2012 NFL Offseason

I don't blame him. This marks the third straight year the Bears are paying more money to the backup RB than Forte. Chester Taylor got $7 million to have a historically terrible season. Can't blame Forte for finally getting cranky. He still has pride, after all.

Oh, I don't blame him either.

I just think people should not conduct business on Twitter.

Under the franchise tag, shouldn't Forte be making a shit-ton of money this season? I think his beef is not having a contract.

He'll make $7.23 million this year, but all he's ever wanted is a long-term deal and the Bears have failed to make it happen. (And, in the Bears' defense, Arian Foster's shiny new contract doesn't make matters any easier.) For two years running, Jerry Angelo told him to pound sand and said that they'd talk when his rookie deal was up, and now he's hurt that the Bears went out and signed Bush to a four-year deal, ostensibly to gain leverage over him (Forte), instead of actually working to get him locked up.

I think there's a real chance that Forte refuses to sign his tender. On the open market next year, he will certainly command at least a Foster-level contract. I'm not sure he'll want to risk that type of guaranteed money for a one-year contract on a team that he's not exactly happy with right now.

I know contracts are not guaranteed in the NFL, but not all the specifics.

But in a violent enough game at a position with a short shelf life, you can't blame him for wanting to be signed long term.

I'm still wondering who will be the #1 back in NE this year now that Bengal-Jarvis Green-Ellis signed elsewhere.

If I were his agent, I would have walked into Phil Emery's office the day he was hired and said, "Matt Forte was your team's entire offense this past season. Pay this man."

I just looked up his stats, as I don't typically follow the Bears.

1,000 on the ground on only 200 attempts and 500 in the air on 50 catches is nothing to sneeze at.

5 yards per carry and a 1st down per catch would be welcome in my backfield any day of the week.

Barring any more signings or RB draft selections, it'll be Ridley. He's shown promise, but he's also shown a tendency to fumble.

Vereen will be the faulk-like scat back.

And now you get why Forte is pissed that the Bears felt the need to sign Bush as leverage, instead of just giving him $6.5 - $7 million in guaranteed money. (If Forte's camp is arguing for $8MM plus, then, yes, he's being unreasonable.)

That said, if they can get Forte signed, the Bears' offense is going to be scary. Forte's one weakness is in short-yardage situations, and Bush excels in that. That covers the ground game, which will keep defenses honest. They're going to have Cutler2Marshall going all year long (assuming Cutler doesn't get murdered), and I'm sure they'll add to OL / WR depth in the draft (although, if Martz hadn't insisted that the team trade Greg Olsen, they wouldn't need to draft for WR depth -- Martz, you fuck

).

It's weird how opinions about Forte seem to have completely shifted here in Chicago.

Prior to his injury last season, a clear majority of people were on his side since he was a massive part of the Bears' offense. Post-injury, there seem to be a lot more people who think his claim of being dissed by the team is completely ridiculous, and that he should be happy to make $7m a year. As for me, I think the guy needs a new agent who can get things done, assuming the amount he's asking for isn't completely over the top.

About Greg Olson: I'm sure Martz and Angelo absolutely savored the bucket of fried chicken and 40 oz. they got in return for him. Fucking morons.

The way I see it, if the Bears are offering only $6MM or so, they're being cheap. If Forte's asking for $8MM+, then he's being unreasonable. There's a middle ground, and unfortunately the Foster and DeAngelo Williams contracts have artificially inflated the market to a ridiculous extent. Both sides are in a hard place, here.

Think of what happened to Brees at the end of his run with the Chargers (and this goes to why Brees is pissed too). He was franchised for that last season. He wasn't happy, but he went ahead and signed the tag. He ended up getting injured that season and the Chargers didn't want him back. Because of that injury, Brees was hanging out to dry and no one was willing to take a chance on him. The Saints eventually stepped up to take him, but it was looking like he was done for a while. These guys are just wanting some security that if something happens, they won't be S.O.L. And in the case of Forte, he's been operating the last several years for a little more than free (relatively speaking) for the Bears, and they've been running him into the ground. Yes, he'll get a decent amount of money this year, but what if he gets injured again and it's a lot more serious? The Bears in that case would have used him, abused him, and he would have never gotten the opportunity to get a contract worthy of a guy who accounts for nearly half of a team's offense.

I fully understand the point behind wanting a contract versus the 1yr tag. My quoting of Timby however was pointing out that it's incorrect to say that for the 2012 season Forte will be getting paid less than another RB. Hence why I said his beef is not having a contract.

Forte absolutely would prefer to sign a contract with guaranteed money rather than play one season and get cut at the end.

I saw that... they must have a ton of faith in Manning not getting hurt in the next two years. Either that, or they expect Weber to really break out of his shell and take the back up position.

Better option than Curtis Painter.

Who has yet to be signed by any team.

Painter is not and has never been an NFL-caliber quarterback.

Indy horribly miscalculated on that front and stuck with him when they should've been drafting backup quarterbacks to replace him.
One of the many reasons Polian is no longer with the organization.

Cheers.

Posted same in the Tebow thread:

Denver still has no backup QB, they've signed Caleb Hanie.

Story.

If Peyton goes down, we'll get to see if Hanie struggled because of Martz's shit playcalling or if he really is THAT freaking terrible. I hope Peyton doesn't go down, for the sake of all you Broncos fans...

Every Colts fan in the nation knew it was a bad idea when Peyton was pulled in the second half of that Jets game. The fact that Painter survived for two more seasons is absolutely ludicrous.

Goodbye to bad rubbish.

Some interesting rumors instigated by the often-wrong Incarcerated Bob that the Patriots are seriously pursuing Matt Forte with multiple draft picks.

Take it for what it's worth:

NE Patriots & Chicago Bears have been discussing a blockbuster deal that would land Forte in New England (Pats offering 2ndRd & 4thRd pick) #IBN sources are saying that this deal has picked up major steam the past 48Hours and something could pop at anytime.. Source is stating, Pats view Forte as the last piece to a major offensive juggernaut, only thing that may stop this deal from happening is the Bears insisting on another high pick this year or next year. My source states this will be worked out sooner or later and we could very well see Forte running for Brady & the "Hoodie" soon...
