it's targeted at middle / high schoolers, so if you're not in that target demo it's not going to hit the right way. It's all about dealing with emotions, making friends, and high school-esque drama, which it does pretty well. It's definitely not for me though as a dude that hasn't been in high school in decades.

I wish IDW showed the ratings or anything on the cover to indicate this type of thing, because while I enjoy seeing what the kids are reading these days, it's not necessarily something I would spend money on myself if I wasn't already buying everything with "star trek" on the cover and could at least set my expectations correctly. In fact, this would dovetail pretty well with my wish that there was more content released for all the major demographics, which include the adorable "golden books" all the way up to the "military scifi with mature themes" stuff that I personally go for.

While I am not the target demographic, I can handle most YA and such just fine. This struggles more due character portrayal than being a YA style.

I don't think that's valid as a generalization. I'm 55 years old, but I enjoy a lot of fiction aimed at high schoolers more than I enjoy a lot of fiction aimed at adults. I also enjoy a lot of fiction targeted at different gender or ethnic/cultural categories than mine. Demographic categories aren't meant to be exclusive clubs. Aiming at one audience doesn't require alienating other audiences, and a well-done work of fiction can be accessible to everyone who's open to it.

I just don't believe you can judge an individual work based on its category. That's just an excuse to avoid trying things on a case-by-case basis. I've ended up liking a lot of things that I initially didn't think I would based on first impressions. And there are plenty of cases where two works are in very much the same wheelhouse, but I like one better than the other. For instance, Netflix's The Dragon Prince is from some of the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra and has a lot of stylistic and tonal commonalities, but while I do like a lot about TDP, I find its sense of humor to be clumsier, more annoying, and less effective than the humor of the Avatar shows.

@tgiokdi You've made a great point about it. I did my dissertation on teen dramas, and still enjoy a good one, but jumped from Picards Academy after the first issue, I'm clearly not in its target audience, I just didn't get the vibes, the art style felt very similar to Heartstopper which my much younger cousin absolutely adores - but she's at the upper end of the young adult target demographic and in my mid-forties

Okay, fair point, but like I said, it's case by case. There are plenty of cases where I like one thing in a certain style or genre but not something else in the same style or genre. Because style and genre are just two out of many factors making up a work, and it can be one of those other factors that makes the difference between something I like and something I dislike. There's something like the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, where I rather disliked the art style but quite liked the writing and voice acting. So I don't see the logic in assuming you won't like anything about a work just because of one thing you don't like. You never know unless you actually try.

This is my first experience with this type of art style, outside of a few of the IDW Captain Marvel series from a few years ago. The swoopy hairstyles remind me of the art style on PennyArcade, but I think that's about where the comparisons end, lol.

But that's the beginning of the process, not the end. Category is just the roughest level of analysis.

All I'm saying is that I've often been surprised when I tried things I didn't initially think I'd like. First impressions aren't completely valueless, but they aren't the entire story either. Nothing can be reduced to a single, glib, universally applicable answer. Reality doesn't work that way.
