24 SEASON 1

I haven't seen season one since it originally aired back in 1853. My teenager daughter and my son, he wasnt even born when this came out, are watching it with us. We started tonight (for free on NETFLIX streaming) and watched the first four episodes..

Its like watching an all star episode...Jack, Terri, Kim, Nina, Tony, Mason, the lesbien killers, David..sherry!!!...

One thing I noticed? The episodes just seem tighter back in these days...more tension too.

What are you fond memories of season one? Im glad I dont remember the details because other than the big 'betrayal' coming toward the end, I cant really remember much at all...i guess having a failing memory can be a GOOD thing...

Yep...there's no cussing and so far no whacko interogation scenes. he is a big TERINATOR fan (1-2) which make 24 look like Adam 12..in fact, I remember my grandma getting all over my mom for letting me watch adam 12..so go figure..

I just noticed this last night and added it to my queue. The only 24 I've ever seen is this year's season premiere, but I wanted to check out Season 1 since it's available.

BTW, Netflix added a lot of awesome stuff this week to their Instant library! Right now I'm watching the first season of the X-Files!

I thought they did a really good job depicting the rising tensions between the states of the Union in the first season. While I found some of the actions Jack Bauer takes to protect Lincoln to be morally reprehensible, it seems as though Lincoln might be a good thing for the country and the only man who can keep the Union together. I guess we'll find out in later seasons.

It's a shame that when writing subsequent seasons of 24, the writers didn't realise that S1 showed that less can be more. The threat here was to Jack's family and Palmer's life (Palmer wasn't even President yet). No nukes, viruses, chemical weapons etc. But the series is as tense, exciting and tight as any of its successors.

It was also interesting that in one episode Jack was told by Nina that 'the threat of torture could be just as effective on this guy' (played by Curry Graham. In later seasons, Jack would pull out someone's toenails just to get directions to McDonalds.

The cast in this season was awesome, even if many were unknown (compared to later guest stars). Jack's family, Tony (we didn't know if we could trust him at that stage and it's interesting how antagonistic his relationship with Jack is), Nina, George Mason, Ryan Chappelle Palmer's family and campaign team (shout out to Jude 'Turtle' Ciccolea as Mike Novak), then guest appearances from Lou Diamond Philips (Young Guns in the 21st Century) and Dennis Hopper.

Admittedly, Hopper is awful in it. But still.

Season one still had the best 24 villain -- Gaines. But then they changed gears and had him working for the Drazens, and thus every season after that there was a bad guy who turns out to be working for another bad guy, and sometimes even yet another bad guy above him.

I plan to rewatch the earlier seasons too which will be easy since they're now on Netflix streaming. Maybe that will get the dead animal carcass taste of the current season out of my mouth.

Maybe, at the time of the post, the OP was subconsciously preoccupied with thoughts of the Crimean War which started that year?

I watched the pilot episode back in the 19th C! About 15 minutes...I have no idea why I disliked it so immediately...probably just looked like "standard spy stuff" to me...bailed on it and tried it again in S2. I guess Jack cutting off that guy's head is what finally sealed the deal for me.

When I finally caught up on S1 via DVD, it was obvious that the writers had the first 12 episodes planned out as a nice, tight arc, in case of mid-season cancellation. Then they got renewed and didn't know what the frak to do! Terri's amnesia was one of the more obviously desperate measures they've ever pulled...

All I kind of remember from season 1 was a young lady cop coming to help out Bauer and she died fairly quickly. Which is a fate destined for a lot of Bauers acquaintances.

I think that allowing a child to watch this season is a pretty sure sign of bad parenting.

I don't see that at all, there's nothing too terrible on the show -as it was shown on national TV- and "bad parenting" would be not watching the show with the child. Watching it with the kid gives a chance for the parent to talk about what is happening with the child. Further, a nine-year-old isn't that young and shouldn't be negatively effected by watching a tv show with his or her parent.

I've watched every episode of every season and I think the show is a bit much for a child, especially when it comes to the scene where Jack's wife gets raped. And the torture scenes are also inappropriate for children. I just couldn't imagine watching this show with a child sitting next to me.

Maybe they were so uncomfortable with what they saw, and shocked that their parents sat their watching it without saying a word, that they just didn't know how to express themselves.

Shame on you. Equating sex-ed and what they just watched is reprehensible.
