2000 - 2009 in music

Good Lord! Embed videos much??

I'm not going to go through all of that. I'll just say the decade begins and ends with Porcupine Tree.

Lightbulb Sun
In Absentia
Deadwing
Fear of a Blank Planet
The Incident

They are like....what if Pink Floyd and Tool had a baby?

If you're interested in them, you can check them out at

http://www.porcupinetree.com/index.cfm

There are lots of clips and videos there.

1001001, I'm so glad there's another PT champion on this BBS. We need to spread the word! I think they deserve more exposure and popularity than they have.

They are awesome, indeed. But Prog Rock is always a tough sell to the masses. Not a lot of radio stations will play 10 minute songs....

To be perfectly fair, The Incident did begin at #25 on the US album charts, and they've got almost 400,000 listeners on Last.fm, so I don't think they're all that obscure at this point. The fact that they get no radio airplay and extremely little press exposure makes that all the more impressive.

Agreed. They're also very international, the United States not withstanding. This tour has gone everywhere.....

They certainly have got a bit of boost after signing to a bigger label (Roadrunner). I feel they will probably end up like a band like Rush, excellent, and very respected and obsessed over by their fanbase, but totally ignored by the mainstream media. A shame, because I think they deserve the success of, say, Radiohead or Tool. Popular, without compromising their integrity to producing good music.

^ I think I would agree with that. That song just has... everything you could ever possibly want for a song. Even at 12 minutes it still seems to fly by and leave you in an astounded daze every time you play it.

And that breakdown *swoon*

They're not obscure anymore. I don't know how it works in the other countries but here the heavy metal press likes them a lot especially since Deadwings and FOABP. I saw them in 2001 when they were opening for marillion and now they play in a crowded Olympia for prog fans and headbangers

Some of my favorite songs form the decade:

2005

Porcupine Tree – Arriving Somewhere But Not Here

This gets my vote for song of the decade.

Truly spectacular.

:techman:

In 2005, during the Deadwings tour, I decided to buy the album and a ticket (the last one available  ) only one day before the concert . I discovered the song live and I couldn't stop playing it for days after

Have you seen the DVD from that tour? It's called Arriving Somewhere....and it was recorded in Chicago. The version they play that night peels the paint off the walls.

You can (or at least you could previously) download the soundtrack from their website for about $9.00. I listen to that concert in my car all the time.
