$33million in 29 hours in North America

This movie should be bigger on saturday like most blockbusters because its now appeakling to the general public...At worst Trek is going to hit 70 milion now but there is no reason why 80 should not be passed and even Wolverine's numbers.

I don't get why you expect Saturday night to do less than Friday?

Because that's what happens with virtually every big "genre" movie on opening weekend, if it opens on a Friday. There's pent up demand, and lots of people rush out and watch it on Friday, and then it drops on Saturday. Look at The Dark Knight. Look at Twilight. Look at Quantum of Solace. Look at The Incredible Hulk. Look at Watchmen. Look at Wolverine.

All of them dropped from Friday to Saturday on their opening weekend. Now, granted, this case is a bit complicated because there were all those Thursday night previews. So some of that Friday business was diverted to Thursday. So, OK, it *might* go up on Saturday. But no way is it going to make more on Saturday than Thursday and Friday combined.

$20-25 million on each of Saturday and Sunday is what previous films like this would call for, I think. That means $70 million still isn't a guarantee.

But I think the film has a lot of positive word-of-mouth, and I was speaking to a lot of people who said they were going Saturday to "avoid the crazies". This might be one case where casual attendance is as high as fanboy attendance.

I think some experts are predicting a 5-10% increase on Saturday.

Edit: From the 26 million figure, not the 33.

Is there a good site to track all this ?

I always heard about boxofficemojo but their Trek page mentions nothing about its performance so far.

They even have the production budget as N/A

I'm finally going at 5:30 today, so there's $34 from my family towards the $70+ million.
Here's hoping there's no big second-weekend drop off!

I was going again last night but it will be Sunday before I add more to the opening.

Mojo is good, but never posts anything until numbers are official. They don't post leaks of numbers like Nikki Finke does. Honestly, the best place to track it is messageboards, though that's a bit of a time investment. Worldofkj is a good messageboard for box office:

Well it looks like its going to go past what the studios would consider a success, and internationally too. Looks like we're good for a sequel. Could see it having a bit of staying power because of word of mouth.

I don't get why you expect Saturday night to do less than Friday?

Here in Australia, for most people the working week finishes on Friday afternoon and I'd say most people would be too tired to go out on a Friday evening.

Try going to one of the local cinema complexes on a Saturday night and you will see something COMPLETELY different. Saturday night is THE BIG night out here in Australia because for most people, they can sleep in Sunday and have had all day Saturday to gear up for "a night out on the piss". ;)

Actually, the same general rule holds here in the States.

Huge weekend off for the kids: anticipating Summer, the kids will flock to the theaters-thats why PAR released it this weekend. IIRC, they released CRYSTAL SKULL about this same time last year to grab the Tweens throught 35 market. That's your big target market right there, girls 13-18, who live, eat, and breathe the Jonas Metrosexuals, all the way up to your extremely bored young professional women (the kind who just found out that the man of their dreams is banging the Secretary).

Chris Pine will become a God to them. Paramount and JJ Abrams are not stupid people. They will all secretly hate Zoe Saldana because of her on screen affair with Zach Quinton, until they find out Quinto is gay. Then they will all sigh....

This is monster huge for this franchise-there was a reason JJ ignored the Canonites. He has made Trek available to the general audience which could only connect with Star Wars. SW has been driven into the ground by Lucas' galactic ego and decline in storytelling ability.

Thus, the way is open for the reestablishment of the optomistic Star Trek mythos. And it will connect with a public that wants to believe in a radiant future.

All that's left now is casting for the "Dark Knight" episode of the reborn franchise. We've had "Batman Begins". Even more will be expected of these people-and a much better, much more well put together story.

Thanks.
Though I was looking more for a boxofficemojo kind of page.
Another forum is a bit too much to track at the moment.

But I'm sure you guys here will keep us informed:bolian:

Mojo will surely post Trek's Thursday/Friday numbers some time on Saturday, then Saturday numbers some time on Sunday, etc. They probably just haven't posted anything yet, because of not knowing how to count the Thursday night previews or something.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. They need to do a second movie that Roger Ebert will like. ;) But really, as Ebert did say, now that the characters are established, test their character.

It still disappoints me that more people saw Wolverine than Trek considering the reviews and everything.

Also if it really only makes 70ish Million, breaking 200 Million is going to be nearly impossible.

Wolverine is coming on the heals of the X-Men trilogy, whereas Star Trek is a dead franchise... I'm not worried about Wolverine making more.

Also, BB managed to hit $200 million domestically with a $48 million opening weekend. Maybe Trek will have legs.

Quit being such a negative Nelly! ;)
