God, "Overload" was such a great debut single.

I have a rather fuzzy view of this decade - there were good bands, good scenes, good songs - but very little seems to stand out. I think my interest in current music dwindled dramatically as the decade went by - as good as a lot of it was, it seemed very derivative, and there was an awful lot of fethisization of the past (contrived recreations of garage rock, post-punk, 80s electro and early rave culture).

I'll think of some songs later...

My view of the 2000s was very much clouded by the mashup scene which became very visible as the decade drew on, each megamix essentially a snapshot of what was big at the time.

That said... whenever I think of the year 2000 itself, this song always springs to mind, the UK's first new #1 single of the 2000s:

I felt rather a disconnect from the music scene this decade. Unlike the 90s I wasn't a regular viewer of music video channels (not that many still actually SHOW music videos), and I felt that sort of pushed me away from keeping track of emerging artists.

There are a few exceptions.

Nellie McKay blew me away with her debut album "Get Away from Me", though I was less impressed by the followups.

Regina Spektor put out some great stuff (and yes I know she and McKay are pretty interchangeable, musically).

Imelda May is a brilliant Irish rockabilly singer who's been around for awhile, but I just discovered her work a couple months ago.

He & She featuring Zooey Deschanel is a group I quite liked this year. Also, Sharleen Spiteri of the group Texas put out a brilliant solo album a year or so ago. Violinist-singer Lili Haydn did some great work (her ballad "Satellites" is very nearly my favorite song of the decade).

The decade also saw great new releases by long-time favorites of mine, including Laurie Anderson (who released a live album that was recorded in New York City only days after 9/11), Kate Bush (Aerial showed she still has what it takes) and Enya (her attempt at updating her sound with Trains and Winter Rains was controversial, but brilliant. It's a shame the decision to tie "Only Time" into 9/11 has forever linked her to that event).

I have to give a nod to Murray Gold, composer of the Doctor Who soundtracks, as my favorite composer of the decade, with Bear McCreary coming a very close second for his work on BSG, including his brilliant reworking of All Along the Watchtower.

Other groups/performers of interest to me this decade included Jonathan Coulton (mainly on the strength of "Still Alive", the best song ever composed for a video game), White Stripes, and Nelly Furtado. I also gained an interest in several groups/performers of the past whose music I rediscovered in the last 10 years, including Kay Kyser's Orchestra, Louis Prima, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the Doors. There were also many examples of artists I liked for single songs, such "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim (obviously because of the music video with Christopher Walken dancing up a storm), and occasional songs by Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

From a personal perspective I have to include the original Bill Haley's Comets (the one with the original members from 1955, not the groups that claim to have originals but don't). They continued to perform - and record - through the decade and I had a chance on three occasions to see them perform this decade, most memorably at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena in 2005. They also recorded the winner in the category of "Best Title for a Song Few People Are Ever Likely to Hear Because the Record Was Only Released to a Very Few People", which was: "When I Die, Just Bury Me at Wal-Mart, So My Wife Will Come and Visit Me."

Tomorow, 2002...

^ Days of the Week is hands down the worst STP single of all time, possibly their worst track.

It's still pretty good though.

Good Lord! Embed videos much??

I'm not going to go through all of that. I'll just say the decade begins and ends with Porcupine Tree.

Lightbulb Sun
In Absentia
Deadwing
Fear of a Blank Planet
The Incident

They are like....what if Pink Floyd and Tool had a baby?

If you're interested in them, you can check them out at

http://www.porcupinetree.com/index.cfm

There are lots of clips and videos there.

Holy crap, stop embedding so many videos. You're going to make this page a deathtrap for anyone who doesn't have a powerhouse computer. Links are just fine.

Favourite bands of the last 10 years:

Coldplay
VAST
Snow Patrol
Death Cab for Cutie
Alex Lloyd
Something for Kate
Dizzee Rascal

"Underneath It All" is the only song mentioned in this thread so far that I know and like. My musical taste is in some weird limbo where I don't know 95% of the mainstream music people like OR 95% of the indie music people like. My favourite artists I've discovered in the last decade are Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer, The Unlovables, and Bomb the Music Industry! They don't have music videos (well, Zolof has one), but trust me, they're all awesome. I think the best pop song of the decade is "These Words" by Natasha Bedingfield. I didn't hear it until 2006, but it blew my mind. I'm surprised it apparently wasn't that huge. It sure trumps about 99% of the other pop songs I've heard over the past ten years. A true masterpiece.

One of my favourite new artists of this decade, Duke Special:
