2010 The Film

I read the book, 2001, but couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of the movie. Kubrick was a nut. 2010 was more in keeping with the book.

Good, I'm not alone in the 2001 versus 2010 battle. For years I kept a VCR of 2010 copied off of the late night movie before we had infomercials. 2010 v. Sunshine?

Oh, you are not alone.
2001 (and in turn Kubrick) is one of the most overrated films (directors) out there.
It is boring beyond compare. The visuals are fantastic but other than that it's utter crap.

I had the same opinion about a decade ago. I enjoy it very much now, but I can see why others might not.

The film obviously lacks the more timeless charm of its predecessor, although that one is dated by more than its chronology as well, but I enjoy 2010. The scene where "Bowman" first makes his presence known to Floyd is excellent. I would be cautiously interested in adaptations of the remaining two novels, but I doubt those will come to fruition. 2010 is much more of a mainstream film than 2001, complete with roaring spaceships, and still it's considered "intellectual" in its approach by some.

I'm still of the opinion that you haven't REALLY seen 2001 unless you've seen it with decent projection on a big big screen. It's a movie wherein the power is all in the images.

I tell people who've never seen it to not go in expecting it to be a movie in the traditional sense. It's more like a big art film, and it doesn't hold to conventional narrative structure. I realize it's not for everyone.

I saw 2001 in 35mm when I was 8 years old. Made me fall in love with cinema and sent me on the crazy trajectory I'm currently following. It's coming to Cornell Cinema in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to see it in its proper form once again.

Ah..2010 :) One of my favorite scifi-films of all time. Its certainly something ive seen many, many times over the years. This and Jaws made me a big fan of Roy Scheider.
I think this film has somewhat unique athmosphere and the space scenes look realistic, the planets are big as they should be and the spaceships are cool.
When i saw this for the firsr time, i thoght that Helen Mirren is actually Russian actor..LOL.

I loved 2010, and enjoyed it more than 2001. The downside of 2001 for me were tediously long scenes to show the environment. The stewardess and the weightlessness, the ships floating through space. I had much the same feeling for a lot of shots in Star Trek: TMP, I wanted the story to get on with it. 2001 would be better for me with about twenty minutes less of long mood pieces. I will admit 2010 is eyerolling with the political anti-coldwar imagery, but it tells a cracking good story.
