2012 Academy Awards show

Assuming this hasn't been covered: why was Harry Morgan not included in the IN MEMORIAM piece while Steve Jobs and Whitney Houston were? Morgan had plenty of decent film roles from the 40s through the 60s; he's hardly just a TV star. Whitney Houston: fantastic singer, but as for acting ability strictly on an Elvis Presley level. Steve Jobs? I'll admit his I-phones disrupt 90 percent of the films I watch, but other than a stint at Pixar, does that warrant a still-frame close-up?

A few were probably missed by the TV viewing audience since the camera lingered on the singer while the pictures were on the big screen. According to this link he was among the 79

Well, he did buy Pixar from George Lucas, which was a little more than a special effects studio at the time, and allowed it to become one of the most successful animation studios, not to mention a highly influential one, one that has pioneered 3D animation. So, I certainly feel he's earned his place there. If it weren't for him and Pixar, the state of 3D animation would likely be a very different one. When Toy Story burst onto the scene from a little known studio named Pixar, nothing like it had been seen aside from TV shows like Reboot. It was groundbreaking. So, I think that's the angle they were taking with that.

Thank goodness the Academy got rid of Ratner and Murphy and replaced them with Grazer and Crystal. Otherwise we might have gotten something inappropriate and offensive like, I dunno, a 60 year old white man in blackface or something.

That was a callback to Crystal's Saturday Night Live work in the '80s; his Sammy Davis Jr. sketch back then was one of the real-life Sammy's favorite things ever.

Things that played 20-or more-years ago don't always work in a modern context.

I'd say that's more true of a Sammy impression in general than the blackface.

It been years since I have actually liked the Best Picture. I am very happy about this! I hope more people check it out now!

Same here.

I thought The Artist was a truly wonderful and charming movie and I am very glad it won Best Picture. I'm usually against the movie that wins Best Picture because I feel the praise is either hyperbolic or I'm just don't have any attachment to it, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed The Artist. I'm really glad Jean Dujardin won Best Actor over George Clooney, who gave a traditionally mediocre performance in The Descendants (which was, in my humble opinion, a very mediocre film in general).

I'm glad Woody Allen won for Midnight in Paris and I'm glad Hugo swept the technical awards. The only real big disappointment I had was Robert Richardson winning Best Cinematography for Hugo over Emmanuel Lubezki for The Tree of Life. Even though I thought The Tree of Life was terribly pretentious and overwrought, the cinematography was absolutely stunning. I loved Hugo, but in no way did it have better visuals than The Tree of Life.

I was also a little disappointed that Meryl Streep won. Even though I think she's a tremendously talented actress, I would have preferred Viola Davis or Michelle Williams to walk away with the award. Oh, well.

I'm still shocked she didn't win for DOUBT three years back.
More and more winners seem to be getting the Oscar for celebrity characters, particularly the Best Actors of late.

So wait, How is Whitney included in the remembrance video? She was in one movie! little weird iyam

Nope, she did several. People have been included in the In Memoriam segment for doing less.

Oh, and Oprah did not win for being in The Color Purple, but she got the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Nothing to do with filmmaking per se.

And yet Diane Cilento, who was actually nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Tom Jones, didn't make the cut.

Granted, they can't include everybody, but you would think past Oscar nominees would be a shoo-in!
