3D interiors in Blender

Decided to test something out, several years ago I did these hanging props from the TNG sickbay, (only seen in 'Future Imperfect' and 'Man of the People' if I recall correctly) as a commission. But other than modeling them on their own, they have remained unused, so now I decided to polish them a bit and see how they looked on the Pride, and I must admit I like them as they kinda fit the somewhat awkward aesthetics.

Also went back to the old replicator design, but gave it a contrasting color like they had on Voyager. Finally, I populated the set with more props and swapped some of the chairs for different designs. I think this is now pretty much done, unless there's any suggestion for something I'm missing.

The only suggestions coming to my mind might be to round those office window corners to match the doorway (purely selfish reasons; the juxtaposition of round vs sharp corners is sending my ocd nuts ), add some more stacked supply cases and surgical equipment ala Yesterday's Enterprise (to evoke the wartime feeling), and if you have one and there's room for it, perhaps put in a VOY style cargobay/sickbay console or a simple E-E engineering console (since you had a TNG one in the original layout).

Other than that it really looks perfect as it is to my eye

@Blip: Heh, I also dislike the fact that the window corners don't match the doorway, but it is consistent with the office on Voyager.

Adding more supplies/equipment's a good idea, I'll do that. As for the consoles, I did try several of those that I have modeled (including the Voy one and E-E engineering), but frankly it ends up being too much, and as the Potemkin sickbay had one I'm happy with this version having no console there. After all the Ent-D sickbay didn't have one.

Oh I know, believe me! Drives me nuts every time I see it!!

As for the consoles, I did try several of those that I have modeled (including the Voy one and E-E engineering), but frankly it ends up being too much, and as the Potemkin sickbay had one I'm happy with this version having no console there. After all the Ent-D sickbay didn't have one.

Tbh I wasn't sure myself if there was enough room without it looking cluttered so I was purely coming from a functionality standpoint - but yes, good point! (Though now I kinda think maybe the Ent-D needs one adding retroactively! )

I did some final tweaks and added more props all over, including a new version or the large medical case as seen in DS9. Here are the finished renders!

I like to think that the screens around the operating bed can be raised and lowered as needed, depending on their function (or the height of the doctor!).

@TOMFAN: Indeed, that's precisely the way we saw them being used in TNG, at different heights. Tho on the show the support beams seemed to be static. On my take you can see I added a telescopic element to the supports, to illustrate that they can be adjusted on the fly.

I know you're done, but I was going to suggest some blankets on the biobeds.

I also have a general suggestion for your sets. Have you ever tried making some generic characters in uniform to populate your sets? I don't mean trying to recreate any of the actors, but just some random people.

Looks better without fake people cluttering the scenery imho. Though I do agree on the blankets.

@cardinal biggles: Indeed, and I had those done already for the same aforementioned commission, but the mirrors looked way too weird. They were so obviously made just to have the reveal of Riker being older in "Future Imperfect".

@Lt. Washburn: I did try blankes as I had them already done for a commission from ages ago. But as this is set is already rather dark, I didn't want to cover up part of the lights coming out of the biobeds themselves and make it even darker.

As for people, it is something I'd enjoy the option of (and I may or may not have used models from existing Trek games as placeholders to test some things), but it's an entirely different workflow and set of techniques to create people and uniforms, so I'd have to invest a heavy amount of time to it.

Another problem with using people is that these sets aren't set up to light them properly. On the shows they cheated and had spotlights behind the camera to have them well lit, I can't do that here so I'd have to tweak the lighting on each scene significantly.

And then as @Blip mentioned, I also do prefer the sets to stand on their own, so I'd have to do some renders twice to show both versions. Totally doable, but again, more time.

I'd be curious to see you do one with people, but none of the modified lighting like you described. Just how it would really look if I were standing on the bridge of one of your ships and other people were there, lit by nothing but what's designed into the room (ceiling, support columns, floor, the glow from the LCARS displays, and maybe ambient light from the viewscreen).

I'm sure it'll look totally awful without the additional lighting they add to make it look cinematic, but it would be an interesting experiment.

Before getting into the room I restarted today, I do have a quick announcement. I've been invited to the STLV convention next week, and I'll be on a panel about creating Star Trek art on Friday 08/08 at 11:45 on the Lounge Stage. There'll be some cool surprises that I can't announce yet, but I look forward to my first Trek convention, and I hope to see some of you there!


I restarted work on the USS Budapest conference room. As the rest of the ship, my brief for it is "Voyager-lite". I had made the basic walls/windows structure a while back, but I couldn't settle on a table design. Now I simply went for a mix of the curved Enterprise-D/E table and the more abstract Voyager design, instead of trying to bend over backwards to try and do 5 things at once with it.

I intend to have a large screen at the center of the room, and the darker circle on the table is a holo-projector for presentations. I'll be swapping the chairs for the Voyager design, I just have these here to give an idea of the space and layout. I also intend to have some of those decorative fabric patterns Voyager had on its briefing room on the side alcoves, as well as some other design touches.

I hope to be able to finish this before leaving next week, but no promises hahaha.

Wouldn't the holo-projector make more sense in the centre of the table, allowing another seat in the space it currently occupies?
