authors themselves, but i'd always want the author to do some actual real research into the 'universe' they're writing in...

To use an example here... it'd be like someone writing a Star Trek book with only a basic understanding of the Star Trek universe... using technical terms and gadgets from Star Wars, Stargate, and Firefly throughout the storyline, without actually looking into the way Star Trek uses Phasers, Warp Drive, or Photon Torpedoes...

The knowledge about the 'universe' you're writing in is everything, it's pretty paramount to any style of writing... and it's pretty obvious from reading any of the 'Shades of Grey' series, that the author doesn't even have a basic understanding of the BDSM lifestyle, or what rules, and safety concerns there are within...

If this 'Mr Grey' was actually real, he'd have been shunned from any BDSM community around the world for his ideas and 'wants' in a slave... at most his a misogynistic asshole with no real idea of SSC (Safe, Sane and Consensual), or RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink), who has only basic knowledge of the tools and equipment he's depicted using in the book...

But no one cares. It's fiction. No one is reading this thinking OMG this is such a cool insight into a real life "community".

You'd be surprised how dumb people can be..

Yeah but she didn't use the words Edward, Bella, Sparkle Boy or whatever that references Twillight.

It's a sign of our times that people just don't get copyrights.. it doesn't matter if you tagging along and making a few bucks won't hurt them financially or that everybody is doing it.. it is someone elses property and they have the rights. Just because property in this case not meant to be a car in a garage you can tough but something literary makes no difference.

If she just did some SM themed parties or at least didn't advertise it as a "50 Shades of Grey Lingerie Party" she would have been fine.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

^ Did anyone ever think it wouldn't? Huge book sales, very small budget requirements? It's the most obvious green-light project ever.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

Question is will Hollywood insist it's a PG-13 :p

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

I read it last year, and it's a fairly 'PG-13' book anyway. Unless you find reading about a blowjob particularly "shocking."

I didn't bother with books 2 or 3, so I can't comment on what happens in those, but I don't understand the big deal about what occurs in it. There's one chapter where she's reading his guide to BDSM and she reads things like "anal beads" and "fisting" etc, and she goes "oh gosh." But none of that stuff ever actually happens. It's all just awfully written straight forward male-female sex. The rest was so boring I can hardly remember, I think there was some spanking at some point. oooh spanking! How shocking to read! Yeah maybe if you grew up in the 40s and 50s

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

I am unfortunate enough to have read the first one. Dreadful, it is too. I still can't believe it's being made into a film.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

I got the book cheap just to see what all the fuss was about. I haven't read the second or third books, so I can't comment on them, but as for the first, unless you find a blowjob to be particularly shocking I don't really get what the big deal is.
The primary appeal of the book seems to lie in the psychological implications of bdsm, not in pushing the limits of sex acts for their own sake. It's a case of, forgive me, "more than meets the eye."

Read the Article, interesting...but says nothing new...Alot of Woman do want to be overpowered, but safely. It's why women flock to bad boys and douchebags, in the hopes that they'll be the "bad boy" to everyone else, but desire them and only them. Nice guys don't generate that excitement.

Judging from the dull trailer, I doubt I will be visiting this story on the cinematic form either.
Seems like something that has been done before already, many times. Well, I do hope the lovers of the book will enjoy it at least:)

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

I wouldn't be surprised if this is massive, maybe into the Top 10 or 20 all time box office.

Just because every woman is gonna want to see it, and every man with a wife or girlfriend will take them... because if there's one movie to go see that's gonna guarantee you getting laid afterwards, it's gonna be this one :)

I will say that Jamie Dornan looks a lot more like how I imagined the character than Charlie Hunnam does, I don't know why they ever cast him tbh.
Dakota Johnson too I suppose, maybe just a bit younger.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

The whole thing seems weird to me. Is it going to have an NC-17 rating and be porn? I don't know many women who would want to go see that in a movie theatre. I think the success of the book was based largely on women who don't read or watch a lot of erotic stuff feeling like it was something they could do in private with less stigma attached. Out of the women I know who read the book, I can't think of a single one who would want to go see this in the theatre. On Netflix or something, sure.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

^ I remember reading a while ago that maybe there would be two versions of the movie; one a bit raunchier than the other. But I hardly see either being "porn."

I would imagine though they'll save the harder version for the DVD/Blu-ray release, which will probably only a couple more "tits n ass" shots or something.

Still like I say, I expect there'll be a few extra babies born in November 2015 :)

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

God, this movie looks utterly horrible and looks like it's trying to set feminism back 60 years. See, she's a weak willed shy woman who needs a strong, confident, man to manipulate her and whip her into submission. Her safe word is"Yes, sir." and by "safe" I mean, "Whip me again master, I love it like that."

This movie just looks terrible and it angers me that such Twilight fan-fic got re-jiggered into a world wide phenomenon centering around a woman in bondage being spanked by and older man taking advantage of her weaknesses jn her confidence and personality.

And the movie come out on Valentine's Day, are you fucking kidding me?

So you're telling me to write abook that'll be a best-selling world-wide phenomenon with a movie deal all I have to do is write some sexed-up to the perverted Nth degree fan-fic and then change the names of the places and characters?

No, wait, I can't do that because I'm a man and if I wrote a story about a young woman being sexually beaten into submission, and wanting it, I'd (rightfully) be called a depraved woman-hater.

This movie, and the phenomenon behind and around the book, is a nice example of everything wrong with our society. This movie can go fuck itself, with stilettos and a cat-whip.

And, look, I get that adults are into the S&M thing and that's fine. Not my thing but whatever. But this movie isn't about two kinky adults spicing up the bedroom activities, it's about a powerful man manipulating a naive young woman into submitting to him sexually and making her thinking she wants it.

I think this is a good time to bring back up these quotes:

don't read it... please don't... i read the first few chapters, and found it insulting and completely unrealistic for a BDSM relationship...

That series of books has done more harm to BDSM than any politician or law has done in the past 20 years...

And, if you'd seen some of the pics Methos used to post around here, you'd know this is a guy who knows of what he speaks.

Re: 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon? Mommy porn outsells Potter and Twili

eh, whatever. I don't think the movie is promoting itself as a BDSM doco. Everyone knows it's a trashy novel(s) that came out of fanfic and now it's a probably trashy movie. No more trashy that dumbass car racing movies IMO. It is what it is.

And no I won't be seeing it, or reading the books, but not because it is trashy or god help me inaccurate about BDSM. It just doesn't interest me at all.
