2 million fewer viewers

The next show-runner could easily decide to bring any of the characters back, provided the actors are willing.

Actually, since the writers who create the characters own those characters, they need the writers permission as well. For example, a writer might want to bring Captain Jack back, and John Barrowman could even be available, but unless RTD gives his consent it won't happen. Likewise, anyone wanting to use River or the Paternoster Gang will need Moffat's approval.

I thought Moffatt created Captain Jack?

No, although Captain Jack was introduced in a Moffat episode, he was created by RTD.

I believe that characters created by the production staff (so, Rose, Jack, Martha, Donna, Amy, Rory, Clara, the Paternosters) belong to the BBC (since the producer is an employee of the corporation) and don't need any special permissions to use. Characters created by freelancers (River) do need the creator's permission.

In theory, but nowadays staffers are via their own companies. So RtD has some control over Rose and his Doctors while not owning them outright. And so on...

Guess I'll continue doing this.

The Magician's Apprentice 847,000 (653,000)
The Witch's Familiar 734,000 (541,000)
Under the Lake 612,000 (428,000)
Before the Flood 660,000 (511,000)
The Girl Who Died 644,000 (601,000)
The Woman Who Lived tba (493,000)
The Zygon Invasion tba (430,000)

The Woman Who Lived 647,000 (493,000)
...
The Zygon Inversion tba (466,000)

The Zygon Inversion was also back above the four million mark overnight in the UK. I'll be amazed if it doesn't have one of the highest AIs this year when they're announced.

More confirmation on the schedule for next year. Production Designer Michael Pickwoad has said that he starts work for Series 10 in February or March for a May shoot.

I'm seeing only the Christmas Special next year and S10 from January 2017 as being increasingly likely.

You may well be correct. But, is it possible that they could start filming in May and get the post production done on say the first half of the season to air in late 2016? After all, they'd have 6 months from May to say November, seems like they'd have a number of episodes in the can by then.

You could have a Split Season but I don't get the impression that anyone in charge wants that to happen again, plus they would run straight back into the Time Slot problem that has plagued this series and which Moffat, Capaldi (and Gatiss too) have been vocal about recently.

As bad as "No Series in 2016" sounds, it would actually only be a four month delay to a much better time to show it.

^ That's a good point. Hadn't thought about the time slot thing in the UK. A 4 month delay isn't too bad.

The whole thing seems like a mess. I miss the clock work regiment of RTD's era.

There's a book to be written about Moffat's years producing the show and the revolving door of other Producers (anyone remember the one who used overseas shooting as a way to get a free holiday for her and her partner?) but probably not until several people are dead and unable to sue...

Behind the scenes of Steven Moffat's doctor who production

?

Yeah, we could easily end up with a docudrama about the Moffat years like An Adventure in Space and Time as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations. Looking forward to it.

The wait will probably be less frustrating than waiting for the next season...

Okay so a dingbat kidnaps Moffats cat, and says "make the show better or I'll feed one of Fluffy's limbs into my garbage disposal every time I think that you're a half-assing it hack".

Okay, to be honest, I never really expected Osgood to become a companion anyway, so this news doesn't really disappoint me that much. But I would have hoped for a bit more of a logical reason from Moffat than "so people don't have to re-watch earlier episodes."

I think part of the excitement for when a new companion joins the Doctor is that it's a gateway for both new viewers and the companion into the Doctor's world. I never tire of the different reactions of the people who see it. Everything from Clara's "it's smaller on the outside" to Sergeant Benton's incredulous "well that's obvious, isn't it?".

Part of me wishes it went back to this. Easter is a boring holiday but for a few years it was more exciting as it was Doctor Who time. There was also a bit less competition on tv at that time.
