$33million in 29 hours in North America

Well, let's just say it's almost made NEM's(pathetic)box office in a little over 24 hours.

Stupid question...

But they only count domestic box office figures when coming up with the final opening weekend numbers right?

Yes, Canada and USA.

Overseas are reported separatley, usually on a Tuesday.

As I indicated Trek has apparently done the same as X-Men in UK, Germany and Austraila. Thats an extra $20 million + from those 3 countries alone. Trek has opened in 54 countries this weekend.

Any reliable estimates on what total cost for the studio was for production, marketing and distribution? As long as they make good coin beyond that, they're set.

Well I went to a regular theatre on Thursday when it opened here in Australia and the crowd was good. Caught IMAX today and it was a sellout. The lines were literally out the door. The only other time I have personally seen it like that with lines out the door 45 mins prior to show time was with The Dark Knight last year. Obviously it won't do numbers near TDK, but if it even does a third it'll be a massive win for Star Trek.

ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORES FOR THE LAST 5 OSCAR WINNERS
2004 – Million Dollar Baby – 91% Fresh
2005 – Crash – 75% Fresh
2006 – The Departed – 92% Fresh
2007 – No Country For Old Men – 94% Fresh
2008 - Slumdog Millionaire – 94% Fresh

So, de facto Oscar anyone?

When I saw it at 7pm on Thursday night, my theater was full. On the way out there was a huge line waiting to go in. Last night my IMAX showing was packed and yep, a huge line was waiting when we got out. Haven't seen that for a flick in a while, it was a fantastic sight (as was this really hot woman in a TOS mini-skirt uniform, but that's another topic...) :)

Holy shit...

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to box office figures...

$33 mil is pretty good so far right?

Thats wonderful it a day and a few hours (7 mil + 26 mil)...Saturday normally makes more than friday or sunday so if thats 30 and then 25 sunday for example...

thats a weekend total of 88. just a guess but Star Trek is going to beat Wolverine opening USA numbers.

Good? let's put it this way: Star trek made in a day what STFC made in a whole weekend. STFC was the previous ST record holder with $30 million.

RAMA

I can tell you now, with 150% degree of certainty that ST will NOT win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Now, if you get that disabled midget that everybody says was at their premiere and get HIM to star in the NEXT ST movie and make it about HIS struggle in Starfleet......well, THEN I could confidently assure you AT LEAST a nomination!

Actually, use some treknobabble mcguffin and have him age backwards and there would be NO contention!!!

For a big budget sci-fi movie on opening weekend, Saturday is not going to be bigger than Friday. In this case, it's kind of complicated though, because it sort of opened on Thursday, so some of the business that otherwise would have been on Friday was diverted to Thursday....

Still, suggesting that it's going to beat Wolverine's opening weekend is way too optimistic IMHO.

I don't get why you expect Saturday night to do less than Friday?

Here in Australia, for most people the working week finishes on Friday afternoon and I'd say most people would be too tired to go out on a Friday evening.

Try going to one of the local cinema complexes on a Saturday night and you will see something COMPLETELY different. Saturday night is THE BIG night out here in Australia because for most people, they can sleep in Sunday and have had all day Saturday to gear up for "a night out on the piss". ;)
