2016 MLB Regular Season - It's an Even Year...

The NFLPA is a long, long way away from the halcyon days of Gene Upshaw's leadership, my friend.

And, yes, people seem all too willing to forget that the players are quite literally the product. Those billions upon billions of dollars the owners make every year don't happen without, you know, stuff happening on the field.

I never understood why the union never demanded guaranteed contracts. It's not like there is a shortage of cash in the NFL.... only air in footballs :D

As far as I know, there's nothing in the NFL's CBA that prohibits guaranteed contracts (heck, most contracts do include at least some amount of guaranteed money). It's more that due to the insane injury risk of football -- the average career length is now below three years -- owners have traditionally been hesitant to guarantee the full value of a contract.

ESPN finally fired Curt Schilling after his latest rant about transgendered people. I'm sure he'll be at FS1 within the week.

Not a rant so much as another shared meme. His statement after that did try and double down on it instead of backing off, though.

As smart a baseball player as he was, that's how dumb he is in real life. And about social media in general. He's a right wing nut job, and just can't help but troll and engage in pissing matches online. Can't seem to figure out that he's a celebrity and that people see what he's posting. As much as he dislikes it sometimes, he's not a regular facebook troll.

And even completely ignoring this round of bigoted stuff, he's mostly fired for being stupid. He got his wrist slapped and demoted for sharing a meme comparing Muslims to Nazis. Told to stop posting crap like that. Didn't take him long to go back to it, got away with a couple, and then after a horrific swing and a miss at weighing into the transgender bathroom issue, he was 'shocked' and 'blindsided' with the criticism he received this time.

you'd think after losing 50M of personal money in a poorly conceived video game venture, he'd be more protective of his ~1M/year ESPN gig. Depressingly, he kinda DOES need the money. But nope, can't keep his big mouth shut in public/social media. Hard to feel bad for him here.

That and he's clearly on the wrong side of this issue (and history). About as bright as arguing against gays, or inter-racial marriage. No one is forcing him to be gay, or marry a black girl, or use the women's room. more of that Trump platform of 'silent majority' that has some sort of right to oppress the minorities because they are the majority. fuck that.

Because of lack of funding I'm sure.;)

If anything, they should start by pouring more money into Minor League salaries. Yeah, the ML'ers could get a bigger share of revenues, but the mL'ers aren't even scraping by at this point. Not that they should be making millions or anything, and the mL revenue may not support a ton more, but pour some of the ML money into the minors. Constant stories about guys that are working a couple jobs, only get good food at the stadium, living 4 guys to an apartment, etc. Just such a drastic difference between making ~$400k ML minimum and the average salary in the minors, which is $1500-2500 a month, and only during the season.

Part of why you see fewer Black baseball players; can't afford to grind your way to the Majors. White players have a leg up there, and Hispanic/Japanese players are getting signing bonuses that allow them to do it without the standard salary.
This is a great post. The local Single - A affiliate has raised ticket prices, concession prices, and souvenier prices - to the point that we can spend over $100 bucks for a family of four to come watch some kids who would make more working at McDonald's pouring their heart and soul into a game just for a chance to make it big.

Cubs shellacked the Reds 16-0. Lots of homers (2 by Bryant) and Jake Arrieta went 2-4 plus a walk at the plate. Addison Russell was the only starter without a hit.

And oh yeah, a no-hitter by Arrieta. He wasn't even at his best with 4 walks (+1 FC) & only 6 K's. Only about 6 or 7 balls made it to the outfield. The wicked slider wasn't working tonite.

Then an idiot fan decides to join the Cubs celebration on the field.

I might agree if it was the Philles or the Marlins (a perpetual AAAA team).

Cincy isn't good right now, but they have some decent hitters. They're a .500 team.

Not suggesting anything crazy, but gotta be enough profit left to share from the MLB clubs to guarantee the kids 40k or so so they can comfortably afford to pursue the career path. Nothing nuts, but enough for food, car, not 8 guys in a studio apartment, etc. Certainly takes away from the bottom line, and know things are a little squirrely because the minor league teams are not owned by the big club, more of an affiliation, but gotta be a way to swing that and have the MLB club pick up the tab. Can't really swing it from the mL team revenues, not huge profits there, and no stomach to raise prices enough anyway; fans will just go to the ML game if you make tickets more expensive.

We've got a good AAA team here in RI, and $8 pretty much gets you run of the place. Food's pretty reasonable, free parking. If you skip the pricy beers, it's a good cheap family night.

The Yankees can't score runs...
not to be TOO snarky, but where are you EXPECTING the runs to come from? Know it's been predicted every year since about 2005, but Yankees are kinda old and tired for the most part. Gardner is still decently young, but the rest of them? Pretty solid combination of old, broken down, or in a couple cases, just having a shit start to the year (Ells, Headley). The exact same roster in 2005 would have been fearsome (minus the couple kids who would have been like 8), but it's 2016 and those are the same names. They can still get it done in stretches, but are you expecting 2005 Beltran out there? ARod? McCann? Teixeira? Didi is more defensive, there's a reason the Cubs bailed on Castro, and Ells just seems to have broken down over the past 2 years.

They'll definitely still win their share of games, but just not going to be a fearsome group, even if you recognize all the names from back when they were good.

Kinda like saying the rotation must be great because CC is your #5 starter. If it was back when he was decent, you'd be right, but it's borderline starter/long man CC you're throwing out there. Not the worst thing for a #5, but gotta get off of the expectation that he's going to find the old magic. Age/injuries have caught up with a lot of these guys.

Maybe. Been expecting this forever and somehow the Yankees always seem to kick the can down the road a little further.

Edit: Jesus, went and looked, even Gardner isn't as young as I thought anymore. Kid's going to be 33 this summer. Castro and Didi are 26, the rest of the roster is basically mid-30s and up.

rYup, we are still old... but their working on getting younger...

I don't think it's out of the realm to expect to score like they did last year. Hell, they improved through trade.

No one is hitting, A-Rod doesn't have anything to prove anymore....

We seem to have one player hit in spurts so far...

I will defend Tex though... his numbers last year were great until the fluke injury, same with Ells.

CC has actually pitched pretty well.

Ells will do fine if they can keep him in the line-up.

When your power is coming from DiDi and Gardner (recently), you're in trouble.

Hey, we just got swept by the powerhouse A's...

We need to send all our starting pitcher aside from CC and Tanaka to Tampa so they can learn how to throw a change-up.:brickwall:

I work with a couple huge O's fans.... they say he couldn't hit the strike zone when he was in Baltimore. :D

Yeah, Arrieta never hit his stride in Baltimore, and his success in Chicago speaks to Chris Bosio's work. Bosio worked with him on his throwing motion, changing his release point and how he steps off the rubber (he always had pretty awful command in the Orioles system, going back to his days in the minors), and nearly doubled the frequency of his slider to the point that it was right with the sinker as his #1 pitch.

Between the Cubs and Orioles both getting off to solid starts, this has been a pretty fun April, yes. :)

Cubs' fans have to be feeling pretty good this year.

Last year was great, but they got off to a so-so start and finished with only 97 wins.

It feels like we picked up where we left off last regular season for sure (9 straight wins).

12-4 with Heyward, Rizzo and Russell all hitting around .200 (Bryant has picked up a bit average-wise). The ability to draw a lot of walks and wear out the starting pitcher is still serving them well.
