3 Reasons Why You SHOULD Binge-Watch Star Trek.

Hey guys,
One of my buddies made a video about why people shouldn't binge-watch Star Trek. In there he mentioned how giving a week between episodes allows for time to ponder the previous episode and anticipate the next one. In short it's a cool video. (Link to it in the description of my video)

However, I feel a bit different and believe that binge-watching is almost a necessity. One of the reasons being that we have soooo much Star Trek it's hard to get though it all only watch an episode or a movie once a week.

I just watched to point #1, and there's a major mathematical error there. 716 installments at one installment per week would be about 13.77 years, not 2.03. Two years would be roughly right for one installment per day...which I think would be a reasonable pace, given the sheer bulk of it and the amount of realtime that it took for all of that to originally be released.

Yeah I messed up on that. It wasn't until right after the video was uploaded that I realized my math mistake. Sooo yeah I'm kicking myself about that. However, It does prove the point better. 13.77 years to watch all of Star Trek would be a bit to much, even for me. :)

I agree about that, but having watched the rest, I can't say I'd recommend a newcomer commit themselves to watching multiple episodes a day. The franchise is vast, and many of us watched much of it as it was released over the span of decades. And while it does get serialized at some points, it was by and large very episodic and doesn't demand a binge-watching approach. If anything, its many installments are probably best appreciated if given some breathing room between episodes.

If I were inclined to commit myself to a full-franchise watch-through and had nothing else going on in terms of old series watching, I could maybe see trying to do one a day on weekdays and two on days off. That pace would come out to roughly 1.5 years, which is a reasonable commitment of time for such a huge undertaking. Interestingly enough, this ongoing thread is by a young poster who's been watching through the franchise for the first time, in release order, since October 2015 and is currently somewhere in Enterprise, which comes out to roughly that pace.

I either don't watch it at all when I'm too busy or have other interests, or I binge watch it like crazy, with multiple episodes from multiple series a day.

Biggest argument against binging is patterns of the show stand out more.

That being said I think all Trek lends itself to binging because even weak franchises tend to have endearing characters and a sense of fun.

I rarely watch episodes in order. On Netflix it shows the little red bar on episodes you've already watched, so I just watch them randomly, and eventually there's none left. Then I take some time off, and when I watch Trek again, it'll be a different series.

Oh yeah, I don't think it makes sense to watch multiple Trek series at the same time. If I watch TNG, I get into the characters, invested and whatnots, and to switch mid stream to another series can be jarring. If I'm into DS9, it's only DS9. If I'm into Voyager, its only Voyager, etc.

I can't imagine trying to watch a whole Trek series (like a 7 season one) in episode order. That seems like it'd be tedious. One Caveat to this is parts of s3 ENT, and DS9's final half season. I usually watch those in order.

This is how I am. I was heavily binging on DS9 and ENT for a while. Then I got into Halo. So, once that quiets down, then I'll go back to binging on Trek.

Right now I'm binge watching ENT, most of which I'd never seen before. I'm also playing Mass Effect 3 and I'm really getting into expanding my Trek collection (binge collecting??). I'm particularly thrilled with the Diamond Select starships.

I started watching Trek from the beginning sometime in early 2015 but its been on and off.. As such i'm only in season 2 of TOS, i can binge like six episodes a day if i want to but i have other things that take my time that its really slowed down my watching...

At the same time, if I enjoy something like Star Trek, i don't need extra time to take it in... I just watch it.. I'm not going to break down episodes by every little detail.

I hope to find a steady rhythm this year.

I always just go back to my favourite episodes and then go on from there. There's still lots of Trek I've never watched or only watched when it aired.
